Overview

This fine old house, and the lower reaches of Bubion where it sits, breathe history. It was built and inhabited by Moors over 500 years ago, predating much of the rest of the whitewashed village and its 16th century church.

Rather more comfortable these days, it serves very well as a traditional holiday home to provide quality accommodation in the most tranquil and pleasant quarter of the village.

The main road runs through the top of the village. Here, at its foot, cars can reach but go no further. You can normally park (there's no charge) by the church with its very quiet square, 50 metres away from the house. The church and square have an enchanting simplicity. There is a bar with chairs and tables to sit out in the calm plaza, and a footpath that meanders down to neighbouring Pampaneira village.

Notwithstanding its antiquity, the house is well furnished and well equipped for holiday stays. Along with many original features, you’ll find a great deal of newer handcrafts and attractive additions.

As in many a house built on the slopes of the Alpujarra mountainside, accommodation is distributed between different levels.

The main floor is all open plan, with kitchen, dining and living areas forming a unified space. It opens to a private terrace with an uninterrupted view down the valley and across to the Mediterranean Sea: spectacular!

Downstairs is a double-bedded room, tasteful and cosy with whitewashed stone walls. A hallway leads to a complete bathroom tiled beautifully in Arabic style.

Upstairs, the large roof terrace provides an excellent opportunity for sunbathing on loungers, or admiring the remarkable views of the Poqueira Gorge and Sierra Nevada mountains.

Bubion is a tranquil and pretty village, characterised by popular traditional architecture. It enjoys a superb mountain location within the Poqueira Gorge, with views of the distant Mediterranean and up to the formidable summits of Sierra Nevada over 3,000 metres high, snow-capped for most of the year.

This is an excellent location to disconnect from rushed city lives, and ideal also for those seeking active holidays, with some of the best trekking options in Europe and a unique Mediterranean mountainous landscape.

Holidaymakers who come in summer months and fancy swims have different options. From June to September guests staying here are invited to make free use of the swimming pool at holiday property AP17 about ten minutes drive away. In July and August, a campsite 3 km away has a lawned pool that opens to the general public, and the Mediterranean Sea is an hour's drive.

Although it is the natural splendour that draws people to this location, for many people a week's holiday here is incomplete without a visit to the regional city of Granada, where the Alhambra is one of the world's top heritage sites.

John | September | 2016

This was a charming little place in Bubion and an ideal place to explore the region from. The two single beds were very hard and would have benefited from having mattress toppers to make them more comfortable. The owner was very helpful and called a couple of times to make sure we were ok. The cleaner who met us when we arrived was also very helpful. Overall we really enjoyed our stay in this property"

We really enjoyed our visit to Bubion and the cottage we stayed in suited us perfectly. It was comfortable, well equipped and in a fantastic location and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone else. The Alpujarras are wonderful and Bubion, being the middle one of the three villages, was a brilliant base for walking and exploring the whole area. We had a couple of minor issues during our stay - the Wifi was rather erratic and even though the router was replaced while we were there it was still a bit unreliable. We were also a bit disappointed not to be able to use the promised swimming pool for the first few days of our stay (as the property owner was away) but we very much enjoyed it for the last couple of days. He did offer to pay for us to use the local campsite swimming pool which we did for two days, but it wasn't as enjoyable as having a more private pool in a much nicer location. All in all it was a fantastic holiday though and I'd love to go back one day!

Charles | July | 2014

My husband & I stayed in Bubion for 2 weeks in July. The house was great, had everything we needed and was in a fabulous location overlooking the valley. The village has only a small supermarket & bread shop but there are a number of bars/restaurants. We liked the fact Bubion is less touristy than other villages nearby. We went hillwalking most days. There are a number of fairly well signposted walks in this area, some very challenging. We either ate out in the afternoon or on the covered terrace with lovely views over the gorge. Sometimes we sunbathed on the roof terrace in the late afternoon before going out in the evening. We would recommend visiting Capileira and Pampaneira for souvenirs and for the variety of restaurants. The streets in Bubion are very steep and I would not recommend this area for a stay for people with poor mobility."
