Overview

For us, this grand and very charming house sums up all that's best about rustic living.

Here you will enjoy a holiday in great comfort in one of Andalusia's most impressive mountain destinations. We also think it offers exceptional value in its prices whether there are 18 of you or just 4 people coming, and all price combinations give you private and exclusive use of the property.

You have excellence and style in accommodation, a well-preserved historic village, location in the heart of a Natural Park offering marvellous walking and exploring, and Ronda only half an hour away.

It's a real pleasure to be able to offer a house of this quality in a village as delightful as Grazalema. It's in a quiet spot on the village's edge, from where a two-minute walk through a flower-bedecked street of stately houses brings you to the old square with its restaurants and tapas bars.

The property is a real treat: warm, welcoming and very spacious. It has privacy (total), gardens (colourful and well-tended) on different levels, a splendid swimming pool (plenty large enough for proper swims) and the satisfying style of tradition in every nook and cranny.

This is also the sort of holiday villa that keeps updating itself, introducing improvements to facilities, and basically adding value to your stay here. The recent fitting of electric blinds in three of the rooms, or the works carried out to improve the showers and make them more spacious, is a good case in point.

The main entrance is through a 150-year old door to a dignified reception hall, hung with tasteful paintings.

Before we mount the staircase to the bedrooms, let's go round the common areas.

A sumptuosly furnished and luminous wood-ceilinged living room gives very ample space (a huge 75 m²) in which to spread out and relax in different reading and sitting areas. Three sofas and four armchairs are ranged round in country house style. Most of the wall is occupied by a huge window looking onto the terrace.

The dining area is on a slightly raised level. Decoration includes antiques, door lintels are handcarved and there's a fresh smell of wood polish. A glass-fronted fireplace adds to the cozy feel of the place

Alongside is a more informal breakfast or dining room. It has floor-to-ceiling glass windows and access to a fabulous terrace.

The terrace is part-shaded, part in sun and furnished for meals or just relaxing. It overlooks the swimming pool below, gardens with a large palm tree, and the views are prettiness itself: the sunlit valley and tree-hung limestone sierra. It's tremendously rugged mountain scenery.

Access to and from the kitchen, which is top-class, is convenient for all the dining areas.

There are nine bedrooms, 6 upstairs and the other three on a lower level accessed from a terrace. Thanks to the altitude, Grazalema is not usually too hot, but bedrooms do have air conditioning if required. Floors are of smooth terracotta tiling and the bedlinen is of smooth cotton.

One room (Mejorana) is separate from the rest and accessed via a spiral staircase (unsuitable for toddlers):

Outdoors, steps go down through terraces gardens to the swimming pool area and a tree-shaded garden with hammock. There are all kinds of flowering plant, both familiar and exotic, mature shrubs and trees, and a lawned area, too.

The swimming pool is generously sized and has an outdoor shower and WC. There are plenty of sunloungers and the pool area is not overlooked. Nearby is your barbecue area.

There is a second entrance to the gardens directly from the street below, where you can also park safely by and free of charge by the rural Guardia Civil (police) station.

The village of Grazalema is one of our personal favourites, a real classic amongst the pueblos blancos (white villages) of Cadiz. It is situated out on its own in the Natural Reserve of the same name, where the rambling is simply compelling.

There are plenty of walks and we will send you a sample of the best of the self-guided walks as part of your holiday information.  The limestone landscape is craggy and alluring, often to be found is the rare pinsapo fir which can grow to 30 metres high.

There are caves to explore, too. Cueva del Gato (the Cat’s Cave) is a particularly fascinating introduction to the subterranean world of rivers and lakes (best explored with a guide).

You can also go horseriding, canyoning or simply picnic on the grassy banks of a lagoon 15 minutes from the villa.

The beauty of summer in Grazalema is that its elevated location in the Sierra means it is generally spared the oppressive heat of lower-lying Andalusian areas and cities. It makes nights much more comfortable. You can visit Ronda just half an hour away, or Sevilla, by day and return afterwards to the relief of the milder atmosphere of the natural parkland.

