Overview

Solid, traditional and genuine: this first impression of the house is confirmed by longer acquaintance, as one notes the wood beams and ceilings, terracotta underfoot, a hunting and fishing theme in paintings and nicely glazed china plates.

An easy drive from Gaucin village brings you to this very secluded old country villa and its inviting outdoor spaces. When we come across properties like this, we cannot help but tell the unique stories behind them. Back in another time, this villa used to be a roadhouse not just servicing arrieros bringing fresh fish by mule from the coastal villages to the interior of Malaga —using an old mule pathway from Algeciras to Ronda— but also shoeing horses and serving meals to travellers in the afternoon. In the evenings, locals would gather here to chill and dance to live music.

Cared for with detail by its proud owners and still in the same family, the property has evolved into a beautiful villa full of character offering comfort and a fantastic holiday experience in the heart of Malaga.

The villa and its private parking back onto a virtually unused country lane. Unseen from here, all the interesting gardens and the grassy pool area are on the other side of the villa where you will enjoy perfect privacy and bucolic views.

With an outstanding Master bedroom upstairs and three ground floor bedrooms, it is suitable for families or a couple who want somewhere special to stay all to themselves.

The kitchen comes properly equipped and there is no shortage of glasses and crockery.

It's cool and fresh inside, providing a welcome contrast with the warm-to-hot outdoors. Fans are also provided in case you need them.

There's indoor dining to seat 8 people and the living area has comfortable sofas for everyone also, by a large fireplace that comes into its own in winter.

Downstairs are three bedrooms. One's a spacious, airy room, simply furnished with table and chairs and enjoying direct access to the main terrace via french windows.

The most striking feature of the house, where a forge once served to shod wayfarers' horses while they put up at the hostelry, is the upstairs. The entire first floor is one fabulous bed-sitting room with its own en suite bathroom. The great expanse of the space comes as quite a surprise: even after providing the room with a new king size bed, there is still plenty of space and a sitting area under a vaulted wood ceiling. There's a sofa, rocking chairs, and windows with different views. There's also a good wooden cot. We did find the bathtub a little small and it's probably best used as a shower.

This upstairs floor-and-bedroom has a door at the foot of the stairs to close it off from the sitting room below. Some people will desire this, while parents with very young children may wish to consider if they want to be separated from the little ones on a different floor.

Outside the kitchen is a simply furnished dining area, whose shade makes it ideal for lunches in the fresh air. Children will be curious about the swallow's nest which is something of a fixture here, the birds returning year after year to the same simple home.

Continue round to the main terrace and you come to the main outdoor area, where you're likely to be spending the lion's share of your holiday time.

Dining with a view from the broad terrace is very agreeable and you have the use of a large brick-built barbecue among the clementine trees.

Gardens, which include a gated pool garden, run down to beautiful Ronda hill country, with some pretty walks in the woods from the doorstep. The swimming pool is a large 10 m by 5 m. It's tiled in mosaic and there's a pool shower. You're secluded and not overlooked, looking out at the natural scene and a few cows —who needs a lawn mower?— belonging to the finca, whose bells are about the only sound you will hear in the distance. There's a handsome white bull, too, who roams the hillside.

After our most recent visit in Spring 2015, we were very pleasantly surprised to see that plenty of work, as well as dedication and attention to detail, has been put in to raise general standars, such as a new latex matress, memory foam pillows or the improved fence outside —just to name a few— and many other little details that keep adding to the general comfort and quality standards of this unique holiday home.

No shortage of sunbeds here, and there are brushwood sunshades, although the poolside trees provide a better, more complete shade.

The views and the peacefulness go very happily together.

YOUR REVIEWS

David | June | 2023

We loved the house, the garden, pool and the beautiful rural surroundings. The bed was very comfortable. The kitchen had everything we needed. The pool was a great size and we swam every day. The barbecue was really good and the gardens were lovely with plenty of places to sit and enjoy a coffee or glass of wine. We would not hesitate to rebook this property. Great service from Rustical travel as usual."

A nice, spacious villa in a lovely setting. Garden and pool area very attractive (though wooden pool loungers are falling apart). Interior of villa needs work: kitchen very dated; lighting harsh; no proper shower. You really must make anyone bringing a dog aware that the boundary fencing is not secure."

Booking service was great. We loved the remote nature of the property. The house is beautifully decorated with the master suite affording gorgeous views. Great position to explore further south of the area."

