Overview

This inviting one-bedroomed cottage is one of those places where you feel immediately at home.

As for the location, the abiding impression is of natural balance in a completely gorgeous setting.

Montseny is, without doubt, one of the most special areas in north-east Spain. It's where hiking is said to have first started in the country, in a mountain range where fragrant pine forests combine with tremendously healthy Mediterranean tree and plant life, and a climate whose mildness reminds you that the sea is only half an hour away.

Blessed with profuse woodlands, it is also rich in aquifers – local Arbuciés is a thriving little town thanks in part to bottling the pure mountain spring water – and the clear, little river running through this property adds special charm to what is a unique scene.

The accommodation is fresh, clean, well-presented, tastefully rustic. Open plan in style, there is plenty of room for a comfortable stay.

Unlike some holiday villas we visit, which have been made sumptuous or packed full of electronic gadgetry to overcompensate for what they lack elsewhere, here everything looks and feels natural and appropriate in tastefully created accommodation. It is, of course, well equipped for a holiday stay or it wouldn't be a Rustical Travel property!

A cheerfully tiled little kitchen has all you need for cooking and there's a wood stove for colder months as well as central heating.

The owner's hobby is lampmaking and the ones you see in the photo over the dining table are fashioned from ostrich eggs: they give a soft, clear light.

A hallway leads to the bedroom, which has a large double bed and curtained window with a private and very pleasant view of the rear gardens. The bathroom is ample and complete..

Set some 200 metres away from the house, the pool area has been created as a fenced-off retreat. Even the stroll from house to pool is a charming experience. The swimming pool may be shared with 2 other independent apartments, which have their own privacy: you may well come across each other, as well as your hosts at the farm, but the accommodation is arranged so that guests in either accommodation enjoy intimacy.

You also share use of a small library with valuable local information, books and maps (which can be purchased, as well as local wine and Ernest's lamps).

This place encapsulates what rural tourism was all about in Spain before less authentic imitations sprang up in competition. When Ernest and Lluisa were running this certified organic farm many years ago, they started to rent a couple of rooms in the farmhouse to boost the family economy, which was then based entirely on sheep farming. They discovered a rare talent for making people feel welcome and their bed-and-breakfast weekends soon become so popular that they decided to build instead three independent pretty apartments instead: this, a two-bedroomed apartment CA12(2), and another cottage 2 minutes walk away: CA45. They subsequently reduced the sheep rearing to a minimum in order to dedicate time and care to rural tourism and their guests.

Nowadays, they strike a happy balance, which includes making available to guests well-priced priced lamb and other products from the land, aware that wholesome fare on the table is part of any genuine rural experience of Catalonia. The farm is completely chemical-free and the locality is well known for its abundance of wonderful mineral water sources. Waste is carefully handled so that the water sources remain pure and uncontaminated.

This cottage is set apart from the other apartment in its own quiet, private space, and facing away, so you feel very private.

You can sit outside in in the shade of a porch terrace or cherry tree, or in the sun, looking out on the very pretty, relaxing natural scene. You have a small brick-built barbecue and two sunbeds, plus a hedged-off corner just for you.

There aren't many places we'd describe as idyllic, but this has to be one of them. The pictures here really tell the story. It's such a lovely place to be, crossing the bridge over the energetic little river to explore the woodlands and fields.

Returning holidaymakers cite a sense of feeling at home as a main reason for coming back here: small families or couples, they all report having had special holidays here. Over the years, the accommodation and the owners have built up a deservedly good reputation, which has a good deal to do with a desire to make people from different countries feel looked after here.

Theirs is a small up-and-running organic farm with fruit trees, market gardens and sheep, and yet it enjoys an enviable tranquility as a result of being secluded from other properties and roads, being accessed by a 1.2 km track (with some bumps). The equilibrium between farming activity and rural tourism is intelligently thought out. Sheep have their own grazing, while elsewhere is richly planted with flowers, shrubs, climbing plants and all manner of fruit trees, all nicely spaced and spread out around the land.

There's so much to do in the area that it would fill a book to describe all the options, but here's a foretaste.

Walking and rambling: these have almost endless attractive possibilities. The outstanding beauty of the heights in Montseny Natural Park make it an absolute must for anyone not addicted to lounging with a book all week. It has superb trails, forests and mountain views. You can make out one of the Montseny peaks in the photos.

Horse riding is also available at very good stables.

Among castles in the region is one in the local vicinity which is being restored and can be visited despite being a work-in-progress.

Sea, sun and healing waters? No problem. Costa Brava and its excellent beaches are 35 km away, and the spa of Santa Coloma de Farners just 20 km.

For people-watching we thoroughly recommend traditional street markets such as the lively one held every ´Tuesday and Saturday in Vic (and Sundays but only fresh food).