Your hosts live locally and are on hand to ensure that everything is to your satisfaction.

I can’t speak highly enough of the house. We were a group of 10 - 6 adults and 4 kids. All the bedrooms are en-suite and the beds are really comfortable (quality mattresses and pillows). The pictures don’t do it justice. Andres, the host, is so friendly. He could t do enough for you. The house is perfectly located in the village - just a few mins stroll to the various bars and supermarkets. The pool is amazing and Andres pops around every so often to clean it (he lets you know first). It was a bit hot when we were there so we didn’t attempt any of the walks but we did some day trips to the other mountain villages (all amazing!). It was such a relaxing holiday. I highly recommend the house and location and would love to return."

Once again we had a wonderful week in this spacious, comfortable and beautiful house. Their is plenty of room for everyone and we particularly like that all rooms are en suite. The terraces and pool area are magnificent. The only thing that we would like is for the kitchen to be better equipped and for there to be a dining table big enough for all 11 of us to eat together comfortably outside. We put a couple of tables together but the pergola doesn't cover it all. As we ate out most evenings this was only really a oroblem at lunch. Shade on the main terrace is also an issue in the morning."

Such a great house! We were a mixed-age group - grandparents, parents and teenagers and the house had everything we needed for the perfect holiday. We loved that all the rooms were en-suite, wonderful comfortable beds and everywhere was spotlessly clean. Grazalema village is so lovely - loads of choice of bars and restaurants and great hikes nearby. The pool is large and we had a lot of fun playing water games with the floating ring and ball we brought with us. The owner met us on the first day to show us around and he was very friendly and helpful."

We enjoyed our stay at La Mejorana in Grazalema very much! The villa, the swimming pool and the village of Grazalema were a wonderful setting to enjoy the summer holidays together with our friends. Señor Andrés is an extremely gracious host and we are thankful to him for welcoming us so warmly and providing us with excellent information about the village and the beautiful surrounding area."

This was our second time at this wonderful house in a delightful village. Very luxurious to have ensuites in all rooms and air-conditioning (although some of us round we didn't need it in all rooms, which were lovely and cool). Beautiful terraces and views. Thanks to Andres who is an incredibly welcoming host."

The house is beautiful and super comfortable. The village is lovely, with a good choice of bars and restaurants. The pool area was well-maintained and Andres was very helpful during our stay. Although there were plenty of glasses and crockery, it would have been good to have more cooking equipment, and also a table outside large enough for 12 people to sit around and eat together (due to covid restrictions half of our party were unable to come so it was fine for us, but we are comnig back next year with 11 people...)"

We stayed at this delightful Villa in the uniquely charming village of Grazalema in July and would return like a shot. Andres the host was so welcoming and helpful. The villa itself is spacious but cosy and full of character and the pool and terraces a perfect retreat. It was peace itself to sit on the spacious terrace or float in the clear pool and watch the majestic Griffon Vultures soar over head. The village is full of local interest and there are copious places to eat well and drink. The dramatic backdrop of the mountainous national park made it a truly magical setting."

We loved this villa and would love to return one day. The layout worked really well for our group of 4 couples and two children. The house was immaculately clean and very comfortable. We especially enjoyed the location in a fantastic village with shops and restaurants in walking distance. The pool was great and there was enough shade for reading. The photos give a very accurate idea of what to expect. The village was more charming than we expected."

Charming location. House well positioned with wonderful views. Great local town with very few tourists - so authentic and price appropriate. Hosts were very helpful and driven to make our stay positive - with lots of good info and suggestions. You don’t need a hire car - unless you want to tour. But you can hike/run from the property and use buses and taxis (very reasonable costs)."

