Overview

Slip straight into the casual rhythms of country life, enjoy the farm eggs or organic marmalade that your easy-going neighbouring hosts have available, maybe even a ready-prepared Mediterranean vegetarian dinner, or else be completely private and on your own in what previous guests have called a "priceless tranquillity" and "wonderful natural setting".

You’ll surely be interested in visiting one or more of the following, all of which are a 30-minute drive from the house: the jagged sierra of Montserrat and its monastery, the pretty villages of Mura and Talamanca, Cardona’s salt mountain, historic Vic on market day, Berga as the gateway to the Pyrenees.

In your immediate environs are woods for walks, a 40-hectare vineyard whose wines you can buy, also wine cellars in town that feature sparkling cavas, a quality butcher's, bakery and supermarkets, opportunities for eating out and active tourism, and a summer swimming pool open to the public.

Your holiday home is a spacious, self-catering apartment attached to a massive, traditional masia. Your neighbours (and discreet hosts, simply on hand if you need them) are Thomas and Sara, the master carpenter and his partner responsible for creating eco-cottage ref CA22 also on our books.

We slept very well here in beds which had an ergonomic comfort to them.

You enjoy complete privacy and have your own garden area, but having friendly people on the same estate who have dedicated themselves for so many years to a well-balanced, natural way of life is really one of the factors that makes this place special.

A visit to Thomas's workshop round the corner (you don't hear it from the apartment) is always interesting. When we visited, he had just completed (after 600 hours) a magnificent wooden dragon, fashioned from juniper, with mother-of-pearl for eyes.

The masia is just outside Artés, situated on a rise which means lovely views over the countryside all the way to the Pyrenees, and to nearby woods that you can explore.

A short track up from the road curves round to your own parking space and you pass through your private garden area to the first floor apartment entrance, which is up a well-stepped ramp.

The steps can be gated at the top to make an enclosed deck terrace. It's simply furnished and meals can be carried out directly from the kitchen.

The country kitchen is very congenial, filled with natural light, the kind of kitchen that naturally invites you to sit around and chat. It has a fine view, too. When we were there in the month of November, the Pyrenees were white with snow (see photo).

The entire apartment is built into the old masia, and there are some strikingly well-crafted features. The kitchen hob is set into an 18th century stone plinth and you'll note wood items throughout, fruit of the carpenter maestro who lives next door.

Pass though green doors to a hallway and you'll find a refreshingly cool space with a polished stone floor, fitted with plenty of wardrobe space and installed with a formidable Danish woodburning stove.

Bedroom 1 is very inviting. It has a floor and wall of wood, and a pretty view with window seating.

The living room is a beauty, also. There are two sofas and Indian wall hangings. The curious will be intrigued to know that a false floor in the cupboard (now closed-off for safety) leads down to a secret room and a tunnel which was used as a hiding place and escape route during, but also long before, the Spanish Civil War.

A door from the living room opens to Bedroom 2, another spacious room. Its floor is of timber and its ceiling wood-beamed, painted green between the beams. A sofa in this room can be made up as a sofa-bed, so two people sleeping apart can share the bedroom, or else it can be used by a child sharing the room with their parents.

The window also has traditional Catalonian stone window seats.

The two bedrooms share one bathroom, which is off a short hallway from the kitchen. It has a unique, rather sexy, polished wood washbasin.

The apartment is fresh in summer thanks to thick stone walls and hill breezes, and you also have a good electric fan if need be.

Outside and below, you have a large garden space with a table for dining. It's not one of those manicured landscaped gardens you find at expensive villas, just simple and appropriate –and it's being improved to make it more interesting. In 2014, cypresses (30 of them!), olive trees and a mulberry were added.

In the garden, a refreshing pool is the latest attraction for cooling off in the hot summer months. The pool is already fully integrated in the gardens with five different plants around it and a bench to sit on. Holidaymakers have already commented favourably on the nature pool and have booked again for next year: the clearest sign to us that this property works. While the property is suitable for families with children, parents with little ones should note that the pool is ungated.

Among the trees at the entrance to the woods are a couple of hammocks. Further afield are streams with places to bathe.

It's a short downhill roll into town by car, or there’s a short cut path that gets you there in less than10 minutes. A taxi is another option if you're coming home late from town.

