Overview

There are several attractive valleys and forests that grace the mountains of Grazalema Natural Park and this cottage is situated in one of the prettiest.

An easy motor along a good, quiet road from Ronda, just ten minutes past Lake Zahara, brings you to a valley cottage whose views stretch for mile after mile along its wooded contours.

Your self-catering lodging is a thoughtfully converted piece of genuine old Andalucia, no imitation.

It’s a place made for a typical Andalucian lifestyle that has you passing from indoors to outdoors and back again.

From the entrance gate and parking, a garden path leads down to a terraced dining area and striking viewpoint (see photo gallery) just outside the house.

Inside, you will find refurbished accommodation that retains its traditional atmosphere.

The living, dining and kitchen areas are tiled in Andalucian terracotta and the ceiling lined with cut cane. Old agricultural implements adorn the walls, lamps are fashioned from wood, and the light switches are of the now sought-after antique ceramic kind.

The kitchen is properly equipped for six people and there is a choice of sitting and dining areas. We especially liked the balcony from this main room, as a place to sit and read or relax, with its view right over the valley and the sound of the little river tumbling down a series of small waterfalls way below.

You now leave by a door and cross under a furnished, covered patio to the sleeping accommodation that is preceded by a simple, stone-floored sitting room.

Close by the cottage is a large and lovely garden with a swimming pool, all completely private. The garden and pool can be gated closed if you have small children, and you can swim by night with underwater lighting.

The blue mosaic of the pool contrasts picturesquely with the greens of the lawned gardens and surrounding trees: olive and orange, cherry and nispero, fig, carob and bay.

There are also herbs that you are welcome to use to condiment meals (rosemary, oregano and mint), while the air is often scented by lavender, jasmine and night jasmine by the pool.

Walk out the other side of the shaded patio and a private country path takes you down to the lively stream, which used to run flour mills. You can continue your walk here or bathe in one of the natural pools formed under the small cascades.

The cottage location is very interesting, being in Grazalema Natural Park for superb walking, within very easy reach of Grazalema village itself, Zahara lake, the pre-historic paintings in Pileta Cave, and last but not least, Ronda.

Ten minutes along the quiet valley road takes you to beautifully kept Grazalema village for shopping, various café-bars and restaurants and even a "home-made" spa and sauna.

Drive the same distance in the other direction and you’re at Lake Zahara (a reservoir really, but it doesn't feel like one). Here you will find an extensive picnic and bathing area, run by a local women's association, and Zahara village, where you can dine overlooking the lake.

Walking is one of the highlights of a holiday here. The limestone mountain landscapes of Grazalema, the cork oak forests, the deep valleys offer great hiking.

One walk in a spectacular and virtually traffic-free valley takes you from Benoaján village to Jimera, after which you can take a little train back again, and then go and visit nearby Pileta Cave, where a guided tour will show you astonishing rock formations and cave paintings dating back 20,000 years and more.

Those keen on more "recent" history can visit the ruins of the Roman town of Acinipo in the Ronda countryside and, of course, Ronda town, less than half an hour from the cottage.

John | September | 2016

A charming property situated in fabulous scenery. Pool is delightful and very clean and well maintained. Plenty of birds to view from the balcony. Would definitely recommend the area and Grazalema has all amenities required and plenty of lovely restaurants."

Shuna | April | 2016

This was our favourite place in our seven week holiday. The house, in its two parts, is quirky but very comfortable; the views are beyond amazing; so many different places to sit outdoors and listen to the waterfalls below and enjoy the mountains all around; it was too cool to use the pool, but it looked very inviting. When we arrived, we were given a warm welcome and masses of vegetables from their garden. The house is completely private and so quiet, except for the waterfalls and birds. Grazalema village is about 10 minutes' drive away and a delightful place for lunch or coffee - not over-touristy - where we were able to buy all we needed to self-cater so we felt like locals. In short, this was our idea of heaven, and if we ever get back to Spain, we would stay here again - but for longer. Highly recommended."

David | September | 2015

The house and surroundings were lovely and perfect for our needs. The only thing which we found difficult was spotting the entrance from the road, especially at night. Some indication of where you have to leave the road, such as a white post for instance, would have been very helpful."

This is the 2nd year in a row we have stayed at this fantastic villa. Equally as lovely as our first stay and we intend to go back again sometime. Beautiful location, quiet and all the facilities we needed to have a fantastic and relaxing break. No need to change anything about this lovely villa."

Patrick | April | 2015

The overall experience working with Rustical Travel was good. All the online information and booking process was clear and simple, and married up with our expectations upon arriving at the property and being met by the owners. Whilst not being able to speak English, the owners welcome was lovely - they seemed genuinely keen that we knew where everything was, how it worked and that we had a good time. The property was delightful, the location was breathtaking. The main living area could perhaps be a little more practical and less of a collectors paradise - lots and lots of old farming artefacts which is fine, but another sofa would be great. Everything worked, was clean and organised. The garden was fantastic with lovely pool and stunning views across the countryside. All in all wonderful, thank you. Looking forward to coming to this area again and perhaps trying out one of your properties elsewhere in Spain."

Katherine | July | 2014

We spent a wonderful week in July in this property. The location was idyllic, the pool was perfect and the house itself was exactly as advertised - an authentic Spanish home full of character and charm. Ideal for people looking for a taste of real Spain. The village of Grazalema was full of great places to eat and drink as well as some lovely local speciality shops, we had really no need to go anywhere else. all in all a perfect holiday. Rustical Travel were extremely efficient and helpful throughout the booking, highly recommended"

Lalita | April | 2014

We loved this place. It has old world charm with modern conveniences, including laundry. Great 360 views. We enjoyed breakfast and evening meals on the patio and a difficult choice of which way to face. Location in the middle of the Grizalama National Park is very nice. We enjoyed lunches in the villages we visited, hiked in the park, visited cheese factory and unique villages in the area. Highly recommend this place. Had difficulty getting in and out of driveway but that was probably due to my lack of experience driving on the mountain roads."
