Overview

We love the sleepy hamlet of Tijola. With only a few houses spread along a narrow country lane, this little spot in the Granadian landscape has its very own personality nonetheless.

The enclave and its surroundings hold characteristics more closely related to a village in Mexico or Morocco: a semi tropical climate; dry whilst also lush, thanks to the Guadalfeo River which feeds the native vegetation.

Even though this dwelling is not smack in the middle of nowhere, the hamlet still breaths an air of tranquillity and slow-living.

The country lane below the cottage, which is actually a dead end road, is generally quiet as it does not receive much traffic other than from neighbours or the occasional passerby. You get a good sense of privacy here.

Before it became refurbished for holiday purposes, this property was owned by a friendly Spanish couple who was loved by everyone in the hamlet and who even ran a small bakery from their home.

And for those who have read “Driving Over Lemons”, this house is the one mentioned by Chris Stewart, the writer, as the place he visited to make his phone calls (the only local house at the time that had a telephone)!

The cottage itself is also full of character and tastefully finished. The owners smartly maintained its traditional feel while also giving it a fresh look: neither too simple nor overcomplicated.

You can tell lots of planning and dedication when into making this place feel as cosy and homey as possible.

The ceilings, with their whitewashed chestnut beams and canes have been kept as they were centuries ago. Some traditional Spanish floors are also still in place. Its thick walls, built with stones from the very river that passes nearby, maintains a comfortable temperature all year round.

Bedroom 1 can perhaps get a bit warm during summer so the managers have thoughtfully installed an air-conditioning unit – otherwise it is generally pleasant indoors. And winter bookings are also welcome; there is no central heating system but it benefits from a few wall heaters, a wood burner and usually mild winters.

Both bedrooms have their own bathroom; one is en-suite while the other is just opposite the other bedroom. The kitchen is well-equipped for self-catering holidays even though there is no dishwasher.

Outdoor living is also remarkably pleasant, both by day and by night.

Enjoy an alfresco meal prepared on the large gas barbecue, relax under the covered furnished terrace, sunbathe or take a dip in the pool; all of that without ever missing out on the views that spread across the valley to the Lujar Mountains.

On clear nights, stars fill the dark backdrop and the property takes on a vibrant feel with the illuminated pool and warm outdoor lamps placed strategically throughout.

The overall feel is that of a home away from home.

Access to the property is quite straightforward as it is just adjacent to the quiet country lane that runs through the hamlet. Parking is via a short unmade ramp, this access is hassle-free and with your own spot right next to your holiday home.

Tijola doesn´t have any facilities of its own but Orgiva Town is a mere 4 kms away. Leave your peace and quiet for a livelier town with plenty of tapas bars, banks, chemists, small supermarkets... and you won´t want to miss the market on Thursdays for local fresh produce of every kind.

For days out, take a 40 min drive to the beach, 40 minutes or so for Granada (to see the amazing Alhambra Palace) or visit the small mountain villages of Pampaneira, Bubion and Capileira, less than 30 mins away.

The Old Baker's House was in a wonderful location, set in rural Alpujarras, equal distance from the beach and Granada. It was also lovely to go into the mountains. The house was beautiful, a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the view from the pool area."
