Overview

Q. Where are the most impressive sandy beaches in southern Spain?

A. On the Costa de Luz, west of Gibraltar and along the coast from Tarifa. Long, broad and golden and free of the high-rise apartments that blight the Costa del Sol.

Here, in an area where tourism is more low-key, our choice takes the form of a rural hideaway. It’s 20 minutes from Tarifa, which has superb sandy beaches popular with bathers and especially windsurfers.

Disappear from the motorway and slip down a track though cork oak forest towards the coast. Your holiday accommodation is set in massive, secluded gardens high above the Strait of Gibraltar. The 12-metre infinity pool (shared with up to two other cottages) and views are tremendous.

Here you can enjoy a very peaceful pool holiday, watching the ships go by, with trips out to the sea and the sandy beaches at Tarifa and along the coast towards Cadiz represent the prime attraction at this southernmost tip of sunny Andalucia.

RD35 is a one-bedroomed villa for two people. There are two other cottages of similar size in the estate.

It’s bright, cheerful and gives directly onto the gorgeous gardens that make the property so pleasing.

Luminous thanks to large plate windows on two walls and cooled by ceiling fans if need be, it’s an intimate and uncomplicated place to enjoy as a holiday base. The living space is open plan with a small but properly equipped kitchen. Classical prints decorate the walls.

Eating in here or on your furnished terrace is really very cosy and many guests alternate between catering for themselves and going out to restaurants in the area (Moroccan, French, Mexican, Italian and traditional Spanish). Bear in mind that if you intend to eat out, you’ll need to drive back along the track to the highway.

You have a small but perfectly adequate kitchen for cooking meals.

The private, shaded porch terrace, screened off from the neighbouring cottage by a hedge, is a natural place to enjoy drinks, meals, or a barbecue, while the lawn spreading out in front of you offers oceans of space to arrange sunbeds.

The gardens may be shared by guests staying at the two other small cottages, but that means no more than two other couples, and the gardens so extensive that you can feel very much in your own space, if intimacy is your first consideration. One area of the vast lawn extending from the cottage terrace all the way down to the pool is private to your cottage to all intents and purposes, and there are quiet, shaded spots under trees or the pergola where you can be on your own.

The owner has created colourful gardens reminiscent of English landscaping. There are peach and fig trees, roses, clematis and agapanthus, with a special emphasis on scented plants. You can sit by a fountain in the shade of a Peruvian pepper tree or walk the springy lawn down past palms, cypress and jacaranda to the swimming pool.

The cool green, mosaic-tiled, infinity pool is positioned at the foot of the gardens, where it has an incredible view out over the sea and across to Morocco which is as close as it looks: just 15 kilometres of the Strait of Gibraltar plied by ocean-going liners and merchant ships.

To get here you come off the coastal highway and drive down a long (3 km) but well-maintained track through cork oak forest, passing occasional cows, to the private, secluded finca. You park directly outside and walk round to the garden entrance of your bungalow-style holiday home.

Similarly, to get to beaches and restaurants, you need to drive back up to the main highway and take your pick of heading towards Tarifa or Cadiz.

If you want more than a beach, and wind or kitesurfing isn’t your thing, you might try horseriding, take a trip out on one of the whale or dolphin-watching boats, visit Gibraltar, Roman Baelo Claudia, or Cadiz. You can also take the fast ferry (just 35 minutes) from Tarifa to Morocco to enjoy a day out in Tangiers.

Birdwatchers will appreciate the bird guide book left in the cottage for guests to spot and learn about the dozens of birds that inhabit or migrate the Strait of Gibraltar, including storks, grey herons, vultures and eagles.

The English-speaking Spanish owner –and her old dogs– live on site in independent accommodation.

This is a beautiful property. Stunning views across to Morocco. The pool and gardens are a haven of tranquility - perfect for unwinding. Lots of interesting places to discover in the vicinity, but this is a place to simply do nothing."

Dorota | September | 2018

We spent 2 weeks in September in RD35. Property is beautifully situated with the breathtaking view over the strait and Morocco in the distance. Beautifully designed garden and infinity pool are the highlight of the property. If you want to completely relax and enjoy peaceful surroundings this is the perfect spot. Cottage is rustic but it’s spaciuos and offers everything you need. Rafa the owner was a great host, we wouldn’t notice he was around until we needed him . We even got some lovely veg from his garden to cook and enjoy for supper. The property is very close to Tarifa however the dirt track to the main road became a nuisance after a week and we tried to have shopping done for a couple of days to avoid the trip. Overall a fantastic experience a perfect retreat and we’d certainly consider coming back. Dorota Ian, Ireland"

Anne | April | 2017

The property was great: lovely little cottage with everything we needed and an amazing garden and pool area. Unfortunately the weather wasnt so great. The access road is really quite bad, thats worth mentioning so people come in an appropriate car. The communication and information from Rustical travel was good. Rafa the house keeper was also very helpful"

Rustical Update

It is indicated in the Location tab that the road to access the property has some dips for drainage and it is manageable with a normal car with reasonable clearance (but not low-slung sports cars).

Fabiola's garden was simply beautiful and a real bonus for me as a Garden Designer. Her attention to detail is excellent - we really appreciated the extremely comfortable bed, the exquisite linen, the excellent internet access - it even worked outside on the patio!Nothing was too much trouble - if we needed firelighters, to use her laundry room - everything became available without my having to ask again. The only negative was the long, bumpy and dusty track - you can't afford to forget the milk! It is definitely worth getting some shopping done before you arrive because once you get there you won't want to leave again! To be fair, it is probably my fault for not reading the literature properly. The pool was quite beautiful and a perfect temperature. Despite the fact that we had to share it with other people, everyone was very discreet and no-one monopolised it.As for the views over Africa - they were simply breath-taking.

Hilary | April | 2015

A beautiful property in an exquisite setting with friendly owners on hand for any issues. We did have a problem with the internet but they moved quickly to address this as soon as possible and it was resolved. The accommodation was very clean and pleasant. The kitchen was a little basic. A microwave would have made a big difference. The pool was lovely and the garden fantastic and very tranquil. Just what we needed. The approach road was a challenge and we would advise that you tell future renters to ensure they have an SUV or All Road vehicle. Your arrival directions were helpful but we have also discussed with the owners about additional signage at one point. Tarifa was lovely with a wonderful beach and a fascinating old town."
