Overview

Leaving the long sandy beach of Bahia Casares behind, we drive through the natural protected parkland of Sierra Crestellina. The mountain range thick with trees sweeps down to meet the sea, and long lingering trails crisscross through the lush Mediterranean landscape.

After 20 minutes we arrive at the villa; carved into private grounds on a slope with stunning vistas. Here, you feel connected to the landscape; vultures and eagles fly overhead, the low alpine altitude brings a soft climate, and sharp limestone peaks rise like a fortress against the blue sky. Being so close to the developed Costa Del Sol we are amazed to find such an untapped spot.

The set up of the villa is simple; the whole design and aesthetic is geared towards those who want to get back to nature in the heart of Andalusia and who can live without the details of luxury.

The highlight is of course the commanding lush green views, the 9-meter pool which certainly looks inviting on a humid afternoon, and the fabulous terrace with sun loungers for sitting back and soaking up the Spanish light.

Inside, the kitchen, living space and bedrooms echo that simplistic feel – while you may not have the splendor of a king-sized bed or top-notch amenities; the space is perfectly functional, and the pleasure of tranquility is a wonderful feeling.

The villa itself feels sweetly secluded. Despite being placed in the heart of the wild; there is plenty of fun-fueled activity close by.

Walkers will be in their element with the endless trails, and beach lovers will find their bliss less than 25-minutes from the front door.

Those who are willing to drive a little further will be treated to the wild sight of Spain’s Atlantic coast, boasting some of the best beaches this side of Southern Europe.

For inland adventures, the nearby village of Casares looks like a page straight out of a storybook with its white washed houses, rugged backdrop, and lazy tapas afternoons.

A little deeper into the Ronda Mountains and the charming town of Ronda is a must, as is the village of Gaucin with its historic castle and views that stretch to Gibraltar.

One thing’s for, active travelers won’t be bored.

Nicky | September | 2023

We had a lovely time staying in the mountains. The property has a terrace/balcony at the back with a large table where the views are breathtaking, an amazing place for breakfast whilst watching the vultures above. The swimming pool was gorgeous and well maintained and plenty of seating areas/loungers. The house is rustic but so charming and in the most peaceful setting. The owners were really kind and helpful. I would highly recommend."

A lovely villa in a perfectly peaceful spot but only 20 minutes drive to the nearest beach. Amazing pool area and views. The owners, Maria and Sebastien, were lovely people who made us feel very welcome from start to finish. We miss them already and we were only there for one week. Car is essential unless you don't mind the half hour walk to the village down the rural track, which felt quite precarious at points but we managed the walk there and back once and it was a bit of an adventure! I miss looking at the mountain from the terrace which was beautiful both during the day and at night. We loved our stay here and would come again. Really appreciated the attentiveness of Rustical Travel, who responded to any query we had quickly and helped to make our rural stay as relaxed and enjoyable as possible."

The villa was absolutely lovely with stunning views and complete silence save for the occasional tweets from the birds and goat bells. Very tranquil. We enjoyed watching vultures and eagles circle in the sky, and the pool, which is kept clean by Maria and Sebastian regularly, and very relaxing. Surprisingly it was warm yet refreshing after lazing in the sun. The villa had everything you need and there are some good supermarket’s in Estapona (Carrefour just out of town was really good) and Manilva (where we had a lovely stroll, played crazy golf at Roman Oasis (good fun) and lunch at Mini India which was really good) There are some lovely walks around the property and a couple of times we walked into Casares where we had good food at the Bar Castillo and Sarmiento restaurants. The climb back little strenuous with belly full of food, however can cool off in shade and a fountain on the way, then just jump in pool again when you get back to villa! We went to Malaga for a couple of days which was full of history, little alleys, plazas, good shopping and food. You need a car (we hired a small Kia which was fine ) however if you have an aversion to heights be warned the road to the villa from Casares is up a mountain road and whilst not a dirt track it can be quite scary at times. You just have to take it really slowly. Maria and Sebastian were fantastic and despite our lack of Spanish and their lack of English we seemed to manage to have lovely conversations with them when they came to clean the pool and tend to their vegetable garden from which we had tomatoes, peppers and onions. All were delicious. We enjoyed 2 weeks here in August and can honestly say it was absolutely lovely and would recommend it to anyone who wants to get away from it all. Rustical travel were brilliant too. They kept us informed of the booking process and also sent us lots of really helpful information before we took our holiday including directions to Casares and things to do. Could not fault them at all. A wonderful holiday and already missing the tranquillity of the villa."

