Overview

At the top of Gaucin, a craggy cliff face rises up to the 12th century castle built by the Moors. Directly below here, and commanding marvellous views of the village and sea while remaining part of the village, is a lovely little cottage in a rocky setting of shrubs and giant cacti.

You can park very close to the property and the walk into the village is no more than 5 minutes.

It’s a delightfully different village retreat, at once relaxing and inspiring. With the high view of the Bay of Gibraltar, you might almost be a look-out for the castle. Yet despite its intriguing location, access from Gaucin is easy and you're still just part of the village. Walks into the countryside start from your doorstep, and one short stroll takes you to a naturally-set, chlorine-free, filtered swimming pool.

It's a compact house, whose large windows fill the main open-plan room with light and offer views down through the mountains to the Mediterranean Sea. On clear days, you can make out Morocco. The decoration has gentle colours and furniture is neat and comfortable. The kitchen is thoughtfully equipped and there are two bedrooms. The whole house has a holiday bungalow feel to it.

Below the property, a public path leads up to the castle, but it doesn’t detract from the sense of seclusion or disturb the tranquillity of cottage’s terrace and rocky gardens. On the porch terrace, a teak table and chairs provide opportunities to eat out or have drinks while enjoying unbeatable views out to the Bay of Gibraltar.

A roundish, good-sized swimming pool is 50 metres from the house along a path; this is shared with the Spanish artist owners (very friendly people), who live in a house nearby, which is unseen from the rental cottage. They sometimes use the pool after sundown, the rest of the time it's all yours. It's salt-filtered and chlorine-free.

The pool area has extraordinary views, and as well as sunloungers and shade. It's gated along the path from the house so that children cannot wander off there alone, and protective fencing safeguards pool users from the drop below, but do bear in mind it's not visible from the cottage, so young children should be accompanied. Generally speaking, the cottage is a great holiday choice for kids, who will have fun exploring the limestone hill with its occasional small caves.

Gaucin is one of the most popular of Ronda's white villages. It has all the services you may require for your holiday stay, and before you travel we will send you recommendations for good restaurants, tapas bars and activities, including a sample circular walk. Those craving the seaside will find Mediterranean beaches just 40 minutes from the house.

If you're here on Easter Sunday, apart from the traditional religious processions there is the added excitement of bulls let loose to run the streets.

Other enticing day trips are the historic town of Ronda at just 40 minutes, also Gibraltar, one hour away. Nearer at hand are traditional Andalucia villages such as Genalguacil or Jimena de la Frontera: well worth a visit and stopping for a meal.

Graham | September | 2016

Simply wonderful. Great location on the edge of the village to be very private but near enough to the village facilities that a short walk is all that is needed. The views from the terrace stretch all the way to the Med and beyond, perfect for a relaxing holiday. We absolutely loved it."

The photos on the website don't do this property justice - we found it to be a lovely charming rustic cottage in a fantastic location. The pool is closer to the property than appears from the photos and the cottage demonstrates the artistic flair of the owners. The views are amazing and Gaucin is only five minutes stroll away with a variety of friendly tapas bars and more high end restaurants. A perfect holiday - we'll be back"

A lovely holiday stay in a well equipped, comfortable cottage. The owner and staff were very welcoming and friendly. The use of the pool in its magnificent surroundings was a real bonus. A first rate experience."

We had a fabulous week at the above property in Gaucin earlier in August. The owners, particularly Juan, were most helpful and kind throughout, the property was clean and well presented and we loved using the outdoor terraces and pool area. Great location, guests may benefit from being warned about the narrow access roads! Information provided by Rustical Travel prior to our trip was superb. Thank you for a super holiday which the family thoroughly enjoyed."

We absolutely loved the cottage and location, Juan and Ana were welcoming and helpful but let us have our space, we felt like we had the pool to ourselves as they only used in the evening and we seemed to work implicitly around each other. It was great having parking on their property, particularly as we arrived during the fiesta, it meant your hire car was safely behind closed doors. The views are astonshing, the castle is very special and we felt privileged to be so near to it. We really liked the cottage which is simple and comfortable, very much a holiday home, nothing to be anxious about, but with lovely touches, like the art and pottery. We have an eight year old and 16 year old and they both liked the cottage and location, and we weren't afraid to use it. The kitchen is surprisingly well equipped for it's size and we got down to some serious cooking in it. The figs and grapes being in season was a delight all in all fantastic, we found all aspects of booking excellent and were really impressed with the website and selection of houses to rent, infact to find rustical in an array of bewildering websites was a delight."

Lovely location and house. Some features a bit tatty though. Bathroom especially. Garden a bit sad. Having said that we loved the location so much would probably book again."
