Overview

For holidaymakers, especially hikers come to discover Liébana, this villa represents the opportunity to self-cater in style and comfort.

The Spanish owners, keen walkers themselves, originally created this Cantabria mountain retreat for themselves and it has the feel and the qualities of a real home. In our experience, this can make the difference between acceptable holiday accommodation and a place you really appreciate and enjoy staying in.

The house inside is welcoming, well-finished and decorated in keeping with its alpine rural character.

The house's main feature has to be the huge picture window which rises from floor to ceiling: not only does it allow natural light to illuminate the entire open-plan living and dining area, but it gives a stupendous view of the valley and forested mountains beyond the private garden. This sight makes you feel very much part of the natural world of the Liebana that you will be exploring.

The accommodation is well arranged, and the good-sized living area has comfortable sofas. The kitchen, dining area and a shower room complete the main floor, which ends at the picture window and a door out to the main garden. The shower room is for the use of any guests sleeping in the gallery above the living room.

Downstairs the Master double room has its own door out to a small garden with barbecue. This connects via steps with the main garden area. There is simple pub garden-style wooden furniture and a terrific view.

The house enjoys some outdoor space in the sleepy but inhabited hamlet against its mountain backdrop. There are no services in this little village (from 2017 there is a new B&B in a house next to the parking space at AC16 which may now offer breakfasts and simple food to guests staying here, please aks), but it’s not far at all – 4 km to be precise – to Ojedo, where there's a large supermarket. And a little closer, in Tama, you can eat out very well and find out all about the Picos de Europa and hiking routes at the excellent Visitors Centre. Before you travel, Rustical Travel will also send you a detailed Liebana Guide with holiday ideas and tips for walks and where to eat out.

Potes, the main market town and capital of the Liebana region, is only 5 kms away.

Potes is the hiking hub for the Liebana, a lively place with plenty of shops, restaurants, café-bars with WiFi and internet cafés. The beef at a local butchers’ is excellent and there are at least three good restaurants we can recommend. You can buy good local honey, boleto mushrooms (in season) and orujo, a fiery digestif to round off a hearty meal.

Cheese lovers will have a field day, with the nearby village of Tama being famous for its production of cave-cured, potent, crumbly cheeses. The Tama Cheese Festival is held on the 3rd weekend of July. The natural cider that complements it so well is usuallly associated with neighbouring Asturias but it's an important cottage industry in Cantabria, too, and you will find it served widely at restaurants and taverns.

A car is pretty much essential here to discover the valleys and mountains and access the best walking trails. A short drive wll bring you to Pendes and its 1,000 year-old chestnut forest. With their massive girths, these are the ancients of the tree world. The walks around here are a delight. You may see wild orchids, alpine newts and the European Griffon or smaller Egyptian vulture.

In the Liebana there is no end of things to do and see. In 35 minutes you can be at Fuente Dé to take the cable car high up into the mountains, or at the coast, where we very much like San Vicente Barquera, a fishing village with a huge backdrop of snowy mountains.

A little further on is Oyambre, a coastal Natural Park whose beaches are banked by sand dunes and surrounded by nature. For a wider choice, our tip is to head west a short distance to Asturias beaches.

The drive from the Santander ferry or airport is a straightforward 1 hour 25 minutes and there’s room to park two cars outside the house.

This house is very characterful and comfortable. It has lovely views from the terrace area. The rooms are spacious with many personal touches. The only downside for us was the weather. It rained for most of the time but there's not much anyone can do about that! Rustical travel provided a very good service and the information packs and instructions were excellent."

Had a great week at the villa. Incredibly peaceful and scenic location. The views from the balcony and garden were amazing. The property itself was everything we wanted we loved the bedrooms being downstairs. The shower was excellent. Directions to the property were absolutely spot on. Beautiful drive to the property. The locals were also very friendly. We would love to go back! Thankyou to all the staff at rustical, this was the first time we have used you and found you all very professional. Thankyou"

We had a lovely holiday at the cottage in Armano. The cottage is well-appointed and comfortable. The views are amazing, and we were impressed by the wildlife: griffon vultures circling overhead and pallid swifts screaming around the village. We would certainly consider staying here again if we were visiting the area again. Potes is only a short drive away, and there was plenty of information in the cottage, in our own books and the literature we got from the Tourist Information Office to provide us with lots of interesting walks. The local guides and other information provided by Rustica were indispensable. Rustica was really helpful in the planning for the holiday. A few minor points. The kitchen does not have an oven, but it does have a microwave. The garden is really very small and the tar seeping from the bench dissuaded us from sitting at it. The sun-loungers were useful, and we had many meals at the table outside the sitting room. The travel details provided by Rustica were helpful. However, the A8-E70 motorway now goes all the way from Bilbao to St Vincente, so there is no need to use the motorway into Santander. The final few lines of the travel details were incorrect. You sent us this information: "Drive slowly through Tama until you see on your right a signposted small road to Viñon / CA-884. Drive up this road. After approx. 3 km, take the turning to your left which will take you to the hamlet of Armaño." Better instructions would be: "Drive slowly though Tama until you see on your right a small signposted road to Viñon/CA-883. Take this turning, cross over the bridge; the road bends to the right. After about 200m take the turning to your left which will take you to the hamlet of Armaño.""