Artés isn't one of those picture postcard places, being functional but pleasant enough, and it has good shopping facilities including an organic produce store, plus 5 restaurants (one makes terrific pizzas), and an open air swimming pool that opens during the summer.

The day trips detailed above aren't the end of the story. Add to these the local vineyards and wine cellars of Catalonian "champagne"; Sant Llorenç Natural Park and its caves; a sanctuary for birds of prey; a waterfall in a pine and oak forest; Cardona Castle; San Benet de Bages Monastery; horseriding at Moià; bicycle routes at Manresa; and even balloon rides!

Drive north along the highway for 45 minutes and you enter the Pyrenees; and the same distance south takes you into the heart of vibrant Barcelona.

Although you may prefer to make this a homely holiday, soaking up the peace and quiet of this wonderful house.

YOUR REVIEWS

Rich | June | 2023

The hosts here: Thomas and Sara were excellent. very helpful (picked up heavy shopping and cleared our recycling as we were on a motorbike) above and beyond. Pool is a great addition as it was very hot when we were there. Good location near the Pyrenees and other great Motorcycling routes. Shame that the lane (although straight) to the property was gravel which made it difficult for a heavy motorcycle as the gravel was quite deep in places, this should be added to the description for consideration by any other bikers on large motorcycles. No air conditioning, but there was mesh on the windows which helped keep the temperatures inside cool at night. Overall a very nice property which we would highly recommend."

Absolutely fabulous time at Malla Petita. A beautiful space for our family to stretch out and relax in, full of fun things for the children and a lovely eco friendly reed pool to cool us down when the temperatures soared. Loads to do in the area, we were busy every day with castles and mines and trains and river swimming and walks and winery visits. I can not recommend highly enough"

Quiet rustic location with beautiful views, superb for walking. The property had everything we needed and the eco pool was wonderful to cool off in. Thomas is a friendly and helpful host even providing us with delicious home grown tomatoes! As a family we would prefer to have twin beds in the second bedroom. Great organisation from Rustical Travel ensured all went smoothly. Thank you for a lovely holiday."

We enjoyed a wonderful week here. Sara and Thomas gave us a great welcome and we immediately felt at home in the property. The kids loved the eco pool and the caravan and the kids room was really well equipped. We took some lovely walks into the town and forest. We visited Barcelona for a day and the Salt mines which was definitely worth a visit. I would recommend securing the WiFi with a password. Sara and Thomas were available if we needed them but otherwise we didn’t see them. We were bowled over by the size of the accommodation it was really superb. We enjoyed a great week here."

This was a very charming house in an interesting area of Spain. The owners were very friendly and welcoming. It would have been nice to have more information on the facilities in the house i.e. dvd player, video player and wifi. We could have taken some films with us, although there were a couple of films in English. Overall we enjoyed our stay."

Very nice and relaxing house. Very cosy with the wood burning stoves lit in the evenings. Plenty places to visit nearby, Talamanca village is truly lovely. The salt mines in Cardona worth a visit also. Artes town is also nice especially the old part of the town. Would recommend the house and the area. Paul"

Great place. Really quirky. Had everything we needed. Excellent location - easy to walk into town and easy to get to other places by car. Lots of information left by owners. Pool is small and definitely 'eco' but we were fine with that. Lots of mosquitoes! but Sara provided repellent."

A semi rural setting within walking distance of the town. Sara and Thomas are affable and accommodating hosts. We were made to feel very welcome. They have done an excellent job in turning this part of their home into a very attractive, spacious and functional apartment with excellent views across toward the mountains (although the trees near to the building are now partially almost obscuring the view). We very much enjoyed our week there... Everyone in our group was able to gain from the experience; our dog Rudy loved rummaging around the nearby walks. Our grandson Oscar enjoyed the pool and the play caravan and his mum and dad were very happy that we, Micki and Chris, liked to cook most of the meals. (note to Thomas: It's hard to fault the place - so the small point that the cook's knives need sharpening and I couldn't find a sharpener/steel is hardly worth mentioning - but being thorough I know it will be done as soon as he gets feedback info)... The apartment is extremely well equipped with everything you might need and plenty of non-essentials too which others will enjoy even if if we didn't! Markets at Artés (Weds), Moia (Sunday) and Vic (Saturday) very enjoyable. Open air municipal swimming pool near Manresa. Lake/Walk/Restaurant at Graugés... all very enjoyable. I will be checking other Rustical properties on your website - maybe for next spring. You present everything very well. It's a great product that you offer to both owner and holidaymaker - Congratulations."

