Overview

A favourite with our holidaymakers, who return here year after year, this property sums up what a lot of people ask us for in southern Spain:

A very private villa with a nice swimming pool and views
In a quiet countryside location not far from a pretty village and beaches
And the best possible Mediterranean weather...

Always of importance to us, we know we can count on the highly trusted owner to make sure the house and its guests are well looked-after.

What's more, the house is situated by ancient mountain pathways that eventually reach Granada. So there's more than just chilling out and swims in the pool and the sea: there's good hiking, too.

The villa is not luxurious –  modest in style, we'd say simply very correct, with complete and satisfactory facilities.

Neat, clean and summery, it's a very practical holiday home, with all the comforts and conveniences needed for your holiday in Andalucia.

There’s plenty of space indoors and outdoors, all very well presented and maintained. The look and feel is of relative modernity: there aren’t some of the rustic elements you often find at other Rustical Villas, but the location is genuinely rural despite being so near the sea.

There are three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a main room comprising lounge, dining area and kitchen. The lay-out is typically Andalusian open-plan, to suit the sunny climate.

The main terrace is very large and shaded for al fresco dining at a table for six people. Even the barbecue area is shaded so that the cook needn't get roasted as well. The barbecue is built-in and normally usable all summer long. It’s all nicely tiled and impeccably kept.

Once you step outside, the villa really comes into its own. The views range far and wide over the Frigiliana countryside, the foothills of the protected Natural Park of Almijara and out to the blue Mediterranean Sea. The nearest house is at a considerable distance, so the villa and its exterior spaces are very private to all intents and purposes.

Steps lead conveniently down to the pool area. The mosaic-tiled swimming pool is extremely inviting: we really did feel like a dip when we were there, looking out over the pretty seaside area. It is so relaxing here.

Parents coming with children will be interested to know that the pool area is enclosed and gated. The pool has a shallow end and is easily observed from the upper terrace.

The Axarquia location, not far from the boundaries of Granada province, is very rural and mountainous behind the house. This spot is known by the locals as “Four Ways” for the tracks and paths going to nearby villages: there’s lots to discover here. A particularly charming little village called Acebuchal is 1.5 km away, located in the depths of a green valley, where it is ranged around by impressive mountains. It’s a lovely place for walks and also for eating out, especially for non-vegetarians, as there is a good restaurant specializing in locally hunted game.

Another walk called Cuesta del Cielo takes you to up a mountain top where the views are superb: you even see the the snow on the distant Sierra Nevada.

The sea, of course, is always there in the background, and beaches at Nerja are just 8 km away. Less frequented and more natural beaches are only another 20 minutes’ drive. In addition to its popular beaches, Nerja has a remarkable cave complex well worth the visit. On certain nights of the year, orchestras play concerts in the caves.

Above all, the villa is a very quiet place, amidst scenery of pine forest together with exotic mango and avocado groves.

It comes priced for families or couples. We think the location and value for money are superb.

The principal local village of Frigiliana is home to a significant expatriate community. It has several good bars and restaurants to choose from, as well as providing all shopping and other facilities you might require.

I am writing to say what amazing holiday we had through Rustical Travel. As a family of 4, with children aged 1yrs and 5yrs, this was the first time we had had a villa, always going for 'all inclusive' before for convenience. Right from the start I was impressed with Rustcal Travel's professionalism. Always answering my emails on the same day which made the booking experience stress-free and personal. The villa itself was absolutely stunning and to be honest the pictures didn't do it justice. It was spotless clean and had everything we could ask for or need. The location was amazing, truly rural and quiet but just a short drive to amenities. We wouldn't hesitate to book through Rustical Travel again. Thank you"

We have spent many holidays in other villas near to AX23 and this was our second holiday iat AX23. A beautiful position and lovely villa. Antonio is a lovely man and although he doesn't speak English we manage to communicate well in our own way. There is only one problem that I would say and that is when it's hot the fans that are provided are very noisy.....we brought our own fan last year and we leave it with friends so we can use it every time we return 8-).....other than that we love it !!!! We have already booked up for 2019 ! Best regards"

A thank you to both Rustical and Montse for flexibility with both our arrival dates and times. The villa is well laid out and equipped with everything we needed - mozzies were a pain for the first few evenings but less so as the week went on. Other than the thunder storm and rainy day, we enjoyed the pool every afternoon and walked most mornings. Some wonderful walks above the village of Acebuchel, and further afield beyond Competa, just wished we'd brought better maps with us. Owners were charming, despite our rubbish Spanish! For our personal preference we would try and stay further from the coast next time, but if wanting best of both this villa is ideal."

On arrival at Frigliana we were met by the friendly manager Montse and taken to the villa as arranged. It was cold and raining but a fire was laid and a very welcome basket of snacks and bottle of delicious wine made up for that! The next day the sun was shining brightly and weather was perfect for the rest of the week. We enjoyed a very comfortable stay in the very clean and well equipped villa. We were particularly impressed by the position and gardens of the villa, perfect for walks and relaxation. The view from the terraces was wonderful and unforgettable. We would not hesitate to recommend this property to others and are grateful to Rustical Travel for their suggestion of it for a winter break. We felt that Rustical Travel kept us informed at every stage of our booking and are a well run and professional organisation. We shall certainly use them again and in fact have already booked the same villa for later in the year."

Donna | July | 2016

We had a great holiday here near pretty Frigiliana. Our hosts were very welcoming, the villa was more spacious than we expected and the terrace and the pool was well used by us 2 adults and 2 teenagers. The weather was terrific. We visited Nerja and Maro beach as well as the amazing Alhambra Palace. The short walk from the villa to the rebuilt close by hamlet (sorry forgot the name) was a pleasant stroll with well earned refreshments. The help from Rustical Travel, the villa (the pool) and the local attractions all lived up to expectations. I only wish we had stayed for 2 weeks and not 1! Thank you"

We have a great time staying at AX23. Antonio and Montse were a great help. We had to use a translation app on our phones to overcome our mutual language barrier but still managed to sort what needed to be done with the water pump when it developed a fault. The area's really nice with some challenging roads and Montse was kind enough to provide us with a couple of numbers (I think one was the same as one that you provided too) for local taxis. We used both taxis to get to Frigiliana, which was lovely on an evening.I found quite a few really nice walks from the villa, on the edge of the national park but didn't feel quite safe enough (because of the roads) to go mountain biking. The villa had everything we needed and was more than adequate for our needs. Our only gripes were to do with the technology side of things - in order to have something for the kids to entertain them at the hottest part of the day, we could have done with better internet access as it was really slow, to the extent that most things timed out or couldn't even connect. Also, the tv didn't have much in English although we found a few Discovery channels that were in English, subtitled in Spanish, so that helped. This isn't something that would have stopped me from booking it if I'd known before though. All in, we had a great time and found the relatively close proximity to Nerja was great. Everything you need is nearby but this is a break that shouldn't be attempted without a car for the duration.
