Overview

Here’s a very enjoyable house with three en suite bedrooms, restored and refurbished in 2013 by a Spanish architect with a taste for the antique in style. He was equally aware that facilities have to be modern, and that's what you'll find here.

It’s conveniently central in Gaucin, making it a good choice for those who like to have shops and restaurants close by, although thanks to the way the Gaucin is built on the hillside, the village ends at this street and the view is uninterrupted.

The house is constructed on three levels:

At street level is the main living accommodation, lounge and kitchen and a shaded terrace whose views over the Mediterranean countryside are a very pretty sight indeed.

Upstairs are three en suite bedrooms and another terrace with an even better view.

Downstairs is a timber-decked pool garden.

Let's give you an overview and more on these three floors.

First of all, the setting: the property is positioned in a side street, below the road used by cars threading their way through the old village, and apart from Bedroom 3, all the accommodation and its terraces face the countryside and hills, so it’s very quiet.

There’s a garage for a small car (a rare feature for an Andalucian village), and if you have more than one car, you can park on the street.

Just seconds away is arguably Gaucin’s best restaurant.

Inside, smooth old tiles underfoot lead you through a hallway to the main living area and kitchen which opens directly to a terrace.

We thought the furnishings an aesthetic blend of antique and new: old flooring and wood beams, chandeliers, colourful contemporary artwork and a comfy white sofa. We found the leather sofa more pleasing on the eye than easy to relax on, and one of us liked the timber terrace dining table while the other would have preferred a more conventional one, but these were small quibbles in a very good quality house.

Gaucin’s altitude saves it from the summer heat that can afflict the coast, so the air con’s rarely necessary.

The three en suite bedrooms upstairs are wood-beamed and have that alluring aroma one associates with historic residences. Their en suite shower rooms are imaginatively decorated in different colours and each bedroom has a hairdryer.

One of the bedrooms is positioned at the street-side of the house (you may hear some passing traffic), where it is cheerfully illuminated.

The furnished terrace on the same floor as the bedrooms has terrific views. It faces west, so you catch the last rays at sunset.

Stairs go down to the rear of the property, where a wood deck surrounds the small swimming pool. It’s a welcome feature from spring to autumn, but do bear in mind it’s not that big and this is a village house with neighbours, so in theory the pool garden could be overlooked. For pool holidays in complete privacy one should opt for a country villa.

Four sunloungers are provided and the western aspect provides sun and shade according to the time of day.

Lighting guides you along the wood deck for night swims and the pool has underwater lighting, too.

For shopping, café-bars and restaurants (the Gaucin Guide we send before you travel has our recommendations) you don’t need to drive, while beaches are 30 minutes down the road and Ronda an interesting 45-minute drive away through the mountains.

Unfortunately this property is in need of refurbishment, particularly the bathrooms which are very dated. The lady who looks after the house is very helpful."

Rustical Update

This property has had a new owner since October 2022 and the new property owner confirms that the house was in need of some renovation and cosmetic work -including some minor repairs-. This work is carried out in March 2023 and should be completed by 1st April 2023 we are told.

This is a lovely, characterful house in a very nice setting. The interior is very special and attractive. The views are simply amazing and we found ourselves sitting for long periods just looking out over the mountains. We found the kitchen to be very well equipped and it had everything we needed and more. We were very impressed with the thoughtful treats that had been left for us by the delightful housekeeper. The house was beautifully clean and the bedrooms were very comfortable and nicely made up. The house could do with some light repairs. Some doors wouldn't close (catching on the floor) and some of the fittings in the bathrooms were coming off the wall as well as some broken plaster etc. One of the sofas is virtually unusable. The table on the terrace is interesting but very impractical. The upper terrace had no furniture at all which was a shame. The area by the pool needs some attention and an update. A wider space along the pool would be much more useful in such a small area rather than the wide flowerbed which only left a narrow path. Having said all that we would not hesitate to come back. The communications with the property owner on arrival and during our stay were very good. We will absolutely book with Rustical Travel again and we are glad that we have found you."

