We have long been admirers of Jimena de la Frontera and this is one of the nicest of the handful of holiday properties in the village.
Here, for your rustical pleasure, we have:
An authentically traditional house with its own pool and pretty views, in a very quiet corner of a lovely Andalucia village, where it is close to amenities and half an hour from the coast.
It’s located in the highest part of the village, where the views range across the Andalusian plains to distant mountains. We always think the views look much better when relieved of the sound of motor cars, and this spot is just perfect – on the traffic-free side of a large church square.
The broad square (see photo) also provides a safe place for children to run around and play. There's also play area for kids at the end of the square.
This house is about a peaceful holiday atmosphere distilled from tastefulness and thoughtful simplicity. It has the dignity of age and is neatly and tidily presented.
A reception room leads first to one sitting room, then to another. Ceilings are half-timbered with brick in the local style, floors a ruddy terracotta and furnishings, sofas and rugs, are a rich red that go very well with the rooms.
Open archways divide the sitting rooms and a dining room.
An open fireplace and a woodburner keep it all toasty and welcoming in winter months, and firewood is included (there are also gas and electric heaters for instant heat). A downstairs convenience is a welcome extra.
The kitchen and breakfast room is painted in a pale blue wash. It opens to a walled patio garden, from where the swimming pool is reached down a few steps.
The swimming pool is in constant sun and people normally sunbathe just above it, although there's space also for a couple of sunbeds next to it. The pool can be gated for child-safety. It has steps down, blue mosaic decoration and is not overlooked.
The main living room has French windows out to the same rear garden, where a dining table offers another very pleasant spot to eat, outdoors. You also have a barbecue.
The two bedrooms (a double and a twin) are upstairs, connected by a landing. The staircase is not bannistered (see photo), and while it is not treacherous, care should definitely be taken with toddlers.
Both bedrooms have en suite bathrooms and a balcony. The double room looks out over the church square, the twin room over the garden patio and the hills. It's worth noting that the twin bedroom has an open archway (instead of a door) to its bathroom.
There’s also an upstairs terrace, shaded with brushwood, with even better views, and a day bed for dreamy siestas.
We liked this soothingly restful and well-cared for village house. It’s all nicely distributed, and decorated with a certain gracefulness: not plush, simply genuine.
That the accommodation comes well equipped in terms of WiFi internet, satellite TV and DVD rounds it off very satisfactorily.
Jimena de la Frontera is similarly good-looking. Whitewashed streets, sporting colourful bursts of bougainvillea or scented jasmine, wind around and about its hilly foundation. Pride of place goes to the ruined Moorish castle, which is just a stroll from your holiday home and fun to explore.
Shops, café-bars and restaurants are all near at hand. Good restaurants they are, too, often offering a well-priced, three-course lunchtime menú.
There is also a rather good open-air, public swimming pool that opens for the summer months an another at a nearby campsite that's open in June and September.
Jimena is an unhurried place with a natural feel. There’s another square by a leafy park, and the river down below has some deep pools for dips and a variety of wildlife, including birds, otters and mongeese. Depending on the time of year, you may see significant numbers of birds passing overhead in the sky, as Jimena is on the migration route from Africa.
The village is encompassed within the vast Alconorcales (cork oak) Natural Park, where you can ramble to your heart’s content.
It’s also well-placed for days out. Popular choices are the prehistoric cave paintings at the Laja Alta Cave, the pretty drive to Gaucin village, golf at coastal courses, beaches both Mediterranean and Atlantic, Gibraltar, and even Morocco, which can be visited on a day trip from Tarifa.
Ronda is another favourite. If you don’t fancy driving, you can take the train. There’s a narrow gauge railway from Jimena (the station’s just outside the village) to Ronda that everyone likes. Trains also go to Gaucin and Algeciras.

-The staircase is not bannistered and care should be taken with toddlers.
