Overview

Hidden away in green, restful forest, just a few minutes inland from the coast and pretty Atlantic beaches, this three-bedroomed restored mill offers self-catering in a very relaxing, natural setting.

For a holiday off the beaten track, yet close to Spain’s dramatic northern coastline of cliffs and beaches, it’s an truly exciting choice.

The river mill is set in the heart of the famed Rias Altas and handy for Galicia beaches at Cariño and the tremendous cliffs that round the northern coast. Wild swimming is also possible in the river than runs past the cottage.

The capable Galicians look after their visitors well and a local family have put together this very acceptable, well fitted-out hideaway in the wooded countryside, 15 mins from full services in the pleasant coastal town of Ortigueira.

Ortigueira is famed for its annual international Celtic festival, when bands and singers from all over the world gather together with fiddle, pipe and drum.

Although it may feel like camping out in the woods, there’s no sense of roughing it here. The accommodation is comfortable and agreeable, full of lovely touches. After a day at the coast or tramping the paths through the woods, you can eat out on the outdoor terrace, or if it’s a chilly time of year, around the log fire.

The mill cottage has a simple kitchen and a cosy living room with a woodstove. Firewood and hot water are plentiful and not charged.

In addition to the three bedrooms there is a smaller twin-bedded room without a bathroom that offers extra sleeping room. This room is perhaps best suited to children, as guests here need to share bathroom facilities with one of the two main bedrooms.

Heating, if required, is provided by no fewer than three woodburning stoves (firewood is supplied and included) and supplemented by a wall panel heater.

The cottage has good privacy, with one other neighbouring mill property some 60 metres distant, where it is obscured by the forest and its rambling vegetation. A bridge over the river takes you to semi-wild gardens planted with azaleas, rhododendrons and hortensia: an area private to the two mills only.

In our visit in May 2015 we were impressed on how mature the gardens looked since our previous visit The number of botanic specimens had also kept growing.

The mill cottage is reached down a short track from private parking. There is a modest hamlet nearby, wild swimming possible in the river, also stables to hire horses and a birdwatching observatory.

Here you are close to the Ortigueira estuary and Galicia beaches and the tremendous cliffs that round the coast. The coast is breathtaking and some of its sandy beaches lie at the foot of the highest cliffs on the European continent.

For swims, we recommend Fornos beach at the prettily named Cariño (“fondness” or “darling”). There are river swims, too, at a practically private spot less than 10 minutes walk from the cottage, following the river path.

At the FEVE light railway station 500 metres away, a local train occasionally stops to pick up passengers and continues all the way to Ferrol.

Some excellent restaurants serving fresh seafood and fish are 15 to 20 minutes away in Espasante and Cedeira.

My wife and I enjoyed our stay in the mill cottage immensely. It was even better than we had hoped; was well maintained and lovingly prepared for our arrival. The level of detail to meet the needs of guests was impressive. Combined with your company's support, we feel our experience was excellent and will recommend your company to friends and family.

This is a wonderful holiday cottage, full of character and beautifully restored. It is ideal for a family, whilst only 15mins drive to the town of Ortigueira and all its great beaches, you feel as if you are in the middle of nowhere which made for a very relaxing week."

The cottage was absolutely beautiful and just what we were looking for. Plenty of space, privacy and well equipped. It was made that bit more special by two books on the local area self-published by the owner. Hard not to enjoy yourself with an enthusiastic guide."

We love AG10(1) a couple of years ago so returned to find we has the even more luxurious AG10 (2)! Absolutely fabulous and perfect for a get away from it all holiday. We even saw a pine martin and bullfinch in the garden! We will be back. Blancas walk guide took us on some lovely walks and the location is within walking distance of the Feve which is great for exploring. Hopefully we will be back. Thanks"

Tom | May | 2014

Hi, thanks for our stay in Galicia, we had a wonderful time. Our only other comment is that the translations of directions to local amenities and shops into English are not very clear, for instance it was very difficut to find the swimming hole because the English directions did not explain, go down to the main ROAD, then turn right... and the directions to the local butcher in the nearest town were also very unclear. But the cottage is beautiful and we had a terrific stay."
