Overview

When you’re driving along the main coast road from Tarifa at the southern tip of Andalucia, the views on their own (never mind the warm climate) may make you want to pull off and find somewhere to stay. The sea looks very tempting and you can see Africa, as clear as daylight, over the Strait of Gibraltar.

Well, here’s just the place. You trundle down a long but well-maintained track through pretty groves of cork oak, passing occasional cows, to a private, secluded estate with masses of gardens.

And at the end of the gardens is a swimming pool with one of the best sea views in Spain: straight over the sea where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic to the Rif Mountains in Morocco.

The largest of three one-bedroomed holiday cottages (see also RD34 & RD35), it offers simple charm and the opportunity to combine a peaceful pool holiday, watching the ships go by, with the opportunity to discover Tarifa’s beaches and why it's famed for some of Europe’s best windsurfing and kitesurfing, ride a horse along the beach, go out on one of the whale or dolphin-watching boats, or explore the coast line to visit Gibraltar, Roman Baelo Claudia and the long golden sands of the Atlantic.

You can also take the fast ferry (just 35 minutes) from Tarifa to Morocco and enjoy a day out in Tangiers.

Moroccan and French influences mean interesting restaurants in the area, in addition to Mexican, Italian and traditional Spanish. Just bear in mind that if you intend to eat out, you’ll need to drive there.

When you pull up at the garden estate, you are welcomed by the owner, and possibly her ageing (non-barking) dogs, who will show you to your accommodation, very close to where you are parked.

RD33 is a one-storey cottage with plenty of natural light in its open-plan design.

The bathroom is large and complete, classically stone-floored like the rest of the cottage.

Outside you have a private patio with a barbecue, screened from the driveway by a trellis grown over with morning glory. There’s exterior illumination here and also on the private roof terrace overlooking the lawned gardens.

From the roof terrace (although not from the cottage windows) you can see ships plying the channel between Europe and Africa and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in Morocco is clearly visible: the sun often glints reflected in the windows of the houses across the sea.

Birdwatchers, knowledgeable or not, will appreciate the bird guide book left in the cottage for guests to spot and learn about the dozens of birds that inhabit or migrate the Strait of Gibraltar, including storks, grey herons, vultures and eagles.

People staying here spend a lot of time out of doors. The owner has created extensive, colourful gardens with secret corners reminiscent of English landscaping. There are peach and fig trees, roses, clematis and agapanthus, with a special emphasis on scented plants.

You can sit by a fountain in the shade of a Peruvian pepper tree or walk the springy lawn down past palms, cypress and jacaranda to the swimming pool, which, like the gardens, may be shared with guests at one of the other two little cottages.

The cool green, mosaic-tiled, infinity pool is positioned at the foot of the gardens, where it has an enormously impressive view over the sea. You can sit in the shaded garden pergola with cold drinks and lap up the Andalusian lifestyle.

I had the most wonderful week staying here in this marvellous part of Andalucia. The property has wonderful views looking towards Morocco from a fabulous garden and wonderful walks from the door to the beach the coast. the house is quite isolated along a country track which was perfect for me. The owners couldn't have been more helpful over any help that I needed I think of them as new friends. Another perfect holiday with Rustic Travel!"

A fantastic cottage in glorious surroundings. Quiet and off the beaten track, situated at the heart of a nature reserve. An ideal base to explore what is a wonderful part of the world. Clean and well maintained, both inside and outside in the stunning gardens. A lovely pool with an amazing Straits of Gibraltar backdrop provides the scene for lazy afternoon relaxation. Pleasant, helpful owners saw to it that we wanted for nothing. Would I stay there again? Absolutely. Most definitely. Would I use Rustical Travel again? When traveling to Spain they will be my first port of call. Book with confidence and enjoy..."