We loved our stay. The peace and seclusion was perfect. The pool is lovely and the house very homely, if a tad cluttered. Our hosts were really warm and welcoming and around most days either to clean the pool or tend the land beneath the house. There’s a small veg patch we could help ourselves to, which was a real treat. Casares itself is a stunning village around 15 mins drive to the coast. We especially enjoyed its small local Friday market. The house is up a track and steep drive so a car is definitely needed if you want to get around, but there are some gorgeous walks very close to the house. Overall, a wonderful and peaceful stay in a magical location."

We had an excellent stay at this house just outside Cacares. The house had everything you could need, quite, well equipped, air con in 2 rooms and the pool was perfect! Yes the clothes hanging options in the room could be improved and it could do with a little declutter, but this did not bother us at all. Highlights: spacious comfortable sitting room, great wifi, well equipped kitchen, with big fridge, fast wash cycle washing machine, gorgeous drinking water, plenty sitting/dining areas. We were looking forward to lots of barbecues, but could not due to fire risk, which is totally understandable in june/july in a wooded area. When we were there the sun got to the property(over mountain) from 10am to 8pm exactly, plenty time for sitting and dipping in the fabulous pool. Cacares is a quite village, beautiful and great to see local life in action, amazing coffee in the square. Definitely recommend local restaurant Sarmiento: expensive but worth it as a treat. BTW any restuarants we went to during our stay didn't have children's menus, so expensive for bigger families. Days out; Rhonda is a must see, this was 2nd time going there and would go again! Spectacular views, great bull ring and plenty shopping. Bahia water park by Algeciras, great fun and safe Estapona old town, fabulous flower lined streets, gorgeous square Plaza de la Florez; best restaurant Fogón 18. Baños romanos de la Hedionda, Casares, sulphur baths, the most relaxing experience ever! Horse riding just outside Cacares; Riding fun in the sun. Overall fantastic base for all of the above. Lastly the hosts were wonderful, friendly, kind people, a pleasure to deal with (we relied on Google translate alot!)"

Simon | August | 2021

Firstly to comment on Rustical - really easy to deal with and really helpful last year with the Covid problems. Great on communication and property details. For this villa, as per other reviews, the location is superb for peace and wonderful views – for us I think the most picturesque place we have stayed at, as we love really rural countryside. Mari and husband are delightful and helpful, and with the aid of Google Translate, we got along really well, so much so that we joined them for drinks down at Antiguo bar nuevo a couple of times. They let us know when music was being played in the square, which is a regular occurrence. Mari’s husband provided free fruit and veg straight from the garden – figs were amazing. We were very happy with the facilities, beds, kitchen, wifi, though would agree about the bedroom storage – lots of wardrobes and no hanging space except for bizarrely in the bathroom. Would highly recommend if you want peace and quiet and are not looking for lively nearby nightlife. We saw Griffon vultures everyday, occasionally right overhead. To add a bit about the area - we are both fairly fit and do quite a lot of running (despite 50+ !) so were happy to walk the 2km down and back to Casares in the evening, but is a bit of a climb home - normal people will opt to drive !. There is also a circular walk of about 4 miles via a ‘Refuge’ that offers further great views, though last half mile from Refuge down to Casares is very steep and rough, in contrast to the rest of the walk/run. If you are not planning to self cater then do a bit of planning for Mondays and Tuesdays as most bars/restaurant in the town do not serve food on those days. The Coviran supermarket in Calle Carrera is much better than the one on the town square and easy to park at. There are a number of eateries outside of the village – just do the normal research for reviews and check if still open ! Castle is worth walking up to. Gaucin is worth visiting, bigger than Casares, more dining options. We tend to select different places to stay for any breaks. This will be an exception as we look forward to returning both for the location and the great hospitality provided by the hosts."

