Overview

A completely independent country property, this is an ideal place from which to explore and discover the joys of being in Asturias. We’ll come to the facilities in a moment, but first let’s just take a look at the view……

That’s the Natural Park of Ponga, contiguous with the Picos de Europa, offering not one but two amazingly spectacular driving routes that go as far as the Forest of Piloño, one of the best preserved forests of Europe. Ponga is one of the only areas in where the brown bear, with its strong preference for a forested habitat, still lives as Asturias’ most respected (and protected) denizen.

The cottage is surrounded by private meadows, backing onto a quiet country lane and with a private drive to the front. Children can run and play in the meadows to their hearts’ content. The horses one occasionally sees belong to the same vast estate (over 600 acres) as the house, and horseriding is one of the several activities that can be arranged with the property manager, who is on hand during your stay.

Here you are in the folds of the Sierra del Sueve, the high Natural Park that rises up close to the Asturias coast and presents you with some great hiking opportunities. You can walk from the house itself to the Alto de Llama (Llama Pass) in 20 minutes and continue from there to Espinares with views of the sea.

Entrance is from a shaded porch, furnished for sitting outside and enjoying the natural peacefulness of this privileged location. The house is comfortable for four people, with a homely living room and smallish but properly equipped kitchen, which extends into the annexe that you see in the pictures. Also here is one of the bedrooms.

The other bedroom is upstairs and reached by a spiral staircase. It has a wooden floor and nice antique twin beds. The landing continues to the lovely covered gallery terrace that is such a typical feature of cottages in Asturias. The views are indescribably beautiful.

There are lots of other good reasons for choosing this cottage. It’s unusual in having a property manager with an office in nearby Sevares village. Sevares is 5 mins by car but an even nicer walk (15 mins) along a path that goes through the woods. It has a supermarket, bakery, restaurants that offer a well-priced set meal of the day and the manager’s office, where you can make use of  WiFi internet and arrange activities. Another very good grilled meats restaurant is just up the road and food in Asturias is one of the real highlights. Vegetarians are not that well comprehended in Asturias: but they will certainly appreciate the local specialities of cider and cheese.

According to individual interests, these range from golf (reduced rates for our clients) at an excellent local golf course, canoeing on the River Sella (suitable for children from 7 years), surfing (also for children and you can hire the surfboards at the beach), horseriding, fishing in River Piloña (a licence is required, so please ask us well in advance if you plan to fish), and simply fantastic walks (guided or self-guided) in Sierra de Sueve, Ponga and Picos de Europa.

Asturias beaches are another huge attraction. You can even look forward to the drive: a country road (avoiding the main highway) links the local town of Infiesto with beaches in 20 minutes. Drive further, another 20 minutes, and the sandy beach options expand at Ribadesella to include Playa de Vega (for surfboard hire) and Bueyo de Mar, where a great beach restaurant (book in advance!) offers freshly caught fish and seafood.

Other Atlantic highlights include the pretty fishing village of Tazones, Lastres (ask us for recommendations for seafood restaurants here!) with its Jurassic Museum, dinosaur footprints, lighthouses and breathtaking cliffs along an unspoilt coastline.

Driving around this charming area, called Piloña, is more like old-fashioned leisurely motoring: country lanes, few cars, lovely landscapes. Our favourites are Ponga, the Desfiladero de los Beyos, Cangas for the Picos de Europa, historic Covadonga, tomb of King Pelayo and gateway to high glacial lakes.

Espinaredo is one of Spain’s most famous village beauties and little places like Miyares (just up the road) are a delight. This is one of the best spots for mushroom-hunting in autumn.

All in all, an exciting combination of green mountains, idyllic countryside, good facilities, interesting activities, beach and coastal attractions and some very good gastronomic options.

Excellent service from Carlos and co at Rustical Travel. The office managment team in Sevares were also very friendly. The cottage is in a beautiful, peaceful location with excellent views (after the morning cloud had lifted) and has lots of parking space. It has two good-sized bedrooms - one upstairs with a balcony/eating area and one downstairs. The spiral staircase could be a bit tricky for very small children. The lounge/dining area is big enough for 4 people and while the kitchen is a little bit cramped it's fine for a holiday stay. The downstairs rooms are a little bit dark due to the small windows, but I suspect it would be quite cosy in the winter with a log fire - we visited in the summer and kept the top of the stable-style front door open. It's an excellent base from which to explore the north/western side of the Picos and the Ponga Natural Park. The coastal areas are a 35-40 minute drive away. We would happily stay there again!"

