With its gated pool, summer house, oceans of gardens and views of the estuary where it meets the sea, family holidays are a big success at this smart, well-maintained coastal villa. But it is also offered to couples who only require one of the bedrooms, at correspondingly reduced rates
Once a 16th century friar’s residence, the villa is completely renovated. Constructed of attractive local granite, it enjoys a privileged hillside location above the harbour town of Combarro. Surrounded by lush vegetation, you survey the wooded Pontevedra estuary (see Galicia map), one of the major rias baixas of Galicia.
We liked it for its smart upkeep, gardens, pool, views and location by the sea estuary. As we found the living room a touch on the small side and the kitchen is accessed from the outside only, we categorized the villa as a summer residence, where the accent is on outdoor living.
It has many qualities to recommend it, beginning with the location.
It’s very quiet here, in a rural neighbourhood of independent villas, and significantly warmer than the north of the region. Children will love the pool and masses of lawned, sloping gardens, while parents will like being easily able to keep an eye on proceedings from the raised villa or the nearby summer garden house: a large barbecue and drinks room. The pool is fenced all-round for safety.
An automatic security gate opens to a gravel drive with private parking. Two entrances to the house then take us into a separate well-equipped kitchen, or the living / dining room, which is comfortable if somewhat limited in capacity for six people.
The kitchen is independent from the rest of the house. Wooden stairs rise from the living room to the bedrooms, which are also accessed from an outdoor stone staircase: generally speaking, an easier and nicer way of getting to and fro.
There are three bedrooms, each double-bedded and one of them with an additional bed for a child. All bedrooms have an en suite shower/WC, TV (Spanish channels only), central heating and heated towel rails, and two of them have balconies.
The outside areas with the views and semi-tropical trees, date palm, orange and fig, make this into a very complete villa.
The rolling garden lawn is an open invitation to children to run and play, with the mosaic-tiled swimming pool below being the biggest draw. It’s fenced and gated for safety and has a splash pool for little ones. The salt-filter system makes it especially child-friendly: no need for sore eyes from chlorine.
Close by is an excellent, independent summer house with windows out to the pool and garden: the ideal place for getting together for meals and snacks. It has its own kitchen with barbecue and cooker and a covered porch with garden furniture.
The seaside town of Combarro lies just below. Here you will find shops, restaurants and the harbour where yachts and pleasure boats are moored. You can stroll along the quayside and enjoy drinks at a café terrace on the waterside.
Of definite interest for convenience and fresh victuals are local vans delivering bread, fresh fish and fruit, which all call by in the villa’s neighbourhood, a toot on the horn announcing their arrival.
The villa's owner runs a small, nearby hotel which offers bicycle hire and also has computers if you want to use internet at any time.
There’s a first-rate beach 15 minutes from the villa and exploring by car will bring you to many more sandy strands. Excursions are first rate from here: Santiago de Compostela, Portugal, the coast road, and Vigo for the boat over to the Cies Islands.
Vigo Airport is just 30 minutes away.
