Overview

After winding down some 800 metres from the Gaucin road, the private estate’s electric gates open to a driveway for parking.

Wooden doors then open to a courtyard planted with young palms before you enter the villa proper.

We made two inspection visits here and came away very favourably impressed. One of the things we like about Villa RD75 is the interest and commitment by the owner to maintaining and improving the property that he originally made with his own family in mind. They still come up from the coast to stay on quiet weekends.

It’s suitable for a party of just adults, or families with children to keep happy, with lots of plus points and different spaces: the villa itself, the views, swimming pool, pool kitchen, pool lounge and games room.

We’re tempted to start with the swimming pool because it’s such a beauty, nicely rounded with curves, and steps leading down into the water.

You can see in the photos the gorgeous setting in the hilly woodland.

At one end of the pool, a roofed summer lounge is a wonderful place to survey the entire pool terrace. The view extends past the Games Room (we’ll come to this) all the way down the valley.

It’s all perfectly private and not overlooked.

What’s even more interesting is the poolside kitchen-bar, also shaded, and fully equipped for outdoor cooking.

The main villa building is mostly ground floor. A high-ceilinged living room opens onto a shaded verandah that runs along the length of the villa, giving you sitting and dining options both inside and out.

The verandah is fenced for child safety if you don’t want to let little ones into the pool area. The garden is also fenced round.

There’s a smart, fully equipped indoor kitchen and an indoor dining room for six people.

There are three bedrooms.

Careful scrutiny of the photos tells you that there are two more buildings.

The little house above the pool is extra sleeping accommodation which we have decided to keep closed for your convenience and not offer, as we feel the living and dining spaces are ample for six people but no more.

The detached building you see beneath the pool is the Games Room. Expect any youngsters with you to claim this space as their own. Maybe the kids will emerge now and then for barbecues and a dip in the pool. Maybe.

All in all, it’s a very complete villa and we were impressed. It’s well cared for, too.  A local gardener caretakes the house and ensures that everything is well tended.

The Gaucin location makes it doubly attractive. The village is 5 mins drive, sandy beaches are 30 mins, and Ronda is an interesting 45-minute drive through the mountains.

YOUR REVIEWS

Jonathan | August | 2023

The house, other buildings and outside were excellent and we very much enjoyed our stay. We have some suggestions which would have made life easier and better: 1. Two remotes for the gate. Most people staying will have two cars. If one car goes out, taking the remote with them, the other car cannot get out. 2. Better coffee making facilities. We could not find pods for the Cremissima coffee machine anywhere. Neither were there any Tassimo pods in Gaucin (despite what we were told) and had to go to Estepona for them. Suggest they provide a large Bialetti or similar which would take standard ground coffee. In any event, guests should be told in advance what they need to buy (we asked, but Esther did not tell us). 3. Terrible smell of drains in downstairs bathroom in main house. Bathroom was unusable. 4. Instructions on how to use Sonos sound system would have been helpful - or perhaps we were not meant to use it? 5. No ice making facilities (trays etc). Tell people in advance if they need to purchase ice."

Another lovely stay with Rustical. The villa was just as spectacular as we remembered. Such a lovely property. And when we had a few days of bad weather the hosts were very kind and delivered some extra bedding / heaters etc to make us feel more comfortable. Such a beautiful part of Spain. Luis was extremely helpful and went above and beyond to ensure we had a great stay."

Back for second time at RD75 - still really nice; great to see a full size pool table (practiced getting my pool skills up to speed). Swimming pool still makes the property, together with great views to Gibraltar and Africa as well as the wide set of places to sit outside for meals. We missed the sheep wandering by this year. The pool and games room kept the boys busy, and still hardly any mozzies around to annoy us when outside. All in all super good, had a great time!"

Edward | August | 2020

Great property. Appreciated very much the large swimming pool. The boys liked the deep end and diving in. Marvellous views across towards Gibraltar in the distance and Africa on clear days. Perhaps we were lucky but we experienced no mozzies whilst outside. Loved the evening sheep trail winding across the land above the villa with the herd scrunching across every day. Quiet and peaceful. Lots of outside sitting space - we were only four so we had huge choice as to where to have meals and appero. Games room was a nice-to-have and the boys liked the pool table and DVD pplayer for when tired from the swimming pool. Good support and welcome, and daily pool cleaning/check."

There is no doubt that this property is designed for outdoor living. This is, without doubt, a rustic, very spacious villa with large pool and beautiful views. Unfortunately once you look closer there are problems which you don't expect. The patio outside seating has completely collapsed under the cushions, making them quite uncomfortable. There is no holder for the shower head upstairs, no idea why that is?! The sink in the kitchen had no plug. The ensuite bathroom in the downstairs bedroom smelled so bad that the window had to be left open at ALL times. Half the sockets in the bedroom also didn't work. The main reason I chose this particular villa was because of the games room as we travelled with 3 teenagers. However, the pool table has completely gone. It is so uneven and totally unplayable. I know the owner said it was fine in response to a previous review - it isn't! The dart board is electronic - how cool! Unfortunately there are no darts with ends which will actually stick in the board so that is also unusable. So there is not really a games room at all. Despite all said, we had a wonderful time as weather was good and we were outside at all times. Shame we couldn't use the bbq, nor the pizza oven ..... Do visit la Sierra de la Zahara for kayaking and Ronda for gifts and gorgeous scenery. Villa set in a beautiful location; such a shame, could be an amazing villa if half a week's rent was spent on it, then would be 5 stars instead of 2!"

Rustical Update

On September 2019 the property manager informed us that the damaged terrace seating has been replaced. There is a plug in the kitchen sink that is often stored on a tray located in the cupboard under the sink. We have also been made aware that the sockets that didn't work have now been fixed.
The manager also confirmed us that a new set of darts are already provided.

On November 2019, the manager confirmed that the pool table has been replaced, and there is now a new one at the property.
Regarding the seawage smell in one bathroom downstairs, the manager told us that this may have been a one-time thing (probably due to a draft), as there have been plumbers checking the plumbing and confirmed that it works fine and has no problems.

As the charcoal barbecue is usually forbidden in dry months, we are informed that a gas powered barbecue will be provided at this property for 2020 bookings.

Good service from Rustical and very nice Villa. All very positive, but the things to improve are: Games room equipment is getting a bit ropey, games tables are wonky, etc. A better curtain in the top bedroom would stop the light coming through in the morning, and cut out the light from the garden lamps in the evening (which are on a timer and seem to stay on until 02:00am)"

Rustical Update

The property manager informed us that they have plans to change the curtain in the top bedroom for one that blocks better the light. Also, the garden lamps can be re-programmed to turn off at an earlier time if this is requested to the caretaker. Lastly, the property manager said that the equipment in th Games Room is only a bit worn due to normal use but in good condition, but they would replace them if they become too tired or if they break.

We absolutely loved this property and will certainly return. It is extremely well cared for, clean, and perfect for a family holiday. The only thing to consider is that if your child gets car-sick, day trips will be difficult as the roads are very windy. That was fine with us because we were more than happy to stay at the villa - we had a gorgeous week! The outdoor kitchen is fabulous."
