The white village of Grazalema (see Grazalema map and guide), in the western Andalucia province of Cadiz has a special reputation as one the most beautiful in Spain, enhanced by a secluded location within its own Natural Park, an area of outstanding beauty. Grazalema has real charm, a very relaxed village with a good variety of restaurants and bars with terraces. It lies in pride of place at the heart of protected parkland.

A short drive (2 km) from Grazalema village, this cottage with private pool sits alone, a short way down from the country road, where it is surrounded by a rugged terrain safe for children to play and explore.

Grazalema is well-known in Spain for its wool, especially prized by horse owners in the form of fine ponchos and blankets. In bygone days, this house was a dyers cottage where the finished fabric was given colour. Although it now has a quite different use and the property has been restored, the traditional character remains evident in the unadorned style and decoration.

We consider the property to be a little austere for winter lets, but from spring to autumn it’s an interesting and well-priced, if not outright cheap, option for anyone wanting to be in Grazalema with privacy and a swimming pool.

The large cottage has two rustically simple but spacious floors with a double and a twin bedroom and a bathroom on each. A high-ceilinged living and dining area with large open fireplace downstairs is matched by a large sitting room upstairs, which overlooks the downstairs area from a gallery. The kitchen and the house in general is perfectly adequately equipped for a normal holiday stay.

The house is set in a bouldered landscape with olive and fruit trees. It has an alpine feel domesticated only by the sun and the presence of Mediterranean vegetation. Children can run wild here. A 20-minute walk along a nearby path provides a shortcut to the village: a pleasant alternative and a handy one if you don’t want to drive back from Grazalema at night, for instance, but remember to bring a torch.

The swimming pool and its natural surroundings are very enjoyable. The pool’s a good size (7 m x 4 m) and there are loungers to relax and soak up the sun.

Visiting the attractive village of Grazalema is always a pleasant experience. They’re used to catering to visitors and you’ll soon find your favourite cafés or restaurant. The local cheese is a speciality and the delicious asparagus gazpacho is unique to the area.

Grazalema Natural Park is a marvel with a rich biodiversity, for us, this is one of the most interesting and satisfying natural areas of Andalucia. The green and rocky landscape offers some of the best treks and walks we have discovered in Southern Spain, its gentle yet craggy slopes invite ramblers of varying fitness to roam and explore.The Garganta Verde walk being particularly popular, but there are plenty of others. You can also delve into Grazalema’s secret subterranean limestone world of rivers and lakes at the Cueva del Gato (Cat Cave) – but if you want to go far in, it’s advisable to explore with a local guide.

For excursions by car, apart from the opportunity to get to know other Pueblos Blancos (white villages), historical Ronda is just 30 minutes away.

A choice of four Andalusia airports within a radius of 2 hours represents a good transport network for this unspoilt natural location.
