The original barn door swings open to reveal the windowed façade of a lovely house dedicated to holiday lets, yet the atmosphere is very homely. Natural light illuminates the living area as you come in, and a grand old chest and comfortable sofa by the fireplace set the tone for the entire house, where old world charm goes hand-in-hand with comfort. Under the barn’s solid oak ceiling a dining area adjoins a modern but wood-beamed kitchen enclosed in glass. Having said which, those who like to dine out will find themselves in a locality where the opportunities are very good indeed. Roast sucking pig, lamb and goat are served in restaurants at walking distance in the little, genuine village of Alameda, set in a Madrid mountain valley.
The property is located at the foot of the village. It’s a perfectly peaceful spot. Walks starting here will introduce to a beautiful area where foreign tourism, at least, does not exist. A five-minute walk takes you to Lozoya River, where you can swim in the summer, and ten minutes away by car are the great pine forests of Navafria.
Outside the house is a patio furnished for barbecues, or relaxing in the sun, and to the rear a second, small patio allows sun into the kitchen. Inside, two old wooden staircases (please note that while the house has safety gates for children, the staircase steps are quite steep) go up to separate bedrooms with sloping wooden ceilings. Both the double and the twin-bedded room are en-suite.
This tastefully decorated house is available for holiday rentals all year round and the natural setting, together with central heating, makes it inviting for all seasons.
This region of Madrid has plenty offer to the visitor, with good treks starting from your front door. For a more alpine and higher experience, treks around Peñalara and Cotos Natural Park are our personal favourites, up to Peñalara peak at a respectable 2,500 metres altitude.
Then there are the pine forests of Navafría. When you drive up through the imposing old trees you pass from Madrid into Castile and another world.
The Sierra Norte and Sierra del Rincon are Biosphere reserves, mountain landscapes where you can get off the beaten track and visit little-known villages such as La Hiruela. The Hayedo de Tejeda, the southernmost beech woods in Europe are situated here. From the elegant, grey-stone Paular Monastery in Rascafria a beautiful forest hike takes you to the Morcuera pass or to the natural pools of Las Presillas.
The medieval village of Pedraza is less than 30 minutes distant and Madrid itself an hour and a quarter.
