Overview

In 15 minutes you can be at the seaside or heading into the Picos mountains: an outstanding location.

It makes the holiday cottage ideal for anyone who wants to have the best of both worlds for a holiday in Asturias.

Nicely tucked away towards the countryside end of a very small village, it’s great for days out and great to come home to, with a large garden to sit out in.

There are a few quiet neighbours, so we wouldn’t call the property entirely private, but you don’t feel overlooked here and the locals are very respectful of privacy.

The house’s atmosphere is remarkably agreeable and we liked the natural illumination coming through its many-windowed frontage. Furnishings are of very good calibre and the overall decoration scores high on taste.

The cottage accommodates four people comfortably, although it's popular with couples coming on their own, too.

We found the house maintains very satisfactory standards without trying to be inappropriately plush. You have the warmth of wooden floors underfoot and high ceilings give a sense of plenty of space.

We might have preferred a larger fridge-freezer, but the kitchen is otherwise correctly equipped. There are a few nice touches such as an old marble sink, and nighttime lighting has been thought about, with a reading lamp provided in the lounge.

There's no washing machine but the Spanish owners provide a free clothes washing service: simply arrange a washing day with the caretaker.

This is a genuine holiday home for people who want to enjoy natural Asturias; a nice house with a lovely garden in a very convenient situation. You feel part of the village.

The garden has some 130 m² of flat lawn and it's enclosed, so safe for children. There’s outdoor furniture for meals outside and a small barbecue.

The proximity to the coast means you enjoy a maritime climate here. The garden is more reminiscent of Spain’s semi-tropical south, planted with not only hydrangeas but also bougainvillea, an orange tree and other exotica. One corner of the garden, especially, is an inviting spot to take a book and read.

You will certainly want to spend the larger part of your time here out of doors.

The house itself is in a valley where the Picos begin to rise and you will see the mountains just about everywhere you go.

From the front door there are simple walks, the shortest of which takes you to the village restaurant. This is such a good place to eat out that you might think twice about bothering to cook on this holiday. If all you want is a glass of something, you’ll be welcome to simply make yourselves at home here.

For eating in, all shopping needs are catered for by Unquera 5 minutes away. A baker's van comes to the village daily and a market produce truck once a week.

Quick access to the N-621 coast-mountains road means that in 25 minutes you are in Cabrales, right in the heart of the magnificent Picos de Europa National Park. You can’t go wrong here: the trails are natural treasures.

And 20 minutes in the other direction present you with a choice of Asturias beaches, Franca and Buelna being highly recommended (see photos).

The holiday opportunities are plentiful and we’ll send you ideas and tips before you travel, so that you can start planning days out. They include recommendations for walks, a beach guide and a light railway along the coast.

The cottage is less than an hour's drive from the ferry terminal and airport at Santander.

Sallie Rose | October | 2023

Attractive small house set in lovely and interesting neighborhood, welcoming us with lovely flowers, candles and handmade soaps. The downside is problems with upstairs toilet and sluggish drainage of shower, the need for re-caulking around shower and kitchen sink. The property manager is wonderfully responsive and pleasant. We enjoyed our stay here!"

Loved the location of the cottage. We could hike by the river across the road, or get to the coast or the Picos easily. The house was comfortable and well-equipped for 2 or 4 people, and the restaurant in town was excellent! All-in-all it was a great house and lovely location."

Cottage was very adequate for the two of us; publicity pictures of the garden were very optimistic/idealistic; all stated equipment was present, but very rustic:- I decided not to spend 2 hours of my holiday trying to make the barbecue useable, and perhaps it was unreasonable to expect a small supply of fuel to be present. Nor could I get the "hifi" to work. Wifi also a bit cranky, but useable - just what you would expect for the location. Anyone over 1.65m will really struggle at the cooking/washing-up area. BUT, it was rustic, charming, quiet, peaceful, well-placed for Los Picos, and we enjoyed our week in the cottage. The laundry service was most welcome, and the restaurant 20 steps away was a revelation!"

Rustical Update

In September 2021 we folloed this up and the property owner sent us photos of the sofa. They insist their property is properly clean before guests move in. They also confirm they check the property after the cleaning team finish their job.

