Overview

Frigiliana is one of the favourite Axarquia villages, set back from the coast but within easy reach for days out at Nerja’s Mediterranean beaches. Nearby, on the hillside looking out to the sea, is this very successful self-catering holiday villa with good facilities, views and a refreshing swimming pool. Neighbouring houses are well distant elsewhere on the hill, so that privacy is virtually complete.

From Frigiliana village, a road weaves out into the countryside, passing a rural hotel and a restaurant with sea views, and in less than 10 minutes you arrive at the holiday property, with terraces and a pool area ranged below it.

There’s also a path below the villa, in a lush area of mango trees which takes 20 minutes to walk to the village. This is a rural track and walking to the village may take you longer depending on how fit you may be or how fast you walk. It is not a flat path where you may want to push a pram or go for regular walks carrying shopping bags, but it is great for a healthy trek into lovely Frigiliana village.

The villa is entered directly from private parking. The first thing we noticed was how well the villa is kept: we found presentation and cleanliness to be impeccable, a tribute to the local Spanish culture of pulchritude in the home.

When you’re in La Axarquia, the sunniest region in Spain, you tend to a good deal more time outside the house than in it, and here the property really comes into its own. First a shaded, furnished terrace is the ideal spot for meals while enjoying the views back to the white village or over the mangos to the Mediterranean. You’re quite high up here so the panorama is truly impressive.

From the furnished terrace, steps (inlaid with local stones that are a feature of the villa) lead down down to the pool area and a maritime green swimming pool. It’s maintained all year round, unless the weather is inclement: as lovers of the Axarquia know, there is every reason to hope for warm winter sunshine here. It’s a semi-tropical climate – as you might have guessed from the mango plantations – and Frigiliana is one only place in Europe with molasses honey production made from local sugarcane. Don't worry about the heat: the villa has air conditioning (which switches over to air heating in chilly months).

The pool area is semi-planted with a colourful flowerbed and there are sunloungers plus parasols for when the sun is too strong. Water cascades down a rock façade in a very agreeable effect when the filter pump is in operation. An outside WC is a handy extra.

Also on a lower level, on its own large terrace, is a brick-built barbecue and table with a sink and a small exterior fridge: the owners have been running the property as a holiday rental for some time now and have learned what people appreciate. Another short outside path leads to a look-out point that suggests the prow of a ship. The villa may be rural, but it does have a seaside feel, with the pebble mosaics and the Mediterranean so present in sight.

From the rear of the villa, the access track continues out to the delightful hamlet of Acebuchal, ensconced in a fold of the Sierra de Almijara and a lovely place to visit and explore walking. Nerja caves are always a big attraction (there’s a path leading there, but we wouldn’t recommend the walk at the height of summer as the heat can be strong), beaten only by the Mediterranean beaches. Those at Nerja 20 minutes away attract most visitors, while a further 20-minute drive will bring you to quieter, natural beaches such as Maro and Cantarriján.

The restaurant and rural hotel mentioned earlier are walking distance for meals out and Frigiliana, home to a significant expatriate community, has several good bars and restaurants to choose from, as well as providing all the shopping and other services you might require.

Granada and the Alhambra are little more than an hour's drive and Malaga Airport even less.

Kerry | October | 2023

A beautiful well equipped villa overlooking Frigiliana. Plenty of room for two couples to cook eat and enjoy the sunsets. You need to be fit to undertake the walk to the village but well rewarded along the route to stop and take in the views and nature. Highly recommended and would not hesitate to book this property again."

The Views from the Villa are Absolutely Stunning. The villa itself is lovely with one of the best equipped Kitchens we have experienced, and having the dining terrace straight from the Kitchen suited us very well as we enjoyed all of our meals outside from Breakfast to Dinner.. The Beautiful Pool and grounds are very well maintained by Sebastian - who came each morning before we were up to ensure all was well, and was so quiet that we never heard him - Our hosts Anna Marie and Sebastian were exceptional, - the wine and Mangos were very much appreciated -.The road down to the villa has now been greatly improved with concrete access from top to bottom, making access in a normal car easy. This villa is lovely and highly recommended by both of us."

We stayed here for 5 nights at the end of November. It was just perfect for us. Superb views, all the amenities you need including efficient heating by AC in the bedroom and a fabulous log burner with plenty of wood and kindling supplied. We used the villa as a walking base. We hiked La Maroma , El Cielo and El Fuente plus other long hikes. The new large shower downstairs was a dream to come back to. The bed upstairs is very comfy, the double downstairs is very firm if you prefer a firm bed. The owners were kind and non intrusive. We would love to stay here i the summer to make the most of the incredible outside area which can only be appreciated in person."

