Overview

If it’s a cheerful holiday in southern Spain you’re after – and you do insist on a properly equipped and cared-for self catering villa, but plush, expensive details are really not that important – this very nicely located villa might well be of interest.

Colourful and practical, without pretences to luxury, we think the property has 5 significant factors in its favour. We also think it’s best for 5 people at most, but we’ll come to that.

The location. Gaucin village, ever popular for its mountain location close to the Mediterranean Sea, is just a 10-minute walk. There’s a typical Spanish café-bar/restaurant with good tapas at the end of the stroll. If you prefer to drive, the free village car park is right next to the bar. There are also good walks from the front door along a rural path, under the rocky crag on which Gaucin's "Eagle Castle" sits.

The view. It’s of hillside covered with Mediterranean forest and the mountains of Sierra Bermeja. Behind them is the sea.

The pool. It’s a handsome 8 metres by 4 metres and it has underwater illumination for night swims.

The privacy. You have no neighbours next to you and the nearest house is so far distant as to make the pool patio as good as not overlooked.

The accommodation occupies the entire upper floor of the house, downstairs being simply closed storage space.

An open-plan main room is divided into sitting and dining areas and a duly equipped kitchen that includes a dishwasher.

The living room balcony is a special spot, giving you a wonderful view of the green hills and mountains between Gaucin and the coast.

The three bedrooms are simple, neat and, well, brightly painted.

They each have wardrobe space.

Note that the double bed in Bedroom 3 is positioned against the wall, which is not ideal for one of you to get in and out without disturbing their sleeping partner. Also, in the living room, there are comfortable sofas to seat 5 people only: we’d say “capacity is six at a push”.

There are two places to eat outdoors: a sunny upper terrace just outside, with excellent views, and a shaded porch below, among plants and by the pool.

The pool’s an obvious highlight and plenty long enough for proper swims at 8 metres. It’s not gated, if you have small children, but patio is fenced, the stairway up to the accommodation can be gated at the top, and the pool has steps leading into the water.

Privacy is guaranteed here. You and the nearest other house are distanced so you can hardly see each other.

Parking for more than one car is directly outside in your own driveway. Your “modest, private villa” turns out to be quite an attractive proposition in the end…

Gaucin is one of Andalucia’s favourite village holiday destinations, allowing you to combine rural Spain with sandy beaches down at the coast less than 40 minutes away. Malaga and Gibraltar airports are an easy drive, too.

Lucy | August | 2016

The house was lovely, it really exceeded our expectations. The setting is beautiful, down a track and with no near neighbours it really is a lovely peaceful setting. It was a short walk to the village which have everything you need - some really lovely restaurants and a good supermarket, you don't need to go anywhere else really. The house was lovely and clean with fresh laundry in the week and the pool was lovely. I liked that you could sit on the little balcony near the sitting room in the morning and watch the sunrise - or the larger balcony on the other side of the house - the breeze made the heat a little more bearable. We spent a lot of time around the pool and the children loved it - there was a DVD player where they watched films when it was too hot. We went to Estepona which worth a visit - not as touristy or built up as Marbella and the coast further down but lovely clean beach with good restaurants nearby. We also visited Tarifa and the coast that side but it was so windy when we went that we were unable to swim. There was lovely swimming in the river on the mountain road - cold water full of fish but stunning scenery. Also recommend going riding in the mountains to really see the stunning scenery around. I would highly recommend both the house and the area."

We had a fantastic week and everything was great. My only comment on how our week could have been any better was if each bedroom had a fan. Most days it was 38-40C and very warm in the bedrooms - it would have been great if the kids could have had a fan each (one was provided by the property)"

Rustical Update

We have talked to the property manager and requested one fan for each bedroom for next year.

