Overview

Atalbeitar is a sleepy hamlet at the end of a country road in the pretty Taha area of the high Alpujarra. The mountainside from here is crisscrossed by paths that lead to market gardens, acequias (irrigation channels), out-of-the-way farmhouses and other villages.

Reached via some steps up from the church on the edge of the village, this independent holiday cottage offers fine views over Atalbeitar to the Contraviesa mountain range.

It is nicely tucked away with a private garden and pool.

The style is classically simple, following the tradition of homes in this interesting historic enclave high up in the Granada mountains, where Moors still lived long after being expelled from the rest of Spain.

Well-prepared as a holiday villa and sporting a delicious pool in its private garden, its architecture and character demonstrate this cultural influence, with thick, rounded walls, beam-and-slate ceilings and floors of terracotta. The pleasing design also reflects the subtle tastes of the artist owner.

It's a quintessentially tranquil place, where you feel at home immediately.

The cottage is at the end of a garden planted with almond trees and rose bushes, and entrance is through the garden gate. You walk past the pool, which sits under a natural rock wall in this mountainside setting, to a home built on two floors. From its private terrace, steps descend directly to the pool area.

The layout is convenient enough for most children but little ones might struggle as there are a number of steps up to the villa and up and down once there.

Under a shaded porch, an old chestnut door open to a cool lobby. It's large enough to contain a small sitting area with comfortable armchairs. At the back, the rock cliff against which the whole house is built has been left strikingly bare.

On the same floor are a twin bedroom and blue bathroom. The style and feel is rustic and traditional, and this is the coolest area of the house for summertime siestas, when the afternoon is at its hottest.

The other bedroom, double-bedded, is on the first floor: a bright and colourful floor, with plenty of natural light illiuminating the sitting and dining areas. The rock here been tamed into an organic wall and fashioned also into a bench seat and shelving.

The dining room communicates with the kitchen via an archway and opens to the terrace, another pleasant option for mealtimes.

This terrace, just above the pool, affords views of the hamlet below and all the way over to the southern Contraviesa mountains: the last range before the Mediterranean Sea.

Bread is delivered three times a week to Atalbeitar and fish once. Atalbeitar's population is too small to maintain a permanent bar or restaurant, although in the summer months a small tavern in the square opens sporadically to provides cold drinks for the thirsty.

You have very good places to eat in nearby Mecina (including a French vegetarian restaurant) and tapas bars both here and in nearby Pitres, which is the place for your shopping and most other needs.

In Pitres, there is also a garden restaurant that opens from spring to autumn.

For some, this is a place to lie back, relax and soak up the mountain peacefulness, but the walking is almost irresistible. You don't need the car: just put on those boots and start walking.

From the village are lead pathways that meander through the mountainside, crossing gullies, down through ancient chestnut trees and along the acequias (irrigation channels), eventually linking up with other little villages such as Ferreirola or Mecina.

By car, popular excursions take you to the spectacular Poqueira Gorge just 10 minutes away, further up the Sierra Nevada mountains; to Granada for the Alhambra; to the high Buddhist centre of O Sel Lin; or down to the Mediterranean coast for beaches. Horseriding is also available.

YOUR REVIEWS

Emma | June | 2017

It is a lovely cottage with a beautiful secluded garden and pool. It is a very comfortable and convenient place to stay and the owner, Dominique, has restored it well in a simple and attractive style and with lots of nice pieces of furniture, objects and some of her own paintings. She is an excellent host who looked after us well and made sure that everything was ok. We had a really lovely holiday there and will definitely return. Atalbeitar is a pretty village with excellent walks straight from the door. There is a casual bar in the village square and and everything else you need is only a short drive away. I would definitely recommend this cottage!"

Alison | May | 2017

We had a completely wonderful time at this little house. Dominique was the kindest and most generous of hosts. She even found a cot and small child sleeping bag for us to use. Our little girl, who was almost 2, fell in love with all the roses. I can see why, I have rarely seen so many. Everything was as picturesque and perfect as it could be. I wish we could have stayed for far longer. Our week was over much too soon."

We absolutely love this property. While it is rustic, it exudes simple class. For a completely relaxing break with absolutely no interruptions this is for you. If you want night life, restaurants and bars, then you are looking in the wrong place. I would say that I can't recommend it highly enough, but don't tell everyone as I'd like to keep this little gem a secret so its always available for me :-)"

James Watson | August | 2016

We really liked this property and its wonderful pool - the pictures really don't do it justice! We particularly liked the property's character and real sense of age, with exposed beams and rock face! The village itself is beautiful and superbly located, with others within easy walking distance. We found it best just to explore the immediate area, rather than trying to take in the whole of the Aljuparras. If we were to be critical of anything it would be level of equipment in the kitchen, with things like pots/pans and cutlery being pretty tired and in need of replacement. Less able visitors might also want to be warned of the steep hike up to the property. It wasn't a problem for us, but might be a challenge for some (particularly when carrying cases etc)."

Rustical Update

According to the property manager, the cutlery and some pans have been replaced.

Stefan | September | 2015

We found the cottage to be delightfully quirky, well presented and in keeping with it's rustic surroundings, almost as if built outwards from the rock face. Extremely tranquil both day and night it is perfectly positioned for all the La Taha villages. Would always choose this property when exploring the Sierra Nevada range."

Mary | August | 2015

Lovely cottage with a stunning pool. We spent many happy hours soaking up the sun and the atmosphere on the terrace. Dominique - the owner - was very friendly and allowed us to pick fresh figs and almonds from the garden. Our only slight criticism is that - for our needs as a young family - we would have liked a more fully equipped kitchen - as we were often cooking at home. But this is only a tiny thing and did not spoil our enjoyment of the holiday. We were really impressed with Rustical travel. Thank you for sending us so much useful information, for accurately describing the properties that we stayed in and for attention to detail such as asking if our youngest son would require a cot. We would certainly be very happy to book another holiday with yourselves and would have no hesitation in recommending to friends and family. Best wishes, The Fletcher family"

I found this accommodation to be excellent, with superb views and in a quiet location . There were moments when the only sounds were crickets or the cries of Booted Eagles. My kids loved the pool, but I would probably say that it would not be suitable for very young children."

Maggie | June | 2014

We had a happy time there the peace and quiet was heavenly. Our only observation was that the kitchen utensils need a little attention, not in a high tech way but at least in working order. We really like the area and will certainly go back to La Taha again. Thank you and to Dominique who enabled us to have the privacy we wanted."
