Overview

Your home is an ecologically restored river mill right at the northern tip of Spain, a place where you might imagine seeing the Galician duendes, wood spirits, near the clear-running River Mera. Wild swimming is possible in the river 10 minutes downstream and some great beaches are 20 minutes away.

For all your shopping and other requirements, coastal Ortigueira is 15 mins drive. Ortigueira is a pleasant seaside town, famed for its annual international Celtic festival, when bands and singers from all over the world gather together with fiddle, pipe and drum.

At the mill, though, it’s perfectly peaceful. Hidden in restful forest, a few minutes from the coast and pretty Atlantic beaches, this cheerful cottage offers an inspiring location for a couple who want a natural holiday off the beaten tourist track.

It’s ideal for couples or single travellers exploring northern Spain. As you can see from the pictures, it’s like a loft transported to the countryside, with a colour scheme reflecting the wood used in the restoration.

The cottage has plenty of privacy, with only one other neighbouring mill property some 60 metres distant, where it is obscured by the forest and its rambling vegetation. A bridge over the river takes you to semi-wild gardens planted with azaleas, rhododendrons and hortensia: an area private to the two mills only.

Although you have a sense of camping out in the woods, there’s no sense of roughing it here. The accommodation may not be luxurious, but it's most definitely neat, comfortable and agreeable. After a day at the coast or tramping the paths through the woods, you can eat out on the outdoor terrace, or if it’s a chilly time of year, around the log stove.

The mill cottage has a simple kitchen and a cosy living room with a woodstove. Firewood and hot water are plentiful and not charged.

The bedroom has wooden flooring and a double bed. There's also a sleeping platform for a third person in a loft room (see photos), in an open-plan arrangement. The steps up are steep so we don't consider it suitable for children under seven years of age.

Heating, if required, is provided by a woodburning stove (firewood is supplied and included) and supplemented by a wall panel heater.

The accommodation is reached down a short track from private parking. There is a modest hamlet nearby, also stables to hire horses and a birdwatching observatory.

Here you are close to the Ortigueira estuary, Galicia beaches and the tremendous cliffs that round the coast. The coast is breathtaking and some of its sandy beaches lie at the foot of the highest cliffs on the European continent.

For swims, we recommend Fornos beach at the prettily named Cariño (“fondness” or “darling”) and also river swims at a practically private spot less than 10 minutes walk away, following the river path.

At the FEVE light railway station 500 metres away, a local train occasionally stops to pick up passengers and continues all the way to Ferrol.

Some excellent restaurants serving fresh seafood and fish are 15 to 20 minutes away in Espasante and Cedeira.

Nicholas | October | 2017

A very quiet location in a peaceful Galician village. Lots of walking from the casita. very good access to local towns. I think it is fair to say that in the autumn (we stayed late October) the mill cottage can feel quite cool and damp, an inevitable consequence of it's location in a ravine and on the water. However there is an excellent wood burning stove and a plentiful supply if wood to burn. The cottage has all the facilities you need (although cooking a bit limited) and a very comfy bed. A much enjoyed visit."

Me and my partner booked this cottage for a week away in Galicia in the first week of June, The cottage and the surrounding areas were very beautiful. The cottage itself came equipped with everything we needed for a week exploring Galicia. We were met by a Spanish lady on arrival who showed us round the cottage and was very helpful and friendly. The nearby beaches are extremely beautiful and we found dozens of secluded beaches within a 30 minute drive from the cottage, most of, which were empty or very sparsely populated The guide books of the local area in the cottage were very useful and easy to follow, we had a nice walk in the surrounding woods and hills on our first day and took the suggested cliff drive nearby for some amazing views of the coast and visited the local monestry, which had a few fantastic restaurants and small shops. The area itself is fairly remote with a few small towns within a 30 minute drive away but a great place to relax and enjoy some of the local seafood and beautiful countryside. Would definitely use rustical travel again, their service was first class and the cottage was stunning. Thanks for a lovely week Peter"

An enchanting converted watermill set in a magical fairy dell. We ( including Sam the dog) loved it. It even had reasonable speed, reliable broadband Not really suitable for four, even kids, as the mezzanine has a very low ceiling and the ladder is vertical Great walks from the cottage through woods and alongside streams. Lovely, virtually deserted beaches nearby. Very Galician, no concessions made to tourism."