Villa description says for 6 people - we would say couple with children or two couples - there is only one bathroom When we visited - July 2016 - there were only two sun loungers of which one was broken. Other chairs available for sitting round table on upper balcony. Restricted use of sunbathing round pool area. Updated photos of villa - there have been some changes both inside and out although nothing to be worried about, e.g. room next to pool has now got walls and windows and big table, chairs and fridge as well as comfy settee. The "walk" from the village - needs to be described as unmade and uneven. Steep parts on way up to village. Torch is recommended in the evenings - return journey. Otherwise a well presented villa with pool, peaceful location, Gaucin has plenty bars and restaurants - recommended would be: El Atico - highly recommended booking essential La Fructuosa - recommended booking essential El Portesuelo Bar - at top of village welcome sight after walk up from villa Caf Bar El Puente - highly recommended, terrace at back with lovely views bar paco pepe - recommended overlooking fountain in square El Hacho - opposite petrol station recommended lovely terrace at back overlooking swimming pool and views Train Station - we would recommend going to Cortes de la Frontera as much easier road to drive as opposite to El Colmenar"

Rustical Update

We now offer this villa for up to 5 guests, and have added a mention to the track being somewhat uneven. We have also requested more sunloungers for 2017.

Jo | June | 2016

We had a wonderful holiday in this lovely, bright, clean, comfortable villa! We did arrive a little earlier than expected and because our airport transfer coach couldn't make the last part of the journey up to the villa (dirt track) we rang the key holder who kindly met us at the petrol station in the village, her partner took us to the villa as there wasn't a taxi available. The villa is very clean, bright and comfortable, although the two other adults in our party found the two single beds a little uncomfortable (to be fair they were probably intended for children) The bedding and towels were changed once a week. We did feel disappointed with the welcome pack, (a very basic white loaf, bottle of white wine, small bottle of water, 5 eggs, carton of juice, fruit from the garden and a very, very small sliver of cheese, barely enough for one person! we had to make the journey back to the village on foot to get more food for the evening and breakfast. We wish we'd ordered more food ahead of our arrival (milk, enough cheese for at least 4 people, chunky bread and butter maybe) The shower head in the bathroom needs attention, it's very loose and doesn't stay in position when the pressure in the water changes, it shoots up into the air sending water all over the bathroom and soaks everything in sight! A good idea would be to position a mirror in each of the bedrooms close to an electrical socket as it was a bit of a pain waiting to use the only one available in the bathroom. The pool is excellent, very well looked after by Pepe (the owner) and very clean. The gardens which Pepe is quite rightly very proud of, are wonderful, oranges, avocados, lemons, almonds, sweet chestnuts and olives, not to mention the glorious array of colourful flowers in pots all around! It is possible to walk into the village from the villa (we are 4 very fit healthy adults) but it's a hard walk, uphill all way there and downhill all the way back but in the temperatures we had when we stayed it was quite an uncomfortable walk so we would certainly recommend hiring a car. There aren't many shops in the village, a couple of small (adequate) supermarkets , a pharmacy, wine house and deli, a very useful little tiny bazar that sold everything from shoes to kitchen utensils! and an antique and arts type shop. Lots of great tapas bars/restaurants selling very good food and drink at reasonable cost, the service in almost all was very good. The village is very lovely and very hilly (it is up in the mountains so we expected that!) the views from the villa and village are amazing! There are eagles soaring overhead most days! We went to Gaucin with 14 other adult family members in three different villas, our villa was by far the best of the three....and not the most expensive! Highly recommend it!! Thank you also to Rustical travel, the service we received from you was second to none! All of our enquiries were answered in detail and very quickly, we got lots of helpful information about the area ahead of our trip and the whole booking experience was trouble free! We wouldn't hesitate to use rustical again."

Susan | July | 2015

This house is in an idyllic location with fabulous views. It's great that you can walk into the village where there are many bars and eateries. The pool is delightful and essential when it's 38 degrees. We had a great holiday. Some of the appliances didn't work (remote controls, despite us buying new batteries, lose connection on washing machine and the supply of glasses/plates could do with updating/supplementing). But this would be so easy to solve. It didn't spoil our holiday in any way, we had a great time and we would recommend the villa."

Rustical Update

Appliances, kitchenware etc. should now all be in good order.

from first enquiry on villa , rustical travel have been very helpful with any communication. On arrival we were greeted and guided to our villa and then shown around, Villa was in great location , made more stunning when Gaucin castle above the villa was illuminated in the evening. Villa was secluded although very close to village and shops and it had everything we needed for a relaxing holiday. Excellent villa , and excellent service - thankyou."
