Overview

Below Grazalema village, where a quiet road unwinds through the spreading valley, this farmhouse sits alone surrounded by rugged terrain.

In bygone days, the house was a dyer's cottage where the spun wool was given colour. Grazalema is well-known in Spain for its fine ponchos and blankets, especially prized by horse owners. Although restored for a quite different use, the property's traditional character remains evident.

The house really comes into its own in summer, when it maintains a refreshing coolness within its thick stone walls. Even when the sun is at its height, inside it is cool, still and relaxing.

Some of the furnishings have seen better days and the decoration is quite antiquated, but the villa accommodation represents a good and inexpensive self-catering option for anyone wanting a holiday home in the Grazalema countryside with good privacy and a swimming pool.

The high-ceilinged cottage has two rustically simple but spacious floors and on each floor you have a living room, two bedrooms and a bathroom.

We thought the villa best suited to six people on the whole, although the the kitchen, simple but adequate, is equipped for eight people and there’s a dining table large enough for all of you to sit round.

Outside, there's a brushwood-shaded patio and a swimming pool which can be gated for child-safety.

Generally speaking, the property is safe for children, who can explore its bouldered landscape planted with olive and fruit trees. A neighbouring sheep farm (just stroll over) is an opportunity for them to see the year’s new lambs.

The property is a short 2 km drive from Grazalema. A 15-minute walk along a nearby path, which has been in use since medieval times, is an alternative shortcut to the village: uphill there and downhill coming back. Remember to take a torch if you’re coming back at night.

Grazalema in the western province of Cadiz is one the most beautiful villages in Andalucia, enhanced by a secluded location within its own Natural Park, an area of outstanding beauty.

This well-kept village has real charm, a very relaxed place with a decent variety of restaurants and bars with terraces. It lies in pride of place at the heart of the protected parkland and represents an excellent choice for a relaxing or walking holiday.

Visiting Grazalema is always a very agreeable experience. They’re used to catering to visitors and you’ll soon find your favourite cafés or restaurant. The local cheese is a speciality and the asparagus soup is unique to the area.

As for the Natural Park: it's a marvel with a rich biodiversity. For us, this is one of the most interesting and satisfying natural areas of Andalucia. The green and rocky hills offer some of the best treks and walks we have discovered in Southern Spain, its gentle yet craggy slopes inviting ramblers of varying fitness to roam and explore.

There are also caves and natural caverns below the surface: you can delve into Grazalema’s secret subterranean limestone world of rivers and lakes at the Cueva del Gato (Cat Cave). If you intend to venture far in, though, it’s advisable to explore with a local guide.

For excursions by car, you have the opportunity to get to know the other Pueblos Blancos (white villages), and historic Ronda is just half an hour away.

A choice of four Andalucia airports within a radius of 2 hours represents a surprisingly good transport network for this unspoilt natural location.

Paul | July | 2022

We had a wonderful time during our stay at the villa. It was an excellent base to explore Grazalema Natural Park, however the very hot weather limited our ability to do so. The Villa is situated in an area of outstanding beauty overlooking the village, with penon grande in the backdrop. The village is a short walk up the ancient footpath, and the village itself has to be one of the loveliest villages in Spain. We were fortunate to be there during the bull run and the local people were patient with us given our limited Spanish. There was music in the square of the village in the evening and there was a lovely family atmosphere. If we were to change one thing about the villa, we would have liked some form of air conditioning, or fans as the unexpected very hot weather made it difficult to sleep at night, even though under normal summer temperatures, I believe the farm house would have been ok due to its thick walls etc. I would also like to thank Antonio for his communication with us during our stay, (answering any queries that we had). I would also like to thank the friendly farmers who tended the sheep next to the property, who were always courteous and polite. For anyone looking for a rural retreat, this place is special. Regards Paul"

Great stay, lovely location and very comfortable cottage with tons of charm! Only comment would be to know in advance that there is no oven, but other than that, lovely!"

We absolutely loved the wonderful rustic style and atmosphere of the property and the pool was just fantastic. We did have a couple of teeny niggles but we also had a fabulous holiday."

