Overview

This is a marvellous villa. Over the years, the interior has matured as much as the tropical gardens outside.

Facilities are those of a modern holiday home. It accommodates eight people very comfortably.

The main living room is quite spacious under a vaulted wooden ceiling. Tasteful, rustic and antique furnishings, along with original oil paintings and objets d’art reflecting the owner's personal taste, all balance very agreeably in a sort of kitsch and rather eclectic style.

The kitchen is fully equipped and there's a prep kitchen, too. If cooking’s not your thing when on holiday and you don’t want to always eat out, the services of a top cook can be contracted to prepare meals of your choice. There are three inside dining areas and more outside.

All bedrooms are very comfortable, with the kind of detail you expect from a home of distinct class. Also on this floor is a leafy verandah from where you can look down to the tree-lined river, along which you can take leisurely strolls via picnic spots.

The beauty continues outside in the form of the best developed semi-tropical and tropical gardens we have seen at a private house in Spain. Colourful and fragrant blooms thrive under date palms, avocado and banana. In one corner, koi and goldfish swim round an old spring-fed well.

The greenery surrounds swimming pool which, like the broad stone-flagged terrace (ideal for unhurried dinners), is illuminated by night.

The entire property is consummately private, yet the village is only a short walk away. For many, Jimena outdoes Gaucin (30 mins away) in charm with its elegant streets arranged under a Moorish castle. There is no shortage of cafés, shops, bars and good restaurants: you can read about them in the Jimena Guide we'll send you before your holiday starts.

There are some wonderful walks in the area and a well-made housebook explains the best of these. You are just minutes away from the Alcornoque Natural Park, a haven for birdlife which surrounds the village. Horse riding can also be arranged.

The location offers a number of enticing options for day trips. Gaucin, Gibraltar, Ronda, Seville, Jerez and the beaches at Sotogrande. Sotogrande, together with Valderrama, is also a major golfing destination.

Railway enthusiasts can take the little narrow gauge train from Jimena to Ronda, which nowadays is an even more popular destination than Cordoba.

And Morocco is not far away! A 35-minute hovercraft trip from the surfers' paradise of Tarifa takes you to Tangiers in Morocco.

The property owner is on hand, if needed, in a neighbouring garden cottage which is completely and discretely independent from the property.

Teresa | May | 2016

This is a lovely welcoming villa, you feel like you are sharing someone's home. The facilities were excellent, kitchen is well equipped. Very traditional Spanish feel with original art and rugs. Nice pool area with its own fridge and bar! The location is good for a walk to the bars and restaurants in the village, even if uphill....it is great to be able to stroll out along the river and venture further afield in the hills. We would love to be able to come here again!!"

A beautiful, homely and spacious property with an authentic Spanish feel. Lovely pool area and gardens. Good location on the edge of Jimena but still walking distance (up a steep hill) to the small town. Very helpful owner also on hand to assist with any queries."

Paula | June | 2015

It's not often that we've been able to say that the advertised photographs of a holiday property don't do it justice, but think we could in this case. it's not that the photographs were bad: it's just that La Fuente Vieja has a lot more going for it than can be captured in photographs. It really is in a special place, at the edge of the village of Jimena de la Frontera (very handily 40 minutes or so from the most-civilised-airport-on-the-planet, if you are flying from the UK, Gibraltar), and bordering the magical Hozgarganta river. One of the turrets of Jimena's moorish castle looks down over the property, and the remains of an18th century canal, constructed to try and harness the river's flow to power the bellows of an iron smelting works, used to manufacture cannonballs for the Battle of Gibraltar, start just outside the gates to the property. Outside the villa, there are many spacious terraces and balconies, making it an ideal destination for larger families with teenagers or groups of adults who don't always want to sit with each other! And inside, the huge open-plan kitchen/dining/living area is always so cool, so a welcome destination in the heat of the day. The pool is gorgeous: not large, but very secluded being surrounded by walls and shaded by lush foliage (the Datura trees were flowering beautifully when we were there). The old spring, after which the villa is named, is a particular feature: a constantly-filled cool pool surrounded by fern-clad rocks complete with river carp and large koi: a great place for an early evening gin and tonic! Inside, it is obvious that the villa has been enjoyed over many decades as a family home. Furnished with antiques and local pieces of furniture and ornaments, it has a distinctly Moroccan feel. And, due to the triple wall construction, remains remarkably cool, even though it was in the high 30's C when we were there. Although perhaps the bathrooms and kitchen could be due for modernisation, they work perfectly well, were spotlessly clean, and any small problems we had were promptly sorted by Eliza, who has recently inherited the villa and has taken over its day to day running. We chose the villa because of its close proximity to Gibraltar airport (family members came out at various times during our two weeks there) and because it was possible to walk into town to eat. In fact, it is also possible to shop without a car, as the two supermarkets in town are both situated on the road into town. There are a number of restaurants and bars in Jimena. In our opinion none were truly outstanding (we would say that Jimena has more of the feel of a commuter town than a bustling holiday destination) but all perfectly pleasant, inexpensive and certainly seem to serve cuisine typical of the local area. Tapas certainly seems to be a good choice! There are numerous restaurants further afield if you are prepared to drive or take taxis. We really enjoyed cooking in the (generally) well-equipped kitchen and made extensive use of the barbecue next to the spring as the quality of the ingredients at the supermarket and butcher was superb. There is even a shop selling a huge range of frozen food, which was handy for seafood for our paellas. I suppose it would be fair to point out that, perhaps, like many rural towns and villages in this part of Spain, Jimena does seem to have a problem with stray dogs (or perhaps just dogs which are left to wander outside their owners' homes), so some nights were disturbed by loud barking (101 Dalmation style!), plus donkey noises, plus cockerels at dawn... We are fine with dogs, but for those that are nervous, those that live in a large (but very placid) group at the end of the road could cause some anxiety when walking back from town. Chico and the lovely puppy Lola, who belong to Eliza, were a delight (and would happily be taken on walks along the river), but can be locked away in the entirely separate cottage garden if they are not welcome. I must admit that by the end of our two week stay we were much less disturbed by the local menagerie: probably a lot to do with the copious amounts of local red wine which were consumed! The countryside outside the villa (a National Park) is very spectacular and incredibly green considering the heat in summer. There was so much to explore that we have vowed to come back again to this part of Spain when it is not so hot, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this villa to others considering doing the same. We wish Eliza luck in her new venture and look forward to seeing how the villa evolves over the coming years."

David | October | 2014

A delightful villa in a superb location. We were blessed with excellent weather. I suspect that we saw the villa at its best. Perhaps in rain its limitations would have been more apparent. I do think the quality of the cutlery and kitchen utensils generally could have been better. But one made do. We were a group friends so I suppose the feeling of 'camping out' became part of the fun. I had expected the presence of the owner so close at hand to have been a downside but all in all it wasn't. And indeed one can only wish Vilja well. The service we were directly provided by Rustical Travel was fine, prompt and efficient. In retrospect perhaps the villa was just a smidgin over-priced. But we had a great holiday for which we thank you and of course, Vilja."

Rustical Update

Prices for this holiday home dropped for 2015. Considering the gardens, the facilities and the addition of a new bedroom in 2015, we find the price better value for year 2015.

Beautiful, spacious villa. Stayed cool despite the high temperatures outside. Lovely, non-intrusive owner. The pool was great with sunny and shaded areas around. Jimena de la Frontera was a lovely town with some really good places to eat just a short walk away. Great organisation from Rustical Travel. Would happily book through you again."
