Overview

We recommend this option to anyone who wants to get a real feel for the Spanish/Catalonian interior and spend a quiet week reading, walking well-marked footpaths, visiting cultural sites, enjoying a good wine with their meals, and going out from the house to stroll round an especially relaxing and charming village.

If you come with children, they have a games room to occupy them, bicycles, and a small jacuzzi pool.

Unspoilt, medieval Guimera (400 inhabitants), built on a hillside, is perfect for those who want to immerse themselves in a Catalonian culture of architectural and gastronomic elegance, spa baths, delightful villages, good bakeries and excellent local wines.

The grand GR-175 Cistercian circuit offers wonderful walks, and explorations on different days will take you to castles, monasteries and archaeological sites. The pretty mountains of Montserrat and beaches are an hour distant.

The stone-built house with wood beams and cool tile underfoot for the warm and sunny Continental climate is located at the threshold of the old quarter of the village. Close by is a confectioner’s that sells tasty traditional pastries and a very pleasant restaurant with terrace seating.

The house has two floors, with the downstairs providing the reception, and the accommodation being principally on the first floor: open plan and high-ceilinged with a rustic flavor, a nice kitchen, and the cozy bedrooms.

Decoration is in low-key yet colourful washes, and equipment is complete.

Guimera is a small village so shops and (wood-fired) bakeries are all walking distance. A little museum is run by local aficionados.

Buses to Barcelona can be taken practically at your doorstep, although limited to morning and afternoon buses, this allows day trips to Barcelona without the need of having a car.

In an hour you can be at Montserrat’s famed mountains, Costa Dorada beaches, Port Aventura (for the children’s Adventure and Aquatic Park), it’s the near-at-hand attractions that characterize holidays here in Lleida (Lerida) province.

It might be the spa town of Vallfogona de Rucorb just down the road, or exceptional Montblanc village – and it will almost certainly be one of the outstanding historic sites on the Cistercian Route.

The circular itinerary links the three great medieval monasteries of Santes Creus, Poblet and Vallbona de les Monges. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a good walk or hike (or mountain biking), you can pick on any section of the well-signposted GR-175 path and make a day of it.

It could be a walk through vineyards and fields to Vallbona convent, over wooded hills to Poblet in time for the monks’ sung evening prayers, or along the ridge of El Cogulló and then flatlands to the imposing monastery of the “Holy Cross”, Santes Creues.

These walks are as much about what you see along the way as getting there – and also what you eat and drink. Hostelries along the way in the villages will keep you going with fine local cuisine, and bear in mind that this area produces the finest wines in Catalonia.

It’s also the dry, sunny interior of Spain, so remember to take water and a hat.

Leisurely holidays for the grown-ups, an old village you feel at home in, with some agreeable walks and many cultural satisfactions, and some fun activities for children, plus a little pool with hydro-massage for all, make this place what it is.

By the way, ask us about local fairs and fiestas for the period you’re visiting and we’ll point you in the right direction. And if you want to try your hand a preparing an unusual local speciality, then try calçots, mild green onions, dipped in romesco sauce: a hugely popular Lerida snack consumed especially in early Spring.

During our most recent visit in June 2016, we were impressed with the house. Not only does it maintain its good standards, but we've had an even better impression than in our first visit. It is definitely a very pleasant, comfortable and charming place to spend a holiday.

Juliet | August | 2018

We had a lovely stay at this charming village house. It had plenty of space for a family and although the outdoor space and the plunge pool were a bit small, the games room with table football and table tennis easily made up for it. The town is quiet but very pretty; the locals were very chatty (even though we had no Catalan!). A great find was the local outdoor pool, a short drive or cycle ride along the road over the bridge, very popular from mid afternoon until late, and free to use. Good for day trips to Montseratt, Barcelona etc , and in lovely countryside itself."

Firstly, Rustical Travel provide an absolutely brilliant personal service from start to finish. Simple, clear communication through the entire booking process and great advice and support to help you make the most of your holiday. Secondly, the holiday home is absolutely first class. The house is immaculate and everything you could wish for is provided. The owners are lovely and explain everything when you arrive and take hold of the keys. The house and patio are spotless, the village is quiet and basic amenities are close by. The village is an absolute hidden gem, with winding paths leading from the village up the hillside to the church and lookout tower and the surrounding areas are equally as interesting. Huge thanks to everyone at Rustical Travel for an absolutely perfect holiday."

Hi, We had the most lovely holiday. The house was beautiful and spacious, we really enjoyed it. The little Jacuzzi pool was great. The house had the most rustic charm with stone walls and some antique furnichings and some more modern but all married very well. We loved Gimera and the whole area, we explored around a lot and really fell in love with Catalonia. The house was very clean and the owner and his wife very friendly and gave us a gorgeous welcome basket of local bread, meat and olive oil (which was so nice and I was gutted I didn't manage to buy a bottle to bring home - next time..) The beds were comfortable (if firm) and the bedding nice, we certainly all slept well! We did loads of walking (Poblet was beautiful and to be recommended), wine tasting, eating (loads of local cured meats), riding and visiting various places of interest. All in all a wonderful time. To quote our daughter ' I would put it up there with one of our best ever holidays' and she is 19 and we have had a lot of holidays in that time! Thanks to all at Rustical Travel who were all so very friendly and helpful. All the information and map sent to us was invaluable and excellent. We will definately recommend Rustical Travel and hopefully use them again, soon. Thanks very much, From a very satisfied holiday maker."