Very fair description and photos on website. Lovely location. We enjoyed walking up the hill to the village in May, although it might be too far for some, especially in the heat. The house was wonderfully clean but the mattresses and bed linen were well worn with some stains. Towels were markedly frayed. No Wi-Fi but we liked this. The arrival instructions were confusing, we waited in the petrol station for half an hour before being given very easy instructions telephone to find the property ourselves."

This property is lovely, the setting is excellent and watching the birds of prey circling high in the sky is a treat like no other. Of note, the pool is stunning and a real (cold) treat. The property is very rustic, no WIFI or mains gas here. We had some difficulties with hot water at times, which was intermittent but the host was relatively responsive and helped us out. Book this place if you want to relax in tranquil countryside and get away from it all. Be prepared for it to be somewhat old fashioned and with no aircon (it didn't matter for us but might for some). Overall, I would highly recommend Rustical Travel, they are great and I will definitely be looking to book with them again."

Just what the doctor ordered! A private, traditional villa, surrounded by nature, but in walking distance of the beautiful town of Grazalema. Watching the Griffin Vultures and eagles gliding on the thermals was the highlight!"

We had a fantastic holiday at the villa. Blue skies and very warm temperatures everyday. The villa was well equipped with almost everything you realistically need on holiday including thoughtful things like washing up liquid and salt and pepper. Paco, the handyman was lovely, although it would have been good to have been told the name of the villa rather than just its reference code, which would have saved some confusion when we arrived in Grazalema. As mentioned by a previous reviewer, some Ikea style fleeces in the bedrooms would have been good to supplement the sheets provided, our children found it cold at night. Equally, cushions for the sunbeds and the dining chairs would have made the holiday even more enjoyable. Would recommend the villa to anyone looking for a real chill out holiday. The walk up to the village along the ancient way only takes about 15-20 minutes (or 5 minutes by car). There are lots of lovely inexpensive food shops and restaurants/cafes selling local produce. Rhonda and Seville are definitely worth a visit, as is Zahara La Sierra. The mountain road has amazing views but go the longer way round if you don't like driving hairpin bends!"

Rustical Update

We have added the name of the property to the directions we send, and passed to the property manager the suggestions to have cushions for the sunbeds and chairs.

We had an excellent stay at RD13 - it was comfortable, in an excellent location, comfortable with an excellent swimming area. Probably one of the best and closest walks is the circular one that starts at the Camp Site just above the village and goes clockwise around the base of the Penon Grande, which is the large mountain that overlooks the town. The path heads up to the Puerto (Pass) de las Presillas, to the road at Pueto del Boya and then by a foot/cycle path that parallels the road back to the Campsite. This is 7 kms, involves a climb of 300 metres, is easy to follow with signposts at junctions and with information boards at a number of interesting features en route. This was also our morning run. The road surfaces are surprisingly good, even in the remote mountainous areas. Thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. Not sure what we will do next year but do you have any villas in between the Picos d'Europe and the north Spanish coast?"

An absolute gem of a property in a fantastic location. It was described as being rustic and I guess it is, but with oodles of charm and it certainly wasn't lacking in comfort. A lovely rural setting only 5 minutes drive (or a 20 minute walk) into the delightfully Spanish village of Grazalema. Thoroughly recommended."

We loved the house and had a wonderful time. A couple of minor things with the kitchen equipment: The orange squeezer mentioned in the listing is very difficult to use because the base container is not rigid enough to support the squeezer. For us freshly squeezed orange juice is one of the small joys of being in on holiday in Southern Europe so this was a minor but significant irritation. Someone kindly left an electric kettle for us in a carrier bag outside the front door a few days into our stay. (Not asked for, but perhaps they simply guessed that being British we would live on tea!) It would have been useful, but unfortunately it did not work from the start. We did also have a concern about the position of the kitchen bin: it is placed under the gas hob. When bending down to use it while cooking I was aware of how close my hair came to the naked gas flame on the hob. I have short hair and advancing baldness, so perhaps not a big risk for me, but the possibility of a horrible accident for someone with longer hair is not totally remote. Finally, as two families occasionally going our on ways, it would have been very useful to have had a second set of keys. I hope the observations above are helpful.