This is the second time I book a house with Rustical Travel. I think they are extremely professional and I do plan to continue booking with them. They have very nice houses, and they give very good indications on what to do, taking also care that everythign is perfect for the guest. Regarding AT10, it is located in a great location, near to excellent beaches like La Franca, San Vincente de la Barquera, but also to Picos de Europa. The house is very confortable, with big rooms and very confortable beds, and a very nice garden with a barbecue. Also, great restaurant 20 meters away. The owner gave us also very good indications on what to do, in addition to the ones we received from Rustical Travel. The only concern is regarding the facilities provided by the owner (e.g. they need to replace the kettle) as you miss few ones. In any case, a house in great location, very confortable, with lots of things to do around."

Rustical Update

We have informed the property manager about the kettle needing to be replaced.

Very good location. Easy access to coast and mountains. Nice private garden. Comfortable bedrooms. Kitchen equipment could have been better (e.g old small kettle.) There was a slightly musty smell in the downstairs cupboards and downstairs toilet. However, we did still really enjoy our stay."

Rustical Update

The property manager confirmed that he will check the musty smell downstairs, and replace any kitchen equipment he finds to be old or tired.

House was lovely and the village was a peaceful pleasant place to come home to at the end of each day's travelling around. An excellent base for visiting the Picos and some of the seaside towns. We really enjoyed our 6 days in this cottage in the village of Buelles, pop`n 60. Breakfast outside every morning. We loved the open airy bedroom upstairs with a lot of space. It is very convenient for the beaches and for going to the Picos Europa. It is about an hour`s drive from the ferry at Santander. Having our laundry washed and dried was a great help, and at no charge. Good local restaurant in the village, called Sauceda. We enjoyed a convivial afternoon at the local community centre, with a piper playing the gaita and his friend on the drums. We would recommend this cottage for your holiday. Enid and Allan."

Lovely property. The bedroom we used is a special room. The Large windows lent an exotic feel to the place. The village is quiet but we didn't feel cut off at all. Very near the road and with some friendly, respectful neighbours. The village restaurant was excellent (only open certain times, best to check, although Rustical send you very useful and detailed information). The food and service both very good and only about 20 seconds on foot. They stock good wine too. We visited some beautiful places not too far away, coast and mountains, villages, towns and caves. Driving isn't difficult in Spain, save the driving on the right, and the roads are better than most in England too. Definitely going back!"

We enjoyed a pleasant week in Asturias, and found the cottage cosy and comfortable set in a quiet hamlet. We felt somewhat overlooked at times , and felt we could not make too much noise however with two teenagers this was difficult at times and I think we bemused the locals at times .Sitting out in the garden was very pleasant with a nice barbeque and we managed some peaceful strolls around the village. Overall we found the cottage a convenient base to explore the lovely coastal beaches and interesting villages and countryside. We would recommend visiting Colombes which has an excellent Tourist information base. The Europa de Pico information centre is also worth visiting as its free We enjoyed a morning kayaking on the TIna Ria and saw plenty of wildlife to enthrall such as Kingfishers and vultures. We found the village restaurant was a life line with the Wi Fi however this was restricted to between 2100 and 2300 hours . The restaurant fare was a bit disappointing and did not cater well for vegetarians"

Karen | July | 2016

A very nice property, just as described. The neat, well-maintained garden was appreciated. The two bathrooms and three toilets was a bonus and the kitchen was adequate for cooking simple meals. A proper cafetière would have helped a lot as the one available only made one mug at a time. Flies were a bit of a nuisance, but that's hardly the fault of property owner. The village is a quiet spot with no facilities beyond a very good restaurant just a few strides away, however, you are only just off the main road, so it's quick to get to Unquera or Panes for shopping, cash points etc. There is a station in Unquera which we thought might be useful for day trips, but in reality the service is very limited - we drove to Cabezon del Sal to pick up the train to Santander. Beaches are relatively near to the property, but parking at the most popular ones was a nightmare in the height of the summer. You need to get up early or seek out a more secluded spot. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, our host was helpful without being intrusive, and the washing service was a nice extra. People considering this property need to bear in mind that there in no wi-fi in the house (but there is in the restaurant), and you are right in the heart of the village with neighbours very close by, so if you are looking for isolation, this is not for you."

