Overview

As we know, some old houses are restored to death by over-enthusiastic new owners. This is an example of how to improve and add while leaving in place elements that suit the style and atmosphere of an attractive Andalucian village.

The result is a fairly simple yet attractive house, rustically framed by the original floors and doors, furnished with some polished wood antiques, and then painted in vivid Mediterranean blue and earthy ochre. Decoration is marked by paintings chosen by the artist owners, whose touch is evident throughout the house.

The location is central Gaucin: right by shops and restaurants. The 12th century castle is also close by, up a steep slope. The house feels generally quiet and its outdoor terraces are peaceful retreats.

The main hallway and its reception area connect to a large living area, kitchen and the downstairs patio. From the living area, which has an open fire place and plenty of sitting space, there leads off a full bathroom and doors open to the patio with its tempting little mosaic-tiled swimming pool.

The entire patio is an extremely pleasant area to relax and dine, or for children to play. Like the upstairs terraces, the patio and pool are totally private, unseen by neighbouring houses.

On the first floor are the main living room and three bedrooms.

There's another shower room and a terrace which goes down to the patio via exterior stone steps.

Outdoor areas are completed by the roof terrace, from where the views are superb. It’s exciting scenery, with the river winding down through the valleys looking for the sea, the rock of Gibraltar and mountains to one side and distant Africa appearing to float above the Mediterranean.

There are plenty of reasons for choosing Gaucin as a holiday base. Rambling in the local environs is popular (there are books on the trails), and there are good places to have tapas and enjoy Mediterranean cuisine. We will send you recommendations for good restaurants, tapas bars and activities as one of your holiday documents, including a sample circular walk.

Parking is free in Gaucin. There are often spots on a nearby street, otherwise there's a car park at the end of the village by a supermarket and a café-bar that serves good tapas, 5 to 10 minutes walk away.

For day trips, you are spoilt for choice: the historic town of Ronda is just 40 minutes away, Gibraltar is only one hour away. And nearer at hand are traditional villages such as Genalguacil or Jimena de la Frontera: well worth a visit.

Those craving the seaside will find Mediterranean beaches just 40 minutes from the house.

Lynne | September | 2014

Beautiful property. The owners gave us more things for the baby than we had asked, a rug to play on, plastic bowls in particular were great. Perfect location for us as we had grandparents and a child under one. There was a really good tapas bar and supermarket literally round the corner. A couple of things for the owners and future renters. The steps inside were steep with no banister which made it difficult for the grandparents to climb. Both are over 70. The oven falls out of the hole when you open the door, or close the door. We knew parking was difficult but found a space in the street and parked within the lines. We still got the front bumper hit and scraped through no fault of ours. There is a car park up the hill which if free and after the bump we parked there every day and had no problems. It was about a 10 minute walk and next to another supermarket. We would stay there again but our baby will be walking and I'm not sure how practical it will be. If you have other toddler friendly properties I would be interested in more information as we are planning another holiday next year, not necessarily in Gaucin, maybe nearer the beach. Thanks Lynne"

Rustical Update

We have added the new car park to the text description for the property and also added a note to the Booking information to advise against the house if you have toddlers or restricted mobility.