Food and drink? Local Arbucies has five restaurants: three are classic Spanish affairs and two are signature restaurants. Dining out here is a real treat: Girona has nothing to envy the rest of Spain when it comes to gastronomy.

Girona town is just half an hour away.

Happy holidays!

The property was very relaxing, beautiful and a lovely stay. The owner and his wife were very kind and helpful. We loved the two farm dogs who would relax near us and the sheep and horses which would stroll past in the afternoon.. Great cabin and outdoor area. Overall a beautiful property"

Rachel | October | 2018

We had a lovely week in the cottage, which is spotlessly clean, extremely comfortable and really cosy, with lots of unique touches. Lluisa and Ernest are the perfect hosts and were always on hand if we needed anything, in a really unobtrusive way. We loved the rural location tucked deep in the valley, although the access track was a little challenging in parts due to the very heavy rain! This is a truly special and incredibly relaxing location for a holiday, and we’d love to return when the sun is shining!"

David | June | 2017

This place was simply stunning. So green and peaceful, a wonderful place for relaxation. The hosts were absolutely lovely, very friendly but also giving us our privacy. The accommodation itself was very comfortable, spacious and charmingly rustic. There was everything you needed for a holiday including good cooking facilities. Whilst there are two other holiday properties at the location, they are situated in such a way as to allow privacy and we hardly ever saw other guests. The pool was a delight with beautiful views of nearby mountains. We really enjoyed the animals on the farm in particular the two charming friendly dogs. The place is situated a short drive from Arbucies where there is a good supermarket and an array of great food shops. A great place for relaxation, nature lovers and foodies!"

Our holiday was everything we'd hoped for. The setting is idilic, a true tranquil little hide away. Laying by the pool you felt you could be the only people for miles around. The property is beautifully presented and spotlessly clean. Lluisa was the perfect host. We arrived quite late so she brought us some bread, bananas, home grown tomatoes and a bottle of beer each so we could have a snack. She provided us with fantastic local knowledge of places to visit and walks. We really liked being surrounded by the working farm, the sheep, the 20 year old horse, the chickens and the two dogs who were just the most laid back gentle dogs we've ever met. It was all so peaceful, just the sound of the little river running through and the occasional 'baa' from a sheep, and all very green, lots of trees and plants. The property is well placed for visiting many of the local attractions (including Barcelona) and lots of walks. Local walking guides are rarely written in english but paths are well sign posted so it's fairly easy to follow. Worth noting that while we were there most of the local restaurants were shut as the owners were on holiday. This didn't matter to us as we were happy to stay in our lovely accommodation and relax, but worth letting future people know I think. The local supermarket is fantastic and the local town has great food produce, so eating in is easy. For us it was a 10/10, we loved it. Thank you."

Monica | September | 2015

This is one of the most beautiful, scenic places we ever visited. Combined with a very relaxed atmosphere and the most great weather you could not ask for a better holiday. The cottage had everything you might require, including a washing machine for a longer stay. The hosts sold us some delicious organic lamb which we BBQ'd just outside the cottage. You don't need to leave the area if you like walking and there is 'grand trial' that takes you to Arbucies the local town. There you can buy lots of fresh and very good produce, local vegetables and meat. The Catalan know how to eat well and the local restaurants reflect that quite clearly. All of this is located approximately 30 minutes from Girona airport and about an 1 hour from Barcelona Airport. If you want to travel around there is a lot to see if you do want to see the beach or visit Barcelona though we didn't bother... What really made the trip enjoyable were the wonderful hosts Ernest and Lluisa who were beyond kind to us. We enjoyed their company very much and look forward to making a return trip as soon as possible."

CA12(1), one-bedroom property, is a wonderful place to stay. It has an olde worlde charm that makes for a very relaxing holiday. The property had everything we could wish for to make our stay comfortable. Although adjoining the owners' house we felt like we had the place to ourselves. They are most welcoming hosts. They're genuinely friendly and nothing is too much trouble. They had brilliant advise for things to do and places to visit in the area, giving us maps and guidebooks for a wide variety of nearby attractions. We had a fantastic holiday which was made special by the lovely atmosphere of the accommodation, the beautiful surroundings and the friendliness of our hosts, Ernest and Lluisa. We definitely recommend this place if you want a relaxing break away from all the hustle and bustle."

What a fabulous place! If you are looking for a relaxing break then look no further. The cottage was lovely and really well equipped. Can't fault anything at all. We were lucky with the weather and had wall to wall sunshine, with the added bonus of the swimming pool to cool down. Couldn't have asked for a warmer welcome, nothing was too much trouble. Lots of information provided about local places of interest. We didn't eat out much so made regular visits to the local, very well stocked, supermarket and made full use of the barbeque. If you need to keep in touch with the outside world there is free WiFi connection. We sat on the patio, drinking wine, barbequeing steaks and listening to The Archers on my tablet - just how chilled can you get! Can't recommend the property highly enough, its perfect."
