Overview

Your arrival is down a country lane from the town of Nava to the hamlet of Los Campones, travelling through a region infused in eternal green as orchards succeed to pasture, forests and verdant hills cradling old Asturian farmhouses. There are mountain views all around.

The location is in a slim band of the mountainous region that has the Picos de Europa just as close as the natural beaches of the Dinosaur Coast.

The house has been well-finished with a good deal of carpentry work to complement stone walls. The overall impression is of neatness, cleanliness and pleasant decoration. Timber floors upstairs and traditional pinewood ceilings, as well as the owner's attention to small details, assure an atmosphere of coziness and quality.

The main living area downstairs is an especially attractive space. We liked the very comfortable sofa, the solid wooden dining table, the large mirror and wicker armchairs.

A broad wooden balcony running along the upper floor is the perfect place to look out at the mountains and down on the lush, green private garden. A double-bedded room gives onto this gallery, which is a typical feature of traditional Asturias country homes.

Opposite the house, just across the narrow and very quiet lane, are over 400m² of private lawned gardens bordered with colourful bushes, flowers and trees, as well as some ancient chestnuts that create an intimate space, perfect for just sitting and listening to the birdsong, or for barbecued meals. The area has plenty of seating space for meals and a porch for shade in the hotter months. The sloping green lawn provides a large play area for for children.

The cottage is located in a farming community which is justly proud of its fresh Asturias cider: some of the most thirst-quenching you will ever taste. There are also dairy cattle here and we are aware that the aroma of cow manure can reach the house, so be warned: this might put some people off.

Walks start from your very doorstep. Most of them are between one and five hours in length, and include circular routes. Popular hikes go to Nava (40 mins) and up the local peak of Pico de la Mua (1 hr 5 mins).

Your local town of Nava has all you need by way of shops, banks, bakeries and there's a very good place for meals out, or to just have tapas. Nava is also home to the regions's Cider Museum.

This house has an excellent location to explore the very best of natural Asturias: its unspoilt coast line, beautiful fishing villages, elegant seaside towns like Gijon, or treks with breathtaking views around the wild and dramatic Picos de Europa. These are all within easy reach. Of special interest to children wil be the dinosaur footprints along the coast and Jurassic Museum near the pretty fishing town of Lastres.

For days out at the coast, you might like take your pick from our guide to Asturias beaches. Among beaches, you are fortunate enough to have Rodiles as your closest beach and a choice of several excellent strands towards Llanes.

Other attractions are market days in Oviedo, Gijon and Cangas de Onis, cliffs with views at Cabo de Peñas, even better views from the Mirador de Fitu in Sierra del Sueve, the high glacial lakes at Covadonga, and kayaking down the River Sella from Arriondas. There's a handy map at AT13 for finding your way around.

Just when you think there are no more holiday ideas, there's the little FEVE train that everyone enjoys. It's cheap and fun and you have a station 5 mins away at Carancos.

A lovely place"

Beautiful inside and out. Such a relaxing stay. When we arrived on a Monday and asked for a shop the host said they were all closed for a fiesta. We would have coped but she then went home and raided her own store cupboard so we had supplies for breakfast - what generosity - so kind. I would and have recommended Rustical to friends and family and we will be booking again."

Generally: well furnished, cool, quiet, spacious (although five adults might find it a bit of a squash to all sit round in the evening!). It had all the necessary equipment but as there were just two of us, the pans were rather large. We thought it odd there were no wine glasses - I know it's cider country! - but there weren't any decent sized glasses at all. Also, it's a bit impractical that there's no draining board. It might be useful for Brits visiting to have some info on what to do with rubbish - the Spanish are used to the idea that you put it in the bins down the road but we were not sure and asked the neighbour - I'm glad I speak fluent Spanish! It would have been nice to have had a CD player and it could do with a firmer mattress and a fly swatter, otherwise, it was really lovely! the local info you provide is really useful and we were glad to find maps and leaflets on local attractions in the cottage. The owner was really friendly and welcoming and the arragements for meeting her to get the key worked well."