We loved this property- very convenient for being in the town and local trips- worth going the extra distance to the beaches at Tarifa. The pool area is small but very pretty. The jasmine hedges give privacy to one side but could do with trimming to allow some more sunlight in the late afternoon. Be aware of less privacy to the other side if the neighbours are using their pool area but didn’t bother us at all- you are in a town after all. The house is very spacious and we loved eating on the terrace with the views. It is looked after very well by the lovely cleaner who was so helpful and friendly! Booking and payment was very simple. We wish we could have stayed another week!"

We loved our holiday in Gaucin. It’s a lovely place with good restaurants and cafes. We also had a good walk and several interesting trips out, including a day in Gibraltar. The property itself is attractive and we did spend several days there relaxing by the pool which, though small, was ideal for us and our four year old granddaughter. The ground floor outside eating area was also excellent and the kitchen exceptionally well equipped. Many thanks."

We were let down as some things promised were not there. When we highlighted these things they quickly resolved but it was an extra hastle you don't want in holiday. We were also asked to make time for someone to come and take pictures of the villa right in the middle of our holiday which we were very angry about and in fact advised I couldn't accommodate this. We later learned that the villa was up for sale and the pictures were for a prospective buyer."

Since October 1, 2022, the house has a new owner. The new property owner claims to be committed to carry out extensive renovations so that the quality of the villa will be further improved for a perfect stay.

Rustical travel very professional company to deal with made everything easy for us. The house was fantastic and the pool was an added bonus. It was the most relaxing holiday . I felt the decking area by pool needs a complete uplift as it was loose in areas the house itself i felt needed a bit of modication as in air conditioning did not work in some rooms and the crockery maybe some simple white plates cups etc.. other than that i could not fault this place. If you are looking for a complete relaxing holiday this is the place .lovely restaurants quiet tranquil town , Day trips can be done easily but car hire is a must .All in All we had an amazing holiday ."

Lovely little house in the center of Gaucín village. The house comes with a lovely small pool and spacious bedrooms as well as fantastic views over the countryside. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and we have created fond memories of our time spent there. Only drawback is that parking is difficult as the garage is not really large enough to take anything larger than a very small car, however we always found a parking a short walk away."

Booking with Rustical travel was very good. Everyone has been helpful and responses to any questions were quick. The property in Gaucin is a great place to stay, a good property in a good location. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is that the swimming pool needs some maintenance, the pool tiles, under the water are coming off and the pool is beginning to look shabby. When we were there, no-one came to service the pool or look after the garden, which is getting a bit over-grown. I understand that the owners are trying to sell this property but if they are happy to take rental money before it has been sold then they do need to maintain things. I still think it is a good property."

Rustical Update

We were informed that the person in charge of maintenance of the pool does it very early in the morning precisely to be as discreet and unnoticed as possible.
On summer 2020, the property manager confirmed that the pool has been painted recently, and the tiles and wooden deck around the pool have been replaced.

The village Gaucín is wonderfully and charming small place withy good options for eating etc. The house is very well located near the center of the town and walking distance to small grocery. The house is nicely decorated and very charming with 2 floors, charming bedrooms with own toilet and a wonderfully view from the 2 terraces. The pool area is great and relaxing. We had a very enjoyable stay in this spacious, clean and well-equipped house. There are good views towards the coast from the terraces, supplemented by the calls of the donkey, bull frogs and poultry. The pool area is very pleasant and well-furnished, though the decking could do with some attention in places. The welcome pack was excellent and we wished we hadn't bothered diverting to the supermarket at the coast . There were instruction booklets for the electrical goods but some of the general information was a bit outdated - and the doors still creak. The location is good, close to bars and some decent restaurants, and a short walk from the supermarket, but parking outside is difficult - we generally parked on the road to Ronda, a couple of minutes walk away. The walk up to the castle, with all the spring flowers out, was a highlight. Rustical Travel were excellent and their travel directions were very clear, though finding where to stop for the house was not easy the first time."

Rustical Update

We have informed the property manager about the pool decking needing attention in some places. Likewise, he confirmed that the outdated instruction booklets will be updated, and he will take a look at the doors that creak.