Rustical Update

This property is only offered for parties up to 3 people.

Mill cottage was lovely and far exceeded our expectations and allowed us to have a wonderful peaceful week exploring the area. The owner was very friendly and helpful. The location was beautiful and we enjoyed walking along the river and following the walks detailed in the cottage book."

Lovely little cottage in the woods. Cosy, inviting and room enough for 2. The garden was lovely, although I would be nervous of having young children there as there were some deep areas in the stream. We loved the area, Gob smackingly beautiful beaches, genuinely surprised at how pretty, quiet and clean they were! Tried to do the local walk from the cottage as described in the book, but it was impassable, so wouldn't advise that. All in all, a relaxing holiday."

The cottage was beautiful, clean and well furnished. The lady who met us at the cottage was friendly, she had purchased the shopping we requested. We both appreciated the book of local activities that the owner had produced, it gave us lots of options in terms of walks and where to eat. One downside was the initial instructions on how to locate the cottage from the airport. We felt they did not give enough detail of how to leave A Coruna airport. Perhaps including some pictures of which direction to take from the airport and more detailed step by step instructions on which way to leave."

Rustical Update

Directions to this property from Coruna airport have been improved and now include photographs and clearer instructions.

The cottage was a beautiful place to get the break we needed. Tucked away in the forest just far enough away from civilisation but with easy access to the local beaches and towns. The local walks are beautiful and the woodburner is the perfect way to warm up after all the walking, swimming and fishing. We didn't miss the Internet once, which is saying something for a couple so attached to our technology. Our thanks to you for making it such a lovely and simple stay. We'll be back with the whole family next time. Hanna and Chad"

Many Thanks, Rustical Travel, for your great service and a fantastic holiday at the Mill Cottage in Galicia. The cottage itself was clean, spacious and furnished to a very good standard. With a stream running by outside, a large area of land and it's peaceful location in a wooded area, it really was the perfect romantic getaway. We would recommend this cottage to any couple or small family looking for a quiet break away from it all. We will be using your service again in the future. Thanks Again, Matthew and Gabriella."

We were absolutely delighted with the cottage in Galicia. The surrounding countryside together with our own woods and river were all that anyone could wish for. I must give.a special mention of our quite amazing housekeeper Marisol who even brought us produce from her own garden and nothing was too much trouble'. She had to come on our 3rd day because our alarm became faulty and sounded from 1a m until I was able to contact the owner at 10 in the early morning. Marisol was there within 15 minutes and replaced it for us. I would recommend the property with just 1 slight inconvenience that being that our particular cottage had no immediate internet or telephone nearby so taking our iPads was a bit of a problem to get in contact with family etc.perhaps it should be mentioned in your literature that AG 10(1) has no facility. Apart from that it was a lovely holiday."

The millhouse was a great place to stay as we were looking for a quiet scenic end to our holiday in Spain. The apartment was well designed and maintained and we would recommend it highly to other holiday makers seeking accom in Galicia."

Hilton | July | 2013

We spent the first week of our summer holiday in Spain at this property in Galicia. The cottage is located well off the beaten track and is set in beautiful wild gardens by a stream. You can hear the water babbling through the open windows and it is difficult to imagine a more beautiful, tranquil setting. The cottage itself is very small, but perfect for two people; it is very well-equipped and has everything you would need for a great, peaceful holiday. The remote location may be a problem for some people. There are literally no amenities within walking distance (5km), which means that you do need to drive if you want to eat out, shop or find internet access. The surrounding area is breathtakingly beautiful. There are a lot of information leaflets about local drives, walks etc in the cottage. We would recommend a visit to Cedeira - a really pretty coastal town, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Overall I would recommend this cottage to a couple looking to enjoy a peaceful, quiet holiday in the countryside, but not to people who want civilisation, nightlife or entertainment!"