The location of the house is superb: on it’s own, in the hills, surrounded by nature. The pool is a big plus! The house itself is cosy, nothing chique or fancy, but fully equipped with all that you need provided. Loads of towels and bed covers, so no need to bring your own. I would like to suggest for the owners to renew the parasol and add a second one, as during the day there is little or no shade on the terrace. The friendly owners keep the pool super clean and shared their home grown fruit and vegs with us! We would definitely come back, we had a fantastic time."

We (Mum, Dad, 2 kids and Grandma) had a fantastic stay at this property. It is a wonderful homely property and Mari was very helpful when needed. The photos do not really do the views justice and it is in a very quiet location. The swimming pool was a big selling point for us. They do grow every fruit bearing tree under the sun in the adjacent garden and we were lucky enough to taste their tomatoes, peppers and onions. The vultures and eagles put on a show everyday and we were lucky enough to spot Ibex / wild boar. The insect life is also something to behold! There's also an excellent walk around the valley from the property. Casares had a really friendly, relaxed atmosphere (considering the circumstances) is a short drive down the track. Would love to visit again (particularly when cooler!)."

Loved it, and particularly liked our hosts who were extremely helpful and generous. The pool was lovely, though it did make our swimming costumes turn green! A really splendid holiday, just what we needed."

Rustical Update

We have done some research and found that the problem of swimsuits getting green is related to the use of some sunscreens with very high Sun Protection Factor that often have metal components (such as titanium). These metal components react with the pool treatment products in the water and produce and oxidation process that can turn the swimsuits (or even blonde hair) green. So, even though the pool water is fine, it can generate this green dye if it's combined with these particular types of sunscreens.

For the price, the property is very good value. But don't expect everything to work and crisp linen sheets! The pool was kept sparkly every day. And the owners gave us a very warm welcome. The location is great for walking into Casares and there is a wonderful walk around the opposite mountain. We were working, so the intermittent wifi signal and poor 4G phone signal was a challenge. We really enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it. The location is isolated (only 2km outside Casares but on a mountainside) but peaceful and the views are amazing. The road to the villa is along the side of the mountain and a slightly nerve wracking drive but we got used to it. You don't need a four wheel drive but it wouldn't hurt! The villa is lovely and set in its own grounds. The pool is absolutely delightful. It was hot weather when we stayed so we swam in it 2 or 3 times a day. The owners come and look after the pool and the garden and they are lovely and helpful. They don't speak any English and we didn't speak any Spanish but we managed to communicate somehow. Casares is a pleasant town too."

Paul | July | 2018

Great location if you have a hire car and want privacy in a villa with a pool, 5 minutes drive from characterful local town of Casares. The owners were very friendly helpful, the pool and terrace are fantastic (a second parasol needed though) and the villa is spacious. The kitchen bathrooms need some updating but this was outweighed by the pool, views, privacy and location. Some good walks from the villa with amazing views to Gibraltar even Morocco, need to avoid doing those in the heat of the day though. Griffon vultures eagles were soaring overhead every day. Ronda is a worthwhile visit, and the bridge gorge there are spectacular in the evening as the sun's going down. Beware of wild boar crossing the road on the way back over the mountains at night though! The nearest beach is about 30 mins away at the end of the MA8300 where it meets the A-7 but it's typically Costa Del Sol. Less crowded more rustic was the cove at Playa de Cala Sardina, 20 mins further down the coast. The parking is free and there are two bar/restaurants on the beach either end, 500m apart, Il Sono at the north end is more upmarket and serves food in the evening, Bar Cai more of a beach bar with tapas. On balance this villa is a great place to stay, would be outstanding with a kitchen bath/shower rooms re-fresh."
