Overview

A private hideaway for couples, this is a charmingly furnished and romantic cottage in little Atalbeitar, a sleepy hamlet at the end of a country road in the pretty Taha area of the high Alpujarra (at 1,100 metres).

The mountainside from here is criss-crossed by paths that lead to market gardens, acequias (irrigation channels), out-of-the-way farmhouses and other villages.

The independent, recently-built self-catering accommodation occupies an elevated position on the edge of the village, by the old church. Car parking is on the street below (extremely quiet: everyone knows each other here), from where steps go up past the church to a garden entrance.

The house is accessed via a shaded, furnished porch terrace, from where views range over the hamlet below, to a ruined mosque on the brow of a hill, the disused Mines of the Oath, and all the way out to the southern Contraviesa mountains: the last range before the Mediterranean Sea.

The open-plan design makes full use of its 50 m², with a long wall of windows that look out to the mountain views and let the light flood in.

A nicely made kitchen area is complemented by a breakfast/dining spot by the window, and the cottage then continues to a cosily recessed sitting area, furnished in Moroccan style.

At the far end, simply curtained off, is a pretty, wooden floored bedroom decorated in mauve. Its double bed has an iron bedstead, overhead fan and mosquito netting. Balcony doors open wide to fill the room with natural light, while remaining completely private and intimate, unseen from outside.

A shower room leads off directly from the bedroom.

Outside are semi-wild gardens planted with flowering shrubs, where two recliners invite to spells in the sun.

Bread is delivered three times a week to Atalbeitar and fish once. Atalbeitar’s population is too small to maintain a permanent bar or restaurant, although in the summer months a small tavern in the square sometimes opens to provides cheap cold drinks for the thirsty.

You have very good places to eat in nearby Mecina (including a French vegetarian restaurant) and tapas bars both there and in nearby Pitres, which is the place for your shopping and most other needs.

Walks from the village are along pathways that meander through the mountainside, crossing gullies, down through ancient chestnut trees and along the acequias, eventually linking up with other little villages such as Ferreirola or Mecina, or going high up into the wilds.

Popular excursions take you to the spectacular Poqueira Gorge just 10 minutes away, further up the Sierra Nevada mountains to the Seven Lagoons or the summit of Mulhacén; to Granada for the Alhambra; to the high Buddhist centre of O Sel Lin; or down to the Mediterranean coast for beaches. Local horseriding and pottery classes are also available.

A romantic week in La Alpujarra is a very affordable luxury at this cheery apartment-style cottage.

YOUR REVIEWS

Ben | May | 2016

Lovely rustic but together cottage, clean and tidy, beautiful views. The owner was very helpful and friendly providing maps of walks and info on local markets but otherwise left alone. was very quiet, self contained. no parking outside, as is the nature of most of village houses anyway."

We really loved this apartment. It was extremely peaceful, the bed was very comfortable, the wood burning stove was great on the chilly evenings. Although we could not walk to a restaurant or shop we found the description very accurate and prepared us quite well for the hairpin bends. Nothing could prepare you completely! We would travel again with Rustical travel and hope to visit another part of Spain next time."

We had a really good time in Dominiques cottage . very clean and tidy very tranquil and very relaxing . Nothing was to much trouble for Dominique she loaned us a hair drier and when we asked about if there were any sun loungers she went and bought brand new ones . All in all a very good holiday"

We wanted to let you know what a wonderful experience we had and how much we appreciated your efforts in making everything about property number AP 37 go as smoothly as it did. We were especially grateful that you took the precaution of calling us to let us know of the last-minute change in keyholder information, rather than entrusting the information to an e-mail that there was no certainty we would receive in time. Again, thank you for your diligence!"