Rustical Update

The property managers have already been informed that the knives need sharpening.

A stunning property set in a gorgeous location nothing could have been improved upon. Sara and Thomas were so helpful in ensuring we had everything we needed even down to giving us a guided tour of Artes. The property itself is very well equipped, the kitchen has superb utensils, the bed so comfortable it was hard to get out of and we had the added surprise of WiFi being available in the living room. The veranda and garden are lovely, with the Eco pool providing a refreshing dip on a hot afternoon. There are amazing shops in Artes, a fantastic wine shop, several very good butchers as well as a supermarket so you don't need to travel too far for supplies if you don't want to. We certainly relaxed while staying here and hope to make a return visit one day."

We spent 2 fantastic weeks in Artes everything about this holiday was wonderful. I know folk, myself included read reviews with a little scepticism but I can assure you you will not be disappointed if you decide to visit. Thomas(mcivor) and Sara were brilliant hosts the loveliest of people. The house with all the wonderful carpentry and Sara's pretty touches makes for very cosy accomadation. Outside is natural and unspoilt with a unique wild pool surrounded by forest walks. Rustical travel provides a professional service which added too the whole experience. I look forward to returning soon, thank you Thomas and Sara. Martin Louisa meg and Thomas"

Suzie | July | 2016

Thomas and Sarah were great, a lovely welcome with some very thoughtful goodies waiting for us and a bowl with water already for our dog. The accommodation was very comfortable with everything we could possibly want (oh except a cheese grater....not really a problem). Had a bit of a problem with the washing machine not working but as we were only there for one week a bit of hand washing wasn't a problem and T S tried to get hold of a technician promptly. We loved sitting on the balcony for breakfast and in the evening, sunrise and sunset were magical. Loved watching the wildlife, birds and the little red squirrel that scampered up the wall every morning and the gecko performance every evening. There is obviously a public right of way that goes through the garden so it would be good to make it a little more private round by the swimming pond. Loved having a dip in the hot afternoon. Things outside the property's control were the early morning noise from the light industrial area, the dogs barking all night, and the motor bikes using the the road as a race track, but we live in a VERY RURUAL bit of France so we are perhaps far more sensitive to noise than most. Thank you"

Thank you for a super booking and holiday experience with Rustical Travel. We had a great time (too short) - the hosts were very helpful and the place was extremely well equipped. We had an incredibly relaxing holiday here. We absolutely loved the spacious, comfortable apartment with its wonderful hillside views. We spent the first few days just relaxing under the trees by the pool, and at night watching the two lizards catch moths above the doorway. It's a perfect place to unwind and get away from it all, with Barcelona and other attractions not too far away, and we found all the locals to be so friendly and welcoming. Our children loved the pool and the play caravan, and exploring nearby rivers. Thank you Sara and Thomas."

We enjoyed our week here very much. The house is very attractive with great views over countryside and nice walks in the woods next to the house. The eco-pool is great, and the hosts Thomas and Sarah are very helpful and friendly. There is plenty to do in the area, with Barcelona, Montserrat, Cardona and the Pyrenees all within fairly easy reach by car. Our only slight issue was that some of the local towns including Artes are a little dead in late July with many restaurants only opening at weekends which is a shame. A little further afield are more lively towns such as Vic."

This property is just absolutely beautiful inside and out!! You have a view of the mountains from the kitchen, diner and can get warm and cosey in the evenings in the living room while relaxing in front of the fire. My partner and I went with the grand parents and my one and a half year old daughter, who absolutely loved having the whole family in one place, and the rooms are separated by the living room and hallway so you are far enough apart from each other, so as not to be in each others pockets, and have some privacy. It was safe for my daughter as they have a gate on the stairs and I didn't even need to bring a travel cot, as every thing I needed for her was provided on request. But do take a car seat as car hire company's can charge a lot. A big thank you to Thomas and Sara for being fabulous host's."
