Overview

The location is perfect for combining a quiet rural holiday stay with Galicia’s most fascinating city.

Within its own gated garden grounds, the converted millhouse is totally private. The surroundings are wooded countryside and a clean stream still flows through the gardens and under the old building, which has been completely renovated as self catering accommodation.

And yet you only need to stroll 10 minutes from the hillside hollow, where the house is hidden away, to find yourself in the old town in central Santiago de Compostela. The historic quarter of Galicia’s famed pilgrimage town, bringing you the cathedral square and the twists and turns of its alleyways, is a pleasant and easy walk away, past an oak park and the University Campus.

This is one location where you can manage without a car. As long as you're planning to spend your holiday between the villa and the town, then you may wish to forget about hiring a car, take a taxi from Santiago Airport, and then walk to and from town and a nearby supermarket.

On a terrace above the house, with pretty views across the countryside, is a lawned swimming pool. Private parking is on the same level as the pool and one walks down a short slope to enter the millhouse via a covered, furnished terrace. This looks out over a garden and a clean river, flowing gently by.

The house retains its rustic quality in wood beams and stone walls, while its facilities have been modernized to accommodate a party of up to ten people.

The downstairs living room is solidly furnished and there’s a fireplace for log fires if it gets chilly, although the entire house is also centrally heated.

A kitchen and breakfast room has an electric cooker and two ovens (electric and microwave) as well as an old wood-fired hearth. An outside barbecue provides yet another cooking option.

You might like to take breakfast in a glassed-round conservatory, whose sliding doors open to a quietly running stream, a neatly kept lawn and the bank of the hillside. Meals and relaxation in this garden are the order of the day: a good barbecue facility is supported by a choice of soft and sturdy seating and sunshades.

The property has 5 well-furbished bedrooms and only 2 bathrooms for up to 10 people. We'd have liked more but nonetheless, following some impressive refurbishments in 2013, we decided the villa deserved inclusion in our collection of Luxury Villas in Northern Spain.

Pride of place outside goes to the superb swimming pool area. It’s a good size (8 m x 5 m) pool and the views are very pretty. It's set apart from the house on a higher, grassy bank.

There are lawns and gardens on different levels, the property verges on countryside, trees all around, and the sensation is more rural than suburban. If you leave the windows open on a warm night, the soft sound of the stream below is sure to lull you to restful sleep.

Until we walked it, we found it hard to credit that we were only ten minutes' walk from central Santiago, and a pleasant stroll it is, too.

Santiago de Compostela is one of Spain's top destinations. The cheerful, animated small city is used to receiving visitors from all over the world, in particular pilgrims, many of whom have walked for days along the well-trodden routes of the Camino de Santiago to reach the Cathedral of St James. This 12th century monumental building houses what are believed to be the bones of the St James the Apostle. The cathedral is on a vast square in the old town, the Plaza de Obradoiro, near which there are countless interesting corners, squares, museums and churches to discover.

You're in Galicia, so expect splendid food, especially fish and seafood. Galicia’s white wines are the best in Spain and Tarta de Santiago is the city’s sweet speciality, an almond tart not unlike a Bakewell.

For eating at home, we recommend fresh produce from Santiago's impressive market.

Twenty-five minutes from the city are the Noia and the Muros estuaries, where starts the famed Costa da Morte (Coast of Death), so named for the many shipwrecks on its rocks over the centuries. Noia and Muros are two of the several river estuaries which crenellate the dramatic coastline and give the region its unique landscaping.

Here you will find sandy beaches, fishing villages and a zesty Atlantic Ocean. You can enjoy swims or drive out to the land's end at Finisterre and its lighthouse.

Sebastian | July | 2023

We loved it, but the damp is a challenge, not a surprise for a millhouse perhaps but the 2 dehumidifiers we found under the stairs were full of water and had to be emptied twice a day. It would have been better to have flagged this ahead of time than on day 3 when it was becoming extremely damp and we found them."

