The white village of Grazalema (see Grazalema map and guide), in the western Andalucia province of Cadiz has a special reputation as one the most beautiful in Spain, enhanced by a secluded location within its own Natural Park, an area of outstanding beauty. It has real charm, a very relaxed place with a decent variety of restaurants and bars with terraces. It lies in pride of place at the heart of the protected parkland: a great choice for a walking holiday.
A short drive (2 km – and there's a footpath as well) from the village, this farmhouse with private pool sits alone below a quiet country road, where it is surrounded by an extensive and rugged terrain. It's private and it's safe for children to play and explore. The pool is gated.
This self-catering accommodation a very well-priced option for anyone interested in a holiday exploring Grazalema, wanting a home with complete privacy in the countryside, and a nice swimming pool.
The large cottage has two rustically simple but spacious floors and on each floor you have a living room, two bedrooms and a bathroom.
In bygone days, this house was a dyer's cottage where the finished wool was given colour. Grazalema is well-known in Spain for its fine ponchos and blankets, especially prized by horse owners. Although restored for a quite different use, the property's traditional character remains evident.
We found it somewhat spartan for winter lets and weren't convinced that the house heats up well, so we only offer it during warm months.
The house is set in a bouldered landscape with olive and fruit trees. The feel is of an alpine hillside that has been domesticated by the sun and the presence of Mediterranean vegetation.
There's oceans of outdoor space and children can run wild and free here. A 20-minute walk along a nearby path provides a shortcut to the village: a pleasant alternative and a handy one if you don’t want to drive back from Grazalema at night, for instance – although remember to bring a torch.
The swimming pool and its natural surroundings are very enjoyable. There are loungers to relax and soak up the sun.
Visiting the village of Grazalema is always a very agreeable experience. They’re used to catering to visitors and you’ll soon find your favourite cafés or restaurant. The local cheese is a speciality and the delicious asparagus gazpacho is unique to the area.
As for Grazalema Natural Park: it's a marvel with a rich biodiversity. For us, this is one of the most interesting and satisfying natural areas of Andalucia. The green and rocky landscape offers some of the best treks and walks we have discovered in Southern Spain, its gentle yet craggy slopes inviting ramblers of varying fitness to roam and explore.
The Garganta Verde walk is particularly popular, but there are plenty of others. There are caves and natural caverns below the surface: you can delve into Grazalema’s secret subterranean limestone world of rivers and lakes at the Cueva del Gato (Cat Cave). If you intend to venture far in, though, it’s advisable to explore with a local guide.
For excursions by car, you have the opportunity to get to know the other Pueblos Blancos (white villages), and historical Ronda is just 30 minutes away.
A choice of four Andalusia airports within a radius of 2 hours represents a good transport network for this unspoilt natural location.
