Overview

A holiday at this villa means enjoying a very special, private location at the foot of a dramatic mountain range where farmlands and views prevail.

It’s a good looking and nicely secluded property that benefits from through and through unspoilt views from inside the very house. Well-maintained and with good levels of comfort; this family country home is adequately prepared for holiday lets.

A perfect base for walks (many are signposted) through magical forests along fertile flanks of volcanoes that allow you to dip into their now tree-filled craters, while on your way to a cascade that offers wild swimming. Simply ideal.

If you feel like reducing your carbon footprint, simply leave your car parked, step out of the house and hike straight up to a wild swimming spot in less than 20 or 25 minutes. The picturesque village of Hostalets with some good restaurants is also only about a 25-minute walk away; at 1.8km it is 5 minutes away by car.

The house and gardens are not fenced as the owners have preferred to keep an open feel to it, and no property in the nearby vicinity means privacy is practically guaranteed. Except for the odd walker coming into the area who may catch a glimpse of the house and gardens from a distance, otherwise, the spot is wonderfully tranquil, private and a great enclave for nature lovers.

Kids are very much in their element here with over 2,000 m2 of lawned gardens, a play area with swings, a small football field, a basketball hoop and a lovely inviting pool. Just to add to the excitement: take a walk into the surrounding forests and pick some delicious wild strawberries during summer for a great bonding activity. Indoors also offers plenty of fun for the whole family: challenge yourselves to a table tennis competition in the basement or indulge in some board games.

The house itself enjoys good features like an ample living space with large windows that allow a generous amount of light through whilst blending the outdoor and indoor living areas together. There are several rooms to suit everyone in the family including two single bedded rooms and one kid´s room with 4 single beds in a fun bunk-bed arrangement.

Although this may not be a super luxurious villa nor one of the more rustic homes from our portfolio, it is nevertheless inviting and it manages to find a perfect balance between these two different characters without waiving comfort in the least. Unpretentious, yet satisfyingly pleasant.

The area is very serious in nature with farming fields throughout, forests, mountains... and it makes for the perfect holiday spot as it offers both close contact with the surroundings and the feel of being far from it all, while actually being only 5 minutes away from a picturesque village. Good facilities (such as a large supermarket) are only a 10 minute drive away.

Exploring by foot is a delight. The fertile volcanic soil has grown a healthy forest over the extinct outcrops which ring the zone and you can walk down into the cones. There are plenty of signposted walks. Also nearby is the unique fairy tale beech forest of Fageda d’en Jorda and there are a number of wild swimming areas, some with relatively easy access.

This is also a region for people who like trying the traditional Catalan cuisine. You will find some excellent restaurants as well as other more standard, albeit very good, establishments.

La Garrotxa is an area which has achieved a successful, prosperous balance of cattle rearing, tourism and complementary services. It’s one of those places where people look especially healthy and the local gastronomy and environment may have a lot to do with that.

Other attractions round here include Sant Joan de les Abadesses; medieval Besalu (one of the most beautiful villages in all of Catalonia); Olot town (for museums and bicycle hire and more good food); the lake at Banyoles for picnics, waterfalls and river swimming opportunities.

Excursions further afield will take you to Salvador Dali’s home town of Figueres and the castle museum dedicated to him, or to the splendid beaches of Emporda.

Karen | August | 2023

Fantastic property in a beautiful location - one of the best places we have ever been to. Everything you need is a 10 minute drive away and places to visit are no more than 40 minutes drive so perfect for seeing so much of the area. Pool and garden was great for the children in our group aged 8,12 and 16 and lots of fun was had."

A waste paper basket in bedrooms. A kettle that switched itself off (available one needed plug removed from socket). A guest book for guests to leave recommendations. Details of locations of any recommendations from the owner. We would add Quinze Ous restaurant in Les Preses as a recommendation for fine dining. During Covid provide suggestions where to get tests (CAP did not provide it, we went to Synlab in Olot) as this is a stress for anyone staying. We enjoyed the accommodation though, beautiful countryside and friendly people."

This was a lovely house within very easy reach of Barcelona. The area is quite rural, but with some medieval villages relatively local and worth exploring. The house was big, with plenty of bedroom space (although one of the bedrooms upstairs had an internal window with no Curtain which made it slightly redundant ) , but allowed for all to have their own space -the basement games room proved extremely popular with us all. The plot that the property stands within is beautiful but we did struggle to find the perfect ‘patio’ spot as there was no shaded terrace area as such - however the vast garden allowed for plenty of games. The gardens are open and although the area is quite private we did find that hikers heading up the path to the left made us feel rather exposed and I would have preferred greater privacy. The weekends especially seemed busier with hikers going past. We could not have faulted the owner who was welcoming friendly and really went out of her way to help us with questions and make us feel at home. The TV and music centre was great and the kitchen etc well stocked. This property would not suit a family with very young children as the stone stairs inside and open gardens could prove tricky to safeproof. We were rather plagued by wasps and felt that the pool, which was a plastic surround attracted them. There were many periods of the holiday where we couldn’t use the pool because of all the wasps sitting along the plastic sides. Equally the grass harboured many wasps. Perhaps a stone built pool would help to detract I don’t know. A nice place , but we felt a week was enough for us but it was a nice spot to spend it."
