Tomiño is a small, unpretentious town near the River Miño and the border with Portugal at Tui (see Galicia map). It’s a major wine-producing area for the famed white Albariño and Godello varieties, and from the house, which is located on a quiet country lane just outside the town, where the last houses dwindle into the green Galician countryside, you can walk down and cross a small river to see the grapes ripening in the sun.

It’s one of the warmest regions for holidays in Northern Spain, with opportunities to enjoy sandy beaches at La Guardia just 25 minutes away. Also in the area, you can visit the beautiful historic town of Tui or nip across to Portugal for a day out. It's a great area to enjoy quality seafood and other tasty Galicia specialities.

The house is one of a few lining a lane that is interspersed with gardens and orchards. It’s a very quiet neighbourhood, with just enough people so that you don’t feel isolated. The owner’s hospitable parents live next door and are on hand if needed, but otherwise restrict themselves to occasional offerings from their market garden.

The house, gardens and pool are all very spick-and-span.

From private, gated parking one enters a high-ceilinged living / dining room with leather sofa and armchairs. The floor is of smooth, polished red brick, the ceilings of wood and the stone walls left partly exposed for effect.

The quantity of sunlight that enters is the first thing we noticed.  A gallery wall out to the garden is composed entirely of ceiling-to-floor windows and sliding glass doors, allowing natural light to flood in.

The kitchen is well-equipped with dishwasher, no-frost fridge-freezer, oven, microwave and an old-fashioned (working) range.

Three bedrooms, each with a neatly-tiled shower room, are punctiliously presented, as is the rest of this extremely neat house. It’s a non-smoking environment, clean and fresh.

The property is all ground floor and there are no drops anywhere, so we consider it a good choice for families with toddlers, as long as an eye is kept on the pool, which is not gated.

It’s a pretty swimming pool, decorated in pale mosaic, a full 10 m by 4 m, with steps leading down into the water. A salt-filter system means it's chlorine-free, so kind on the eyes. The pool is surrounded by lawned gardens, planted with fruit trees, with plenty of room for children to play and there’s a swing, too. You’re not in isolated countryside here, so there are neighbours, but they are quiet and respectful local gallegos. A historic curiosity graces the gardens: an old stone grain store, built on stilts to keep out field mice!

To one side of the garden is a shaded area with garden furniture and barbecue for al fresco meals.

Five minutes’ walk from the house, down the lane, is a lawned play area for children, and from here the same distance brings you to a tranquil, leafy riverside area where you can picnic and even take a dip. It’s shaded by oak trees and little bridges cross streams to take you further in and down to a small weir. It’s here that you can see acres of wine grapes planted in long rows, as well as a hill (Monte de Ton) famous for its ancient petroglyphs, which you can visit.

The small river is clean and refreshing. A path runs along it all the way (8 km) to where it flows into the main River Miño: a lovely walk.

You can also walk into town from the house: ten minutes to the centre for shops, café-bars and typical local restaurants. A little further on there's a more atmospheric, rustic restaurant witha pub-style garden that is popular for evening meals.

There's also a cybercafé in Tomiño if you want to connect to internet during your stay, and the holiday property is covered by the 3G network so that enables connection to internet on a pay-as-you-use basis.

Recommended excursions include La Guardia, a pretty fishing port with fish and seafood restaurants looking out onto the harbor and nearby beaches; historic Tui; old, working water mills; and major beaches at Baiona.

Vigo Airport is an easy 40-minute drive and Santiago de Compostela and Porto in Portugal are good alternatives.