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at this cottage which was very peaceful but located in easy reach of Unquera for shopping. The house was well equipped and spacious with good bathrooms/showers and plenty of hot water, even heating for a couple of days when the weather was cooler. Although there is no washing machine the lady who came in to clean washed whatever was left out for her and put it to dry on the terrace. Lighting was good , we did not miss TV (Spanish channels only) but enjoyed the CD player. We really enjoyed the garden and deck area and lovely warm evenings . The cottage is well situated for exploration of the coast which at its nearest point at la Franca is about 10 minutes away. Also the Picos mountains are relatively close once the the Hermida Gorge is negotiated. The owner who returns to the village every weekend and speaks little English is most helpful and keen to point out the places of interest ( we managed to get by in French!) Being used to British Ordnance Survey maps we found some maps of the Picos a bit confusing. We would have no hesitation in recommending either the cottage or the area. we were very impressed by the beauty of Northern Spain, its excellent roads, its cleanliness and its friendly people. One small tip. If you lock yourself out (as we did once ) there is another key holder in the village ."

Hi there, house AT10 was perfect. We loved everything about it, beautiful house and garden with all we needed and Jose was very helpful and attentive. The position was idyllic in the lovely village with striking countryside and views and complete peace. Wonderful holiday home and caring hospitality. First my wife is disabled so arriving somewhere new can be a bit of a gamble but the house was just as expected very easy access to the house and decking outside, a downstairs loo and everything very accessible. The kitchen has all that is needed and adjacent to the table and chairs which was fine for us and across from this a lovely spacious lounge with comfortable furniture and big windows to get all the great views all around. Upstairs the main bedroom was a very good size with magnificent floor to ceiling windows. The bed was solid and comfortable and for us the en-suite bathroom was perfect. There is ample storage and overall we were very happy with our accommodation. Outside was a very open decking area with BBQ which we found perfect for relaxing in the sun and evening BBQ's. The village restaurant is a wonderful extra here, we only went once as they were not fully open while we were there. However our one and only visit was really good, the food excellent and mine host was the icing on the cake. All in all we had a wonderful stay and are seriously thinking about coming back next year, not something we normally do as we like to see different places but you never know? Thanks once again and please pass on our thanks to Jose. Nick and Cath."

This was our first time visiting this region of Spain. The cottage was ideally situated between the coast and the mountains for ease of access by car. On the few occasions that it rained, we had plenty of warning as to which direction to head. There is so much more to explore that we are sure we will return to this area. We very much appreciated the incredibly comprehensive information supplied about the cottage and the surrounding area. We very impressed with the attention to detail and its accuracy. Our only [very, very minor] complaint was that we were not aware that all the shops would be closed in Cantabria on our last day [15 September] catching the ferry from Santander. We had intended to take home some delicious meat and cheese. Of all holiday rental companies,we have used in the past, we have found Rustical Travel to be the most straightforward and truthful. The cottage was exactly as described. Thankyou."

We enjoyed our time in the house and were welcomed by Jose on arrival. Having 2 bathrooms was a key feature for us (two couples). I suggest that the house needs a proper kettle. The one provided was tiny (as found in hotel bedrooms) and took too long (but slower) to boil. The house also needs a proper cafetier. The only system provided for making coffee would make perhaps two small cups - we needed 4 large cups! Otherwise the house was reasonably well furnished. We enjoyed the hamlet and ate royally with local dishes at the restaurant (almost) next door. The Picos - as ever- were stunning."

This is a lovely cottage, tasteful and well rennovated. Better than it looks in the pictures. A few improvements could be made to the kitchen tools, crockery and utensils - we ended up buying a sink plug and bowl and barbeque tools because non were provided for example. Also a fly trap or two as they were really swarming everywhere. Otherwise a great place to stay provided you have a car."

the cottage was in a perfect location. Easy to explore the mountains and the beaches. Directions to the cottage were spot on - it must be the first time in 30 years we have driven to a holiday cottage and not got lost and had a argument! Jose was very welcoming and we felt at home straight away. As you recommend the La Sauceda is a lovely restaurant - Ramon is a wonderful host and the food was excellent. We went most nights.