Abigail | August | 2021

It is indeed a pretty house with a lovely pool. We were disappointed with the quality of the kitchen with its very old oven, fridges with rusty doors and broken shelves in the doors (have photos if you would like them), inadequate extractor which dripped grease each time it was switched on (yuck!) plus the general lack of working space. We were advised the pool would be cleaned 3 times a week by Paco who did the gardening but it was only cleaned once in 2 weeks by the owner. The track going past the house was used a surprising amount and, as the house is near the main road, the noise from motorbikes on the weekends is pretty intrusive. On the plus side, the owners were very responsive to requests and quickly fixed/replaced other items. We had a good two weeks there and, overall, enjoyed our stay."

Rustical Update

On 2023 the property owners confirm they bought a new large fridge and an oven.

Fabulous, charming and remote. Just stunning! Perfect for our family of 6. Well equipped and in a beautiful setting. The pool was popular in the heat of July! The agent and the owner were both very helpful. Would highly recommend this villa and Rustical Travel. We’ll use them again."

Sabine | July | 2019

We absolutely loved our stay, the house was beautiful, great secluded location, well equipped kitchen. The only problem was that the dishwasher was not working, they had promised to send someone but that never happened. And just a thought- in the trip preparations it said to bring beach/pool towels. That surprised me a bit with a property like that and was a bit tricky with limited Ryan Air luggage, and in the end there were really nice beach towels in the house. So maybe specify, that you would only need towels if going to the beach? Thanks for everything, it was really a great place, and also communication with your company was perfect!"

Rustical Update

The Facilities section indicates that there are pool towels provided at this property.

My family of five had a lovely holiday here. The property is really beautiful and far away from any noise or trouble, but close to Gaucin for groceries and dining. We explored the whole area, but also spent a lot of time at the house enjoying the pool and the grounds. This corner of Andalusia was magical to visit. We went to Ronda, but also little nearby villages, swimming holes and hiking trails. The inside of the house stayed cool on the hot afternoons, which was a relief. We enjoyed every minute of our stay! Thank you very much!"

Beautiful location, very well equipped, and the owners went out of their way to be helpful, providing cots etc. Generally very well maintained, except that the gate to the pool has warped a bit over time, so it's hard to shut it properly A lot of stone floors and a few rough edges, so expect a few bumps and scrapes if you have a wobbly toddler who won't slow down - but older and younger children will be fine. All in all, thoroughly recommended!"

The property was lovely and very private we will be booking it again next year but for 2 weeks as we only booked 1 this year. Great shop in Gaucin that did home made cooking so if we wanted we could go in there each day. The sound of the cow bells each morning also very relaxing. The service from Rustical Travel was 10/10 and all the directions perfect. I want to come later in year but partner wants to go Sailing!!! Will be in touch soon about the 2 weeks next year. Thank you for a wonderful experience. Sue Stuart"

Thank you for a beautiful and comfortable villa. We arrived later than expected and were so grateful to Ines who looked after us well and gave us a wonderful welcome. The villa was well equipped and had everything we needed. The pool was superb, the views amazing and the sound of the cow bells in the evening with a glass of wine was so relaxing and peaceful. The Gaucin area is somewhere we would definitely visit again."

We had a wonderful time at the property reference RD56. The property was in a perfect location with superb views. Our only criticism was that with the master bedroom upstairs being so vast a larger double bed would have been expected."

Master bedroom has now a king size bed since early 2015.

You are right it is a bit of a distant memory! But here goes: We really enjoyed our stay in RD56 and Gaucin was very pretty and was a good place for restaurants and shops particularly the daily fish market and butcher (although it was a bit of a drive)Good points 1. plenty of loungers by pool 2. very friendly owner who kept us supplied with figs! 3. Lots of outside eating areas 4. Serious barbecue 5. Good bedrooms (we thought the details suggested the downstairs rooms would only be suitable for children but we found them perfectly ok for our "grown up" children and partners.) 6. Good separate laundry area 7. Great views and melodious cow bells! 8. Paella delivery. Points for improvement 1. Pillows not enough and poor quality -asked the caretaker for more but she was unable to supply. 2. Kitchen equipment a bit rudimentary eg no whisk, weighing scales, cake tin. Making a birthday cake a bit of a challenge but we did manage! Pans had been non-stick but this had worn off so difficult for cooking. Plenty of frying pans but could have done with more saucepans especially medium size. Good supply of crockery, cutlery and glasses. 3. Upstairs bathroom sink a bit tired, enamel worn and a lot of lime scale. 4. Lighting a bit random, many bulbs gone and couldn't get light to work on stairs despite changing bulb. Also lighting on outside terrace a bit poor for supper. (it was September so less of a problem probably in summer) Fine by the barbecue. 5. Provision of a visitors book might be an idea. Most places we stay have these and people can jot down good restaurants, place they've visited, what day you can get fresh churros from the market etc "

Rustical Update

Kitchen equipment and lighting has been improved for 2015.