Rustical Update

Julio, the property owner, informed us that this particular week was particularly wet in the region. However, he informs us that he will inform guests about this when the weather conditions indicate so.

The Millhouse was wonderful, a really unique setting. Very relaxing by the river. The weather was mixed with some very impressive thunder storms but had a great time regardless and we managed to get into the pool every day. The owners are lovely and very helpful. To have such a lovely villa within walking distance of the town is a big bonus."

Gordon | June | 2022

I’m afraid that our stay was coloured by the fact that it rained consistently every day of our stay and was cold, sometimes only 12C, which was not the fault of the house but it meant we could not use the pool and it was very cold in the house. If it hadn’t been for the log burner in the main room we would have been cold our whole stay. The house itself is very nice and well equipped but we could not use any of the outdoor seating areas due to the rain. The wifi was good and we had no problems with it. We felt it would have have been very crowded if it was a full house and we were stuck inside because of rain but as there were only four of us it was fine. It’s a 15 minute walk to the town. It isn’t the easiest place to find at first and you are confronted by black metal gates so you need to let them know when you will arrive. I would just say again that my review is coloured by the weather and if it had been good I would have left a better review."

The villa is in a beautiful setting, really well situated within easy walking distance of the old town. I feel some information would be helpful at the villa, perhaps a map to help aid visitors when they arrive, also details of nearest supermarket. The exterior of the villa is beautifully maintained with lots of different areas for al fresco dining if you are lucky with the weather. The swimming pool was lovely and relaxing and all seems very private although there’s a public footpath and neighbours you are still very secluded. The WiFi was excellent, beds very comfortable and very spacious. Really enjoyed our weeks stay"

Rustical Update

We have been informed by the property manager that there is a Housebook with local information, but maybe wasn't able to locate it. They confirmed they will leave it in a more visible place.

Lovely house for a family holiday. We were a party of 9 (grandparents, teenagers and friends). We were all able to spend the days as we pleased (walking, shopping, swimming.,sightseeing etc) and could reunite around the kitchen table/ bbq in the evening. The house is next to a Camino path by the river and only a short walk into town."

Rustical Update

We are informed the Camino path nearby is approximately 600 metres away from the property, so it isn't overlooked by the path and the privacy is not compromised.

Amazing property, gardens exquisite and beautifully maintained. The kitchen fully equipped and the rooms comfortable; although bear in mind it is a former mill and has small windows, therefore quite dark inside. The walk into town takes about 20minutes up steep paths, high heels not recommended! The owner Julio on sight and available to answer any questions."

The mill cottage was beautiful, an idylic little oasis. The pool was great, though a little chilly for me, the children loved it. We had a couple of unpredictable issues while we were there, but they were sorted quickly and professionally. Only things we would suggest would be two sets of keys (one between two families was a logistical issue a couple of times) and a hand book with info about the house, facilities, appliances etc."

Rustical Update

We have been informed by the property manager that they do have a Housebook, but it might have gone unnoticed, so they will leave it somewhere more visible. Likewise, the manager usually provides a second set of keys when guests ask for this, but he said that no one requested it on this occasion.

We stayed at property AG16 9th-16th June. The day we arrived was extremely wet and rainy and we were met at the property by the owners sister. She was very helpful, met us on time after a quick phone call, and even offered to bring some of our party to the supermarket for supplies. All shops and supermarkets remain closed on Sunday so this was very helpful for us to get essential supplies, especially as we were travelling with young children. The property is very comfortable, well laid out. We were travelling with two 1 year old children. While there are areas of the house that we had to supervise mostly it was safe for them. The bedrooms were comfortable, only one bedroom was small. Easy to make cool and dark with shutters and curtains. Kitchen was well stocked with cooking equipment etc. There are lovely grounds around the property. It is amazing how quiet the area was when it is so close to the city. It wasn't too much of a problem for us as the weather wasn't great, but it's a bit of a shame the pool isn't closer to the house, but it is how the grounds are laid out. It was a fine pool, a little small but did the job. I wouldn't recommend the property to anyone with walking difficulties. The driveway isn't too long but it is quite steep. It was good exercise each day! We enjoyed our week at the property, we did not see the owner much but he was always at the end of the phone if we had any problems and he speaks good English. We would stay at AG16 again."

