To enter from the village street in Pitres is to pass from the simple to the splendid. A voluminous hallway with original high ceiling leads to a pool area created in the image of a Moorish hamman bath: a naturally lit interior patio, filled with plants and a small, inviting pool, water jets shooting through reflections of the sunlight.

A corner with cushions has been prepared for stretching out on lazy afternoons. Drinks can be brought over from the adjacent bodega, originally a wine cellar where local people pressed their grapes, its Bacchanal character has been carried over in its reincarnation as a bar for enjoying a glass or two in an atmosphere of old Spain. With beautiful old furniture and decoration, it confirms the house as a class act in this modest, traditional mountain village.

The upper floor is equally satisfying, a summer lounge leading onto a wide terrace filled with colourful plants. The terrace has all you might want and expect for outdoor living, sunloungers, sunshades, barbecue. There is a second sitting room with a wood-burning stove that is just the place for warm winter evenings. The bathroom area is unusual and imaginative, all skilfully tiled.
 
The accommodation is arranged around the internal patio, providing plenty of natural light. From a hall that links both lounges leads an open-plan kitchen and dining room, fully equipped for ten or more, with all the appliances and utensils you could possibly need for the most demanding cook. There is scope for catering for a special event, or simply enjoying an intimate dinner with numerous friends or family.

All the rooms have electric or gas heaters or an open fire, although do bear in mind that in winter the central patio and its hammam pool are not heated.
 
The location in the Alpujarran village of Pitres makes it a great base for discovering the area. Pitres is the head of La Taha district with six smaller villages to explore and get to know. These enchanting hamlets, dating back to Moorish times, are set together in great Alpujarra walking country. The popular Poqueira Valley is only ten minutes’ drive away. And if you are looking for unspoilt alpine terrain, you can follow trails from Spain’s highest village, Trevelez, 25 minutes in the opposite direction.
 
Pitres has less tourism than other villages in the area, and its rhythm of life is pretty much what it has always been, calm and unrushed. The main square livens up on Friday market day when its bars and terraces fill up, otherwise it’s a laid-back place to rest up after a day in the mountains. There is an excellent, large swimming pool with restaurant at a campsite very close to Pitres. During summer months it is open to the general public on payment of an entrance fee, and provides a very pleasant place to spend the day, sunbathing, swimming and having lunch on the restaurant´s terrace.