This was one of the best family holidays we have ever had. The villa was perfect for a family of 4 (2 children, 9 and 6 years old) with space to play in the garden for the children and the balcony for the two of us to escape to with a glass of wine or cider to view the amazing scenery. Well equipped villa with comfy bedrooms, maybe slightly small kitchen, but that's the tiniest complaint. The walk to the town in Savares was gorgeous and the river was ideal for the kids to play and swim in. As a keen nature lover the meadow outside the garden was gorgeous, with over 30 species of butterflies and wonderful Black kites and red-backed Shrikes seen every day. A walk to the end of the meadow in the evening was so peaceful, with great views of the Picos de Europa in the distance. Savares ahd a small shop and with this and the supermarket in Arriondas we had everything we needed. The location was perfect, ideal for local walks, but only 30 mins drive to a range of fantastic small and beautiful beaches (don't go on a weekend in July and August - packed!). The distance to the Picos de Europa was not too far, 2 h drive to Fuente De and we drove all round the Natural park via Riano and Puerto de San Glorio, enjoying the fantastic scenery, and for me, amazing butterflies - Apollo, Gavarnie Blue and Chapmans Ringlet are key target species for anyone interested in butterflies, all seen at either Fuente De or Puerto de San Glorio. Overall this was the perfect holiday, ideal accommodation, ideal location, simply beautiful scenery and loads to do for all the family. add on the great local cider and wine and fabulous cheeses and we were all very happy indeed! Didn't want to leave! Feel free to use this for advertising, Thank you for a lovely holiday. "

The service from Rustical Travel was first class, the actual house was very nice and contained everything needed for a good stay, the views from the house across the meadow towards the mountains was fabulous. Plenty of interesting places to visit that were fairly close by. Violetta was also very helpful and her office was only 10 minutes drive away in Sevares. It is just a pity I had to leave early due to my dog who had travelled with me to Spain several times before would you believe became home sick and would not eat. I guess its her age as she is now 10, but I thoroughly enjoyed the short time we had there."

Excellent cottage in almost every respect. Local management contact in Sevares was excellent and helpful. Two observations: We had a daily visitor in the cottage of what we hope was a field mouse so had to be very careful about leaving any food out. The Lelandii Hedge around the property is growing quite high and was beginning to obscure the mountains from view at ground level. This needs pruning back. With thanks, James and Diana"

Rustical Update

In January 2016 the hedges were pruned back. This property undergoes a proffesional rodent controls by a local company. A mouse can come inside the house but it shouldn´t be a persistent problem.

We are also informed in January 2016 that the property has now a new sofa.

Very postive. It was easy to find as the directions were accurate. The property was well-presented, clean and comfortable. It was a beatiful property with wonderful views. The property manager and colleagues were very helpful. We had a very enjoyable holiday using the property as a base to expore the region. It would have been useful to have a book or leaflets inside the property with information about facilities in the area and local visistor attractions (in english) but we managed and the manager was veryhelpful."

We currently provide a local information file to clients coming to this holiday home. We also hope to add more updated information for 2015; this local guide is sent via email to clients at least 4 weeks before their holiday commences.

I just wanted to write to say thank you for helping us organise a fantastic trip to Asturias. We have just got back from our trip, full of happy memories of days spent at the beach, or in the mountains. We found your 'top 10 beaches in Asturias' particularly helpful. Thank you once again!"

Thanks again for this. AT20 is a lovely cottage, the setting and views are very beautiful, and Violetta and her colleagues have been helpful, for example in arranging horse riding this morning. We shall recommend it to our friends. We have enjoyed following your suggestions in the local area guide. I have just one correction, the Alto de la Llama walk to the Majada de Espineres is on the AS259 rather than AS260 which goes from Arriondas to Colunga."