An absolutely restful and peaceful weekend in this amazing property. Set in extensive grounds with gardens on multiple levels it was a real haven for us. The owner lives in a bungalow on the site and was very helpful and friendly. An easy walk to the city which was surprising given that the house feels like it is out in the country. Some lovely walks nearby and an easy drive to other beautiful locations."

This villa is in a fantastic location, a short walk from the city centre, in a quiet residential area. The garden is a beautiful place to relax and the house is full of character with all the facilities we needed. The owners were friendly and helpful. We had a wonderful week in Santiago, which is full of historic interest, lovely restaurants and has a safe and friendly atmosphere. The weather was amazing and we would love to return here. It is worth noting that the walk from the house to the top of the drive includes steps and a steep hill, which would not suit anyone who has difficulty walking, Likewise, the walk into the city includes some uphill climbs."

This is a lovely house. Very clean and well-looked after and the owners are very helpful. The pool and grounds are lovely. It's also about 50metres from the Camino from Santiago to Finisterre, which is very pleasant. Food in Galicia is fantastic in all sorts of unlikely places. Santiago is a very pleasant city - people are consistently helpful and willing to communicate no matter how poor you think your Spanish or Galician is. It does rain in Galicia - best not to forget that. I would not recommend hiring a car here - you don't need it for the city - everything is a few minutes walk - and the one way system in the city is very confusing when you're driving. There is public transport or you can use organised tours to all the Galician sights. Unless you actually enjoy driving don't bother."

The MIllhouse garden villa was perfect for our group. It had more than enough space for what turned out to be seven of us. It is very accessible for the centre of Santiago and also for the camino. The owners were extremely helpful and accommodating (we didn't to ask for assistance very much but when we did they were more than happy to give this). The one thing we felt there should be more of is larger cups/mugs for tea/coffee otherwise we were very happy with the millhouse and thoroughly enjoyed our stay."

Beautiful house in a fantastic setting. Walking distance from city centre yet feels like you are in the middle of the countryside when you are in house/gardens. Very narrow road for about 30 metres in the approach to the house did not suit our very large people carrier / van, but would not be a problem for a regular sized car. The owner's son Juan, was regularly around the place and he really helped us have a great holiday with his assistance and advice. We would have no hesistaton in recommending this holiday home."

Gillian | July | 2014

This property exceeded our expectations especially in regard to the extensive and beautifully maintained grounds, and the wonderful views from the swimming pool. The actual house is relaxing and comfortable and it is lovely to listen to the sounds of water running close by. Our party included 3 children aged 5 and 9 and they loved the freedom of being able to run around and play quite safely in the different garden areas. But undoubtedly the most amazing thing about this house is that one moment you are far away from it all in the peace and tranquility of the mill house yet within 15 minutes leisurely walking through the lovely university area, you are right in the centre of the most beautiful old city of Santiago di Compostela. The contrast never ceased to amaze us! It is truly the very very best of both worlds! Finally, the owners are welcoming and charming. What more could you ask? We all want to go back next year - if it is available - August 2015 already looks to be booked unfortunately."

When we eventually found the villa (the directions were not quite accurate in the final stages and didn't seem to take account of the one way system!) we were extremely pleased with our choice. The setting of the villa is amazing and so peaceful. It's difficult to believe that you are within easy walking distance of a city with some great restaurants, bars and free tapas! We had a lovely relaxing week and felt really settled in our peaceful and private space. Julio, the owner's son, lives at the 'top of the garden' and was on hand to help if needed and left us a very welcome bottle of wine to kick off our first evening at the villa - thank you!"