A beautiful house in a beautiful location with very friendly owners. The only downside was that it is a bit of a trek to Frigiliana with significant elevation changes and the taxis in town we’re almost non existent."

We have just enjoyed a wonderful week at this villa, and certainly hope to go back soon. The villa is located in the countryside near Frigiliana, which means you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views and complete quiet, have goats, horses, and oxen as neighbours, and also walk to town for delicious meals, sightseeing and interesting shopping. The location is a quick and easy drive from Malaga airport or train station, as well as Almeria airport. It is also good for several easy day trips, although just relaxing at the villa is very tempting!! The owners have thought of everything. We have stayed in many villas and apartments over the past 20 years, and this one was by far the best equipped! Dishes, pots and pans, utensils, filter coffee maker, toaster, kettle, new appliances in good working order, soaps and cleaning supplies, clothes pins, starting firewood, kindling, charcoal and matches, towels (inside and pool), pool loungers and umbrellas, even some basic food staples to get you started! The villa is spotless and the grounds are beautifully kept. There are charming custom features everywhere you look, inside and out - it is clearly a labour of love. The owners are friendly people who are most hospitable and thoughtful. They generously left a bowl of fruit on the table, including the most delicious (local) avocados we have ever eaten! We have rented with many agencies in the past, and would highly recommend Rustical Travel for their honesty in advertising, property quality, clarity of communication, and ease of doing business with. This is our second rental with them - there will certainly be more."

We had an wonderful welcome and an awesome holiday, it was an ideal location as you felt off the beaten track yet close to the beautiful town on Frigliana and the town of Nerja. The villa was well presented and had everything you would expect to cater for your needs. The grounds were much larger that expected for a one bed villa and each level offered different views. Your really do not feel that you need to leave the villa. We shall return very soon we hope"

This villa is a true gem! Located just a short drive from Frigiliana with beautiful restaurants hidden down cobbled side street, the villa is remote, not overlooked, and so peaceful! Ana & Sebastian are so welcoming - homemade pear jam and fruits on arrival just added to the home from home feel. The villa has absolutely everything you could possibly need, it has a real Spanish rustic charm, small and intimate, and all built by the owner himself! The pool is very refreshing and as you are in the mountains the views are to die for... great for a couple looking for a romantic getaway & also perfect for those with a baby in tow. (I wouldn't advise small toddlers due to the steep steps located all around the property). A smooth faultless service provided by Rustical Travel with plenty of literature prior to arrival, containing all the information we could possibly need about the villa and surrounding area only added to our already perfect holiday.... Don't miss out - book this villa!"

The situation and views were amazing. All the directions and arrangements were perfect. Our hosts were just lovely people. The villa was in a prime position and was extremely well appointed and maintained and clean. The outside terraces were amazing with lots of possibilities for eating outside. The weather at this time of year was lovely - most days it got warm in the daytime and so walking in tee shirts was possible on a couple of days. It was very cold at night but there was heating in the bedroom. We did need to start the wood-burning stove early in the evening and so that we were warm enough to sit inside and actually to help we sometimes put the heating on in the bedroom with the door open! At that time of year we really could have done with heating in the main part of the house. Also a nice thick duvet or a few more blankets would have meant we would have not put the heating on in the bedroom at night. Amazingly we even had a very quick dip in the pool one day when we had walked over to Frigiliana. Frigiliana is lovely and everybody so friendly. Enough English spoken that you could find things out but enough non-English speaking people to make me practice my Spanish. Lovely walk and lots to drive to close by and of course loads to explore in the Andalucían area. Some days we just lazed around the villa it was so beautiful there. We had a wonderful time."

We have stayed in several villas in this area over the years and they have all been great but none have been better than this absolute gem! For a 2 person rental you get so much for you money. It really is stunning in every way. There was nothing at all that we could mark down. ( this villa was lovingly built by the owners as you will see immediately you enter it) When you meet the owners Sebastian and Ana Maria you will love them. We couldn't have wished for a more friendly welcome along with gifts of fruit and smashing home made jams! The comments book in the villa was full of entries made by very happy guests. There wasn't a single negative one and I read them all! It's an absolute certainty that we will return to this our very favourite villa found so far! Thank you so much Ana Maria and Sebastian for all your kindness and the rental of your beautiful home. Our holiday was fantastic!"

AX19 is truly an exceptional villa. Ana Maria & Sebastian the owners have put so much effort not only in making the villa comfortable providing all the comforts of home but put some much effort into creating a natural and beautiful setting to enjoy the views and rustic setting. The pool area , bar b q area and other areas all have their own distinctive qualities and have been constructed with care and flair to the highest standard. I have stayed in many lovely holiday homes but nowhere else has the love and thought that has gone into this lovely Villa shone through.