Angela | June | 2018

We spent a week at this property at the beginning of July, as a family of 7 adults, celebrating my birthday. It is well situated in a pretty town in the National Park. It is was even better than we expected from the description and had everything we needed. Everything in the house was spotless. The house and gardens are beautiful with fabulous views from the patios and balconies. The pool was lovely and cleaned regularly. It was amazing to float in the pool and watch the vultures and eagles flying overhead! Andres was very welcoming and helpful. He gave us lots of information on walks, trips and where to eat. The scenery on the walks was spectacular but take note that not all 'easy' walks would be easy for all ages. The town has plenty of places to eat and drink, although that week seemed to be their holiday period and so some were closed but we could still eat in a different place each day. There are three good supermarkets nearby and shops selling local produce. We hired a minibus from Malaga airport and the journey was straightforward. We did a couple of trips out to nearby towns, Jerez and the Pileta caves, alternating with exploring Grazalema and spending time at the pool. All In all, we had a marvellous time and are already looking forward to a repeat holiday."

Unbelievably beautiful villa and town. We hiked, we went horseback riding, we grilled amazing Iberico pork from the carnecería, we swam, we drank wine, we ate the award-winning Payoyo cheeses of Grazalema, we fell asleep to the smells of the beautiful jasmine. The real gem of the place is Andrés, who was incredibly kind and helpful in every way."

This villa is simply fantastic! Great location in the village centre meant we had easy access to go for breakfast, lunch and dinner! There is a lot of space in this villa and we were a group of 9 so we all had plenty of our own space. The bedrooms are excellent all being en-suite and with air-con. As other reviewers have said, a bigger BBQ for easier cooking for 9 people would be good and the cutlery is also fairly flimsy. Those are minor things though and this really is a fantastic place. Yet again Rustical Travel have been amazing in handling the booking and details."

We were a group of 10 that rented this property for a week in September. The arrangements to meet at the property were well handled and our request to gain access a little earlier was a great help with some people having traveled a long way on that day. All the bedrooms were of an excellent standard, roomy, light, good bathrooms and a/c. There was plenty of recreation areas and for us the outside terrace area was a focus. By joining two of the tables we could all sit to enjoy meals and drinks together. The large umbrella provided shade most of the day. The kitchen was adaquet for our requirements, we only had lunches and drinks at the villa and made use of the many cafes and restaurants in the village for the evening meals. There was an excellent range and you could go to a different restaurant every night. We only had one disappointing meal and that was at a more expensive establishment, pity as was a birthday celebration. There were plenty of shops to buy provisions for all our needs. The area provided different activities for all tastes and our group went their different ways each day, or explored the town which has a full of surprises and for a small village was a delight to explore over the week. A trip to Ronda, walk in the National Park, a trip to the many other villages in the district and a trip to Jerez to see the Andulacian horses were some of the activities untaken by our group. the swimming pool was also an excellent facility and maintained to the highest standard. We would highly recommend this property, the local contact who showed us the property were extremely helpful and obliging at all times and available for any querys. We did not use one of the bedrooms but a group of 12 would be very comfortable accommodated in this villa."

We had a fantastic time. The vila was amazing: spacious and well decorated. All the rooms are of a good size and have excellent ensuites. Location is perfect; one bar is only 30 meters away! The center is 5 mins away too, so plenty of choice. Pool area was lovely and the owner popped in to keep it clean. It would be even better if the BBQ was a bit bigger - it took ages to cook for 10. Also a basic kit of salt, pepper, oil would be handy. We realised we didn't have any salt but the bar next door let me take one of their salt cellars! We had a thoroughly good time and the owners were delightful."

We had a wonderful time at the villa and loved Grazelema. The village was beautiful and we are and drank very well there. The villa was perfectly located near children's park, restaurants, bars and shops and only a very short walk to the town square. The decor inside was lovely and the views spectacular. The air con in every bedroom was especially good, plus plenty of crockery and cutlery, bed linen and sun beds. Overall, the perfect family holiday spot!"

Excellent in all respects. Very nice and friendly hosts - who were quick to answer any queries. They provided a lot of local information on the villages, as well as on local hiking. Extremely comfortable and well organized house. The pool and balcony were highlights. Ideal for family group of 9 including 3 teenage girls. Liked being able to walk from the house into Grazalema village - and directly onto the hiking trails - did at least one hike a day. Also did two day trips to Rhonda which is an easy half hour drive away. Fantastic area. Thanks very much."
