Overview
If you want to go on holidays with family or friends to a hide-away in the early Pyrenees, this rustic, stone-built cottage in the Catalonia province of Lleida could be just the place for you. The setting and views are of a spectacular landscape that blends Mediterranean pine with beech and coniferous alpine forest.
The pictures tell the story.
In winter, this is a popular weekend mountain retreat for Spanish city people, although two days gives precious little opportunity to explore and enjoy the Pyrenean mountain world, the perfectly preserved Romanic villages, good restaurants, hikes, river-rafting or wild swimming in the local river.
Closer to home, the swimming pool provides a more convenient and welcome chance to cool off and feel healthy.
There are sunloungers, deckchairs, and hammocks slung in the trees to encourage you to enjoy outdoor life here, and plenty of shady spots.
The house is surrounded by exuberant nature, all very pretty, and the cottage entrance is via a walled, lawned garden with a pub-bench dining table and colourful plants (different ones blooming according to the season), a lovely outdoor spot for meals. The garden is also a secure place for keeping a dog, this being one of our pet-friendly properties.
The Catalan couple who owns the property occasionally come to stay in the larger house behind the cottage, so we don’t offer it as a completely private place, although your privacy is of course very much respected. Otherwise, if you need anything, the friendly caretaker lives just a few km away.
The holiday home itself has been featured in Country Home magazines as a characteristic example of a Catalan Pyrenees dwelling which combines traditional materials with a modern sensibility towards the environment. The house suits the alpine atmosphere, comfortable but not luxurious – expect comfy sofas and beds, even dressing gowns for adults, but no delicate touches or carpets – above all it's ideal for those who want to delve into the exciting nature which is all around you here.
There is solar power and a conscientious use of electricity is encouraged, although the system is powerful enough to run a washing machine (although it cannot run hot water programs, only cold). There’s an oven, fridge, 4-ring hob and all you need to cook meals for seven people, but no microwave or dishwasher. A low-wattage hairdryer is provided but no electrical entertainment items. You’re properly off the beaten track here: a sideways shift on the map which shows the Boi Valley (a world heritage site with the Boi Taull ski resort) towards Andorra. Smugglers used to make their way past here from France.
There's 3G coverage that usually allows smart phone users to connect to internet, otherwise drive to Coll de Nargó for WiFi, or Tremp, where there's a cybercafé and a municipal centre with internet.
The natural entrance is through the garden to a spacious old dining room with large windows – just right for keeping an eye on children, if need be – and tremendous views of the wooded mountains. Old stable implements adorn the stone walls and rusticity in stone and wood is evident from the word go.
Appropriately enough, the kitchen communicates with the dining room on the ground floor. Up a flight of wooden stairs, a living room with sofas and a glass-fronted fireplace is a very agreeable place to sit around and read, chat and relax.
Young children love it up in their "play-and-bedroom" under the eaves, and most can manage the protected wood stairs up to the attic room, although we don't recommend it for toddlers due to the verticality of the steps up to this room.
Each bedroom, as well as the living room, has its own woodburning stove and firewood is included in the rental.
In the summer, you can enjoy baking heat.
Active families will be in their element here. Rafting and canoeing can be arranged locally and below a Roman bridge you can swim in the river. It really is very picturesque. An hour by car takes you to the National Park of Aigues Tortes, an area of outstanding natural beauty, or to Andorra, a shopper’s paradise.
The Roman heritage of the area is to be found in a surprisingly good state of preservation and there are excellent examples of popular architecture, churches and medieval bridges.

YOUR REVIEWS
Lovely stay at a gorgeous and quiet holiday home."
Rustical Update
We have been informed by the property manager that they have cleaned the mould in the washing machine (which can appear if the door is left closed). The manager also confirmed that the washing machine cannot use hot water; the property is powered by solar energy and isn't able to heat the water for the washing machine.
+ Read morewe had a wonderful week in this house. our tip: buy a lot of food and spend the whole week in the house, without driving anywhere else. enjoy walking in the forest, swimming in the pool, and especially enjoy the quiet, the isolation, and life in the middle of nature. the owners were really nice too. very highly recommended."
+ Read moreMy family and I had a wonderful week. The owners, Popena and Jordi were such lovely people and their attention to detail in this wonderfully, charming and rustic property stole our hearts. Its location - perched on a forested hillside - was idillic, and so peaceful. The pool was refreshing and the views from the terrace were spellbounding. We all (including our dog) enjoyed the nearby river with it's clear water and pools for swimming. Our three children loved their attic room, the circular walks through the forest...and the wildlife - particularly the visiting fox, the praying mantis in the potted plant and the snakes down at the river! A very relaxing holiday - Thank you !"
+ Read moreThis was not a vacation so much as a fantastic experience from day 1. a) Rusticaltravel was super-responsive to a few important questions we had, even responding immediately during the weekend. Excellent starter. b) The prep material for location, visits, food and expectations-setting in general was brilliant and spot-on. The same for arrival and instructions from the landlords, who are probably the most cozy and friendly people we've ever met. c) The place (CA10) is an absolutely gorgeous cottage, top-notch for nature lovers. Beautiful spotless skies, deep forests, untouched land, long mountain walks, deep echo and some shy night visitors make the experience something out of a fairy tale. The house is fully equipped. Sufficiently isolated to ensure your de-stress treatment goes all the way, including mobile coverage, no internet or TV, but close enough to local towns to provide you with all the fantastic food you can expect from Catalunya. We spent 10 days with my wife and 4 year old kid and had a total blast of a time. Every day something new awaited. 11 out of 10 stars. Fully recommended and something worth of everyone's bucket list."
+ Read moreThis is a beautiful property, set in stunning scenery. The property is spacious and presented beautifully. There is a large outside space with a cool pool, which is perfect in the heat. The property is very isolated down a very bumpy track. The power in the house is all from solar energy and the water just from rainwater collected in a tank. This is a great place to escape from modern life, especially as it is so far from anywhere- half an hour to the nearest village. Get your supplies in and enjoy the scenery!"
+ Read moreWe had a wonderful time staying at the house in the pyrenees, and I just wanted to say thank you for helping to make our stay so enjoyable, and for dealing with all the complications. We only had this very short honeymoon but it was blissfully peaceful and relaxing there. If you could pass our thanks. its a lovely area and we hope to be back again someday, All the best."
