Overview

Rural tourism in Spain started off as simple lodging on small, family-run farms, where children could run free. Your holiday home here continues in that tradition, but with a standard of accommodation that is second to none.

The house is of very good quality, so spick-and-span it is hard to believe it sits within a working farm of grazing cattle.

The villa is independent and relaxing, the only rental property on the farm, with the owners’ house to the rear.

The overall impression is of rustic modernity. The accommodation is spacious, beautifully finished and well-kept.

The living-and-dining room is especially large and light-filled, with large windows looking out to green fields, where plump black-and-white cows munch peacefully in their healthy pasture (the farm is certified as an organic establishment).

The cottage has a front terrace looking out on to the fields with a barbecue area. Children may be intrigued by two constructions in the gardens that are now under a preservation order. One is the ancient hórreo, a stone grain store on short stilts to keep it dry and to foil hungry mice. The other is a unique octagonal dovecote that has been adopted by a family of barn owls as their home.

Here you are at the geographical centre of Galicia and just half an hour from the region's most celebrated destination of Santiago de Compostela.

You can walk or ride down the famous Camino de Santiago (Way of St James), trod by the pilgrims on the last leg of the way to historic Santiago de Compostela. This emblematic path is just 50 metres from the house. As you go along, you will see chapels, forests, hamlets and a river. Would-be pilgrims can go the whole 35 km to the superb old city of Santiago and the cathedral that is believed to hold the bones of St James the Apostle.

Another curiosity in the area is a living museum of honey, where you can see the entire honey-making process.

The area is ideally suited to those who want to avoid tourist towns and have an experience of real rural Spain. This means field and forest, rivers and outdoor activities – and good food. After all, this is Galicia and there is nowhere better in Spain to eat than here.

To begin with there’s the fresh organic milk on offer. It’s creamy but not heavy, with a hint of sweetness to it. There are local restaurants whose specialities include excellent charcoal-grilled beef and empanadas (pasties: try the delicious vieiras or scallop variety). The dairy cattle naturally mean good cheeses, too.

Five minutes’ walk from your holiday home is a small river, nice for a picnic if not really deep enough for swimming in. For natural swims, drive 5 km to the River Iso, or 15 km to Portodemouros reservoir (see photos).

Trips to the sea mean a full hour in the car, but the location allows you the choice of reaching either the Rias Baixas or the Rias Altas in that time. The Baixas estuaries are dryer and milder, with pretty coves and bays; the Altas more craggy and dramatic with the Atlantic breaking on the rocks.

Explore further south and you can cross the beautiful river border area across into Portugal. Our recommendations for days out and activities come in a holiday guide that we send two weeks before you travel as one of your holiday documents.

Beautiful house, spacious and very tidy. We loved staying here, Pilar and her family were very welcoming and helpful. The pool was fantastic and well kept. So a highly recommended place. Only downside for us was the busy road that you could hear from the property. Despite that, we had a great stay!!"

We enjoyed our holiday very much. Pilar and family were very friendly and helpful. The cottage was spacious and attractive. It was great to have Margarita coming in to clean most days. The only criticism was the lack of oven in the kitchen. For self-catering for a week, no oven is very limiting. It means every meal has to be cooked on just the four rings. We do not want to eat microwaved meals. There was a wonderful, ancient barbecue my husband tackled, not sure many would! We would recommend the property as it was relaxing, comfortable and the family so hospitable. It certainly helped that we speak Spanish! Rustical Travel - Carlos - was very efficient and responded so quickly to emails. Excellent. Thank you."

This is a great spot, with nice views and close to the Pilgrims path. The house is well appointed and the owners are very welcoming, and nothing is too much trouble. Our children really enjoyed the farm. We would recommend this property for exploring Galicia. Kind Regards"

Aisling | August | 2015

Yet again we found it so easy to arrange our holiday through Rustical Travel. It was a lovely rustic cottage , very roomy and comfortable and the travel instructions were spot on again. Unexpectedly , we had a lovely lady who came and cleaned the cottage daily, a lovely surprise! My only negative comments on the cottage were 1) that one of the upstairs ensuite bathrooms leaked . If anyone used the shower water poured through the wall and dripped onto the stairs below. With three other showers this was not really a problem, we just left it unused. 2)there was an unpleasant "drains smell" which came from the downstairs bathroom, was very strong in the downstairs bedroom but also present in the hallway and to a lesser extent in the sitting and dining area. This may have been due to the fact that we had a lot of heavy rain. We tried to hide it as best we could with scented oils etc. As I said the travel instructions to get to the cottage were very detailed and easy to follow as were the instructions for getting into Santiago. However we did miss not getting information about things to do in our very local area ( had been spoiled with lots of information last year). Most of our information seemed to be for someone staying in Santiago. We eventually found a number of lovely walking trails, waterfalls etc very close to Arzuá and our trip to Lugo was probably the highlight of our week. For other visitors a little more local information might be very helpful. Overall I think you offer lovely cottages and make booking holidays so easy, we will certainly be planning to use Rustical Travels for our holidays again next year. :)"

We left very positive comments in the guest book - and we did indeed have a very good time at the property. Pilar was wonderful - she was always cheerful and helpful with suggestions on places to see and routes to take, and it was so good having fresh organic milk delivered to us at request. The property was clean and well-equipped".

Excellent accommodation, nice pool, lovely family. Not all that much locally to see or do. Golf course at the airport has closed. Santiago worth a visit but not easy to navigate."

A really lovely high quality property the photographs do not do it justice. The owners were very friendly and helpful. My only complaint is the track leading up to the farm needs better signage. It is extremely difficult to find in the dark"

Rustical Update

The highways department won't permit a larger sign to the property, so we've improved the directions as much as we can. We have also added new photos (October 2014) which we think they do more justice to the property.

We just wanted to say thank you for our fantastic holiday in Galicia and Asturias. The weather was outstanding, the countryside and coast beautiful and the food delicious, but most of all we would like to say thank you for the houses and in particular the warm welcome we got from Pilar and Marie and her husband. We are so sorry that our lack of Spanish did not allow us to properly say thank you to them personally for all their kind hospitality and welcome, please could you pass this on for us? Many thanks and we hope to come back to Northern Spain"

This is a lovely house, and really suited our needs - nicely furnished, good pool, friendly owners (although you should note that the owner doesn't speak any English at all so a bit of basic Spanish will help). The positives - you can drive to most places within an hour - cities, beaches, mountains etc etc. The downside - you do have to drive most places! However, we loved discovering the region, and we would gladly recommend it."