We had a lovely holiday at Gaucin staying at RD65, the house was a delight and we felt had a truly Spanish feel to it. The village is beautiful and very friendly. The only problem we had was a smell of drains in the front bedroom, which we believe was due to the amount of rain we had that week. We only used the pool once but this was due to the bad weather we had that week, would love to return again with better weather! The organisation from booking to checking out was excellent thank you for all the information that you supplied it was first class."

Nick | August | 2018

We liked the villa a lot. It was a good size and had an excellent view: we particularly enjoyed watching the donkey give birth in the adjacent field! The pool was also a good size and had suitable poolside furniture. The outside space was suited our needs. The villa has an excellent position in the town although there is clearly an issue with parking: however, there is nothing that can be done about that and any visitor would accept this as part of the deal. The only things we would particularly suggest would be the following: 1 Maintaining the electrical equipment - the DVD player was unusable, for example. 2 Auditing/editing the crockery and kitchen pots/pans so that there is something for all everyday eventualities. 3 Information about things like what to do with rubbish, how to turn on the air conditioning seemed to be missing from the house information although the information we were sent before we arrived was excellent. Hope this is useful. Would definitely use Rustical Travel again."

Rustical Update

We have also passed to him the suggestion to have more crocker, and add information on what to do with the rubbish and how to operate the air conditioning to the Housebook. In March 2019 we are informed that the DVD was replaced with a new one.

The pre booking process and dealing with your staff was great. The website is excellent with great content. Also - the travel info, descriptions and other tips were really useful on arrival. We found the villa to be exactly as described and it was a really lovely place to stay for two weeks. Gaucin is lovely and very much felt like a local Spanish village, and not too full of tourists. Which was our preference! I'd like to mention Josefi the housekeeper. She was there on our arrival and answered any queries we had via text or Whatsapp (phone messaging over internet) promptly. Not only did she help out with issues (aircon not working in one bedroom) but she also provided advice on places to visit or how to get there. She was great. Anyway - thanks again, and I'm sure we'd recommend you to others."

The house was wonderful and exactly as pictured. Josefi was very pleasant and professional in checking us in. However, your directions to the property were terrible. You sent us to a gas station where there was no payphone for us to call Josefi. The person at the gas station couldn't tell us where there was a payphone, nor did he offer his phone for our use. We tried a restaurant across the street with the same result, but the woman there did direct us to some place in town where she thought there might be a phone. It took a long time and was a lot of trouble for us to find a telephone. Josefi told us that other people came directly to the house with clear directions. This is our only complaint, but it was a major one on the day of our arrival."

Rustical Update

For this property we have now arranged for clients to go direct to the house, where the keyholder will meet them. We strongly recommend clients to bring an operable mobile phone on holiday with them.

Fantastic views and good quality property. There were a few niggles with the fixtures and fittings but mostly the property was of a high standard and the location on the edge of the village but still close to bars and restaurants was good. Only a few negative comments really and I imagine they have been said before. Access with a car or a larger vehicle is very poor. I would suggest telling people to park on the roadside close to the viaduct on the road out of the village towards Ronda. Its only a short walk from there to the property. The condition of the road up from the coast is very poor and of course difficult to drive in the dark. There is a comment about this in the information provided but I would make it clearer. Internet is good but a better selection of TV channels would be very welcome, especially in late and early season when outdoor living is more restricted. Hope that helps! Barry"

It's a lovely house, and we spent a very happy week there. The house is very nicely and distinctively appointed, and the terrace at the back is lovely at all times of day, with beautiful views and a surprising sense of privacy - also at the pool, which feels quite enclosed. At night there is an entertaining chorus of frogs and insects, congregating around pools and water tanks among the patchwork of back gardens. Gaucin itself is a great place to spend a few days, with relatively easy access to both Ronda (we went by train) and the coast. Hiring a car is a necessity, really. Overall we were really pleased to have chosen this cottage: as a family of four, with kids of 10 and 5, it suited us really well. We'd certainly like to return."