Rustical Update

We have now updated our directions to the villa.

Dear Rustical Travel, It has taken me a while to write but I wanted to let you know that I had a tremendous time in the Picos de Europa. The holiday home was absolutely perfect and the surrounding area was marvelous. In particular, I would like to thank Anna (I believe that is her name) at your office in Barcelona (?). When I could not locate AC16, Anna guided me to the house (by way of mobile phone) and arranged for friends of the house care-taker to meet me there. She really was exceptional as I'm not sure I would have located the house without her help! Muchas Gracias! I will definitely use Rustical Travel again. : ) All the best, Andrew"

Beautiful old house with a modern twist. Very spacious and well equipped although we couldn't find the kettle!. Enjoyed the view from the large window and sitting on the balcony watching the birds. Well situated for excursions in all directions."

Rustical Update

We have contacted the property manager and she has informed us that the kettle was in the kitchen, inside one of the cupboards.

We spent two weeks at this lovely property, enjoying the peaceful environment and beautiful surroundings. The cottage is lovely. It being 'upside down' and having garden access from both upstairs and downstairs made it extra special. It was clean, well equipped and very very cosy. The only downside is that the kitchen does not have an oven, just a hob and microwave. The hamlet is central enough so nothing is too long a drive away, Potes has everything you need, from supermarkets, butchers, restaurants, a Monday market and souvenir shops. It even has a vet, which was comforting as we had our dog with us. Rustical travel's directions to the property and information about the area were spot on."

Rustical Update

There is oven at the property but it was taken to be repaired at the time of this booking and replaced in early October 2015.

Overall the property details were accurate and we had a lovely holiday, just a couple of things, it was stated that there was garden furniture but there wasn't any other than a wooden bench, also there was no instructions for any electrical appliances in English or where we should leave the key on departure."

Rustical Update

The owner has added two new sunloungers (see photos) and we've offered to help the owner with translation of a housebook.

Emma | August | 2014

We had the most wonderful time in the Picos! The area and the house were exactly as described in the photos, the 'blurb' and by you when we spoke on the phone. The house was fabulous, especially the main living area, which felt like a 'home'. A couple of points: we found the mattress on the main bed pretty hard, and the bed itself felt more like a camp bed or pull out bed than a permanent one. Also the bedding was quite basic, but towels good. The kitchen and house were generally well equipped and everything (eg.coffee machine, microwave) easy to find and use. The policy of leaving the house 'bare' (no soap etc) is boring if you've flown in on a Sunday, but I do understand it - actually, there was washing up liquid and a dishwasher tablet, so we were tided over! We met the cleaning ladies who were lovely, and the house was immaculate. There was a dog which barked all one night - I gather this is an issue in rural Spain - we felt so sorry for the animal. l Your guides to beaches and the Liebana were hugely helpful for us first-timers. The booking process - your web-site, and being able to chat to you on the phone - was brilliant. We would definitely go back to that part of Spain, and would certainly use you again to advise and select a house to rent, and recommend you to friends. Thank you so much - we had a fabulous time and are completely in love with Potes and the Picos. PS. We then spent a week with Spanish friends in their house near Comillas - a very good counterpoint!"

Rustical Update

Although they aren't strictly included, the owner has agreed to provide more household cleaning supplies.

I just wanted to let you know that we had a fantastic holiday last week. The accommodation was great, please let Begona know that we loved her beautiful holiday retreat. The information package that you sent was so so helpful, the driving instructions were flawless and the information about the walks, beaches etc was also extremely helpful. You made the whole process of booking our holiday very easy and we will most certainly be planning our holiday with you again next year. I will also be recommending Rustic Travel to all my friends! Thank you so much again."

I have been meaning to write thanking you for our holiday but work has got in the way! Firstly I would like to thank all at Rustical Travel for a great service and have been recommending you to friends. We thought Cantabria was the best place we have ever visited in Europe, and we have been to a few! The property we rented was great and in a perfect location even if the drive up to it was a bit tight. As I say we had a great time but I would like to make a couple of small observations on the property that I believe would improve it for future guests. There are no outside seats except for a big bench and table which I think was made up of old sleepers because on sunny days it was seeping tar and so could not be used. A couple of foldaway deckchairs would have been great. In addition their is no clothes line and so wet towels and tea towels had to be hung over the balcony which was ok but when it got windy I had to retrieve them from next door! As I say minor inconveniences but overall a great holiday in a beautiful location. I am sure you will be hearing from us again."

Very beautiful and comfortable and accurately described on your website. One thing that we found a bit irritating: the owners had left three dishwashing tablets and two bin liners. Did they really think that was sufficient for a whole week? We bought a box of dishwasher tablets and left them for others to use. We didn’t buy any extra bin liners but used supermarket plastic bags instead (too small really). I feel that the property owners could have been more generous."

Although they aren't strictly included, the owner is going to provide more household cleaning supplies.
