Overview

There are very different aspects to the Galician coastline, the soft lines and sandy beaches of the southern rias baixas contrasting enticingly with the wild, virgin Costa da Morte in the north. From here you can explore them both.

We are pleased to be able to offer this accommodation for four people in an enviable location, just 1 km from where the river opens to the sea at Muros, offering a typical Galicia ria beach, attractive and unspoilt. Add Santiago de Compostela just half an hour away and you have an extremely interesting option.

The small terrace and back garden, utterly private, are quite irresistible. The garden with its lawn, trees, flowers and complete privacy is lovely while the furnished terrace, we thought, is the property’s best spot. Beyond the garden you are surrounded by woods and unspoilt nature.

Last time we visited in summer 2015, the garden looked gorgeous with semi wild vegetation and flowers. There was a very pleasant smell of flowers and vegetation in mild to warm weather.

There's a barbecue patio at the front of the house, too, decorated by flowering plants and climbers. This is a great spot to enjoy local charcoal-grilled fish or meat without having to leave home.

There's a beach just 15 minutes' walk away.

The stone-built cottage is an unpretentious affair. The interior is neat and unadorned, with its own distinct charm and all you need for a very pleasant holiday stay.

The kitchen is the focal point of the house. It’s modern in a country style and has immediate access to the gardens.

The house's living room is divided by a stone arch between a warmer area with a fireplace for winter fires, and a fresher, more summery sitting area, with access to the terrace and garden. There's simple interior decoration and an eclectic choice of furniture places together comfortable sofas, a rocking chair and 1970s-style armless chairs.

The cottage is set back from the street and you normally park 40 metres away. It's not a private parking spot so if someone else in the village is parked there, you may have to walk 2 or 3 minutes to the property.

Although the owner told us that many people are content to simply enjoy the immediate surroundings, we do urge you to venture out to make the most of what for us is a very exciting area, starting with the local coast.

The house belongs to Porto de Son and the Muros e Noia estuary, an area of great potential for tourism and nevertheless still quiet and undeveloped. Being within the estuary mouth, the beaches near the cottage are less exposed and their waters warmer and gentler than many on the coast, where tidal undertow can make swimming unsafe. Ornanda beach, 1 km away, is the closest. It is very safe and has beach facilities. It tends to be pretty popular in the summer, although that's hardly a problem in an area where beaches abound, including naturist options at Castro Baroña and La Furna.

For history in a lively setting, you have one of of northern Spain's fabulous treasures just half an hour from the cottage: Santiago de Compostela's old town with the cathedral, museums and squares is a delight to wander.

Also recommended is a visit to the coastal hilltop ruins of Castro de Baroña, the Iron Age fortified village once inhabited by the Celts. You can see this in one of the photos. It's 20 minutes from the holiday cottage, just south of Porto do Son.

And don't miss the protected beach area of the Corrubedo Natural Park, just 30 minutes from the property. Its transient dunes and beaches of finest sand are a natural marvel. Kept virtually free of human exploitation, this is one of the most important and valuable ecological enclaves of the Galician coast.

Finally, we come to the Costa da Morte to the north. It’s a good hour from the house but powerfully impressive. Here, the sea shows its ferocious aspect on a coast battered by the Atlantic. It's Galicia at its most savage and mystic. Along this fearsome rocky coast which bears the name of death, hundreds of sailors have lost their lives over the centuries. Here it is nature, not man, that calls the tune.

Inez | July | 2016

Lovely holidayhome in a very small village. Near beautiful beaches and Santiago de Compostella is quite nearby, app. half an hour by car. The house is located beautifully and probably its best feature is that it is very quiet (while everything you need is nearby); we slept very well during our stay. And everything was very well organized by Rustical Travel."

Deirdre | July | 2016

Hi, we absolutely loved the property, it's traditional charm, quietness, natural beauty surrounding it and nearby beaches. The house was well supplied and comfortable too. What would enhance a visitor staying would be some better and more pillows available for the beds, and also the shower set-up in the bathroom as it soaked the room on use. A new kitchen cloth and a roll of kitchen paper/Towel would have been useful to be supplied as shops are not so close."

Rustical Update

The shower set up can be tricky. From now on the property manager will give indications on how to use the shower to prevent the water from coming out.

This was a very nice holiday home for a week . It is in a rural location but close to a nice beach. The house was comfortable with a nice rear garden but could have done with better cooking equipment and utensils . Noia is an interesting town and Santiago is a relatively short distance away with a good road . If you want to get away from the crowds and are happy to mix with local Spanish people then this is a good place to go. Other than in Santiago we only met one other British family. The local food is really nice if you like tapas and seafood and fish. We use the local campsite restaurant which was basic but had good food and local wine."

Lovely, clean and welcoming house in such a beautiful setting. We were very comfortable and enjoyed the bottle of local wine that Luz left in the fridge for us. Having to wait two hours for our hire car made it a very long wait for Luz but fortunately we were able to text her using Google translate and we were welcomed with open arms! Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and enjoyed walking locally in the countryside as well as being able to walk to the nearest beach (very pretty and lovely soft sand) which was a bonus. Explored much of the area by car and found the roads really good and easy to use. Visited friends in Leiro, our main reason for choosing Galicia and so pleased we did. It made for a wonderful holiday in "real" Spain having previously only ever been to the more touristy areas of Southern Spain. Definitely look forward to returning to Galicia."

We had a wonderful time in Galicia and would like to thank you for your excellent customer service before the trip. Phil was very impressed when he phoned you; it was also refreshing that you answered the phone, so unlike most companies where you’re held in a queue. It was helpful being able to reserve our property for 24 hours in order to arrange flights. The property itself exceeded our expectations and was quite delightful."

Hans | July | 2014

We really enjoyed the stay in the stonehouse cottage! Nicely decorated, plenty of space, everything available for your holiday. Beautiful place to be, very quiet, wonderful small garden with many flowers and the tranquility of the sound of water of the small river downwards. The bedrooms are good, although we are used to much softer mattresses. Great area, lovely beaches and small towns and pretty close to Campostella."

Valerie | July | 2014

This is a lovely cottage - much larger than it appears in the pictures. We loved the garden and everything was very comfortable and worked well. The only difficulty was the parking space which, as described is a short walk from the house - but the locals all seem to use it so you have to park further away ........... We would recommend this place for a quiet retreat with good facilities and plenty of local beaches."
