An excellent choice for a family holiday, the accommodation is first class and the pretty valley has plenty to discover. The main conundrum that a place such as this presents is to decide where to explore next – or do you simply stay at home and lap up the peace and quiet and comfortable facilities?

Inland from Vigo on the Galicia coast and not from the border with northern Portugal, the valley’s microclimate ensures warmer temperatures and a dryer climate than Galicia’s north. The villa, superbly and newly restored, sits in a genuine, rural location that is walking distance from a good, welcoming bar/restaurant and easy driving to many points of interest.

From private, gated parking steps rise to a tiled terrace above the heated outdoor pool. The views are marvellous and the house built of light grey granite is very attractive.

One of the fiest things you notice when you walk in the fresh scent of pine from the extensive woodwork: very pleasant! A spacious country kitchen provides a cheerful focal point for the house with plenty of natural light from windows and skylights in a pine ceiling, into which halogen lights are neatly recessed. It’s a very smart kitchen with a stainless steel double oven and hob, large fridge-freezer and long wooden dining table.

The kitchen connects to a very pleasant, very comfy lounge with a log fire for winter nights in (the villa also has central heating throughout). It’s wonderfully sunny thanks to a wall of French windows that go out to an internal balcony with views. There’s a DVD (with a collection of movies), CD and satellite TV. There’s a mobile signal, but no internet: this rural area of Pontevedra has been promised broadband internet connection, but it hasn't arrived yet. In the meantime, there’s a friendly cybercafé in Covelo 10 minutes away.

From here there leads off a double bedroom with an arched pine ceiling and fabulous view across the valley from the bed itself. A small stone ledge by the window is a socio-historic curiosity, being originally intended as a seat where women would gaze out while sewing – you can see it was even purposefully positioned for right-handed needle movement. The en-suite bathroom has a skylight that makes for a very natural feel; bathrooms have heated towel rails and extractor fans.

An adjoining room has preserved overlapping stone slabs once used to dry root vegetables and fruit and links to a utility room, to steps down to the patio outside, and a staircase down to a en-suite twin-bedded room with a door out the front patio.

The other two downstairs bedrooms are reached from kitchen stairs.

One is an ample double room with an iron bedstead, en-suite shower and two windows (one looks onto the pool) in addition to French windows out to the patio. The other room has bunk beds, en-suite shower and also has a door out the patio. The lower bunk is significantly larger than the upper, and could sleep an adult while a child slept above, or two small children together. Parents, if they wish, can otherwise keep the door to the outside locked.

As an indication of intelligent design, one key fits all the locks in the villa. All windows are shuttered and double-glazed.

Also downstairs is a games room with a pool table, 3/4 size table tennis and darts. This room, too, has a low exterior door, out to a rear patio.

The swimming pool is, of course, a significant attraction. It’s heated (to 28⁰C), has a no-chlorine salt-filter system, is attractively mosaic-tiled and has both steps and a ladder. It also has lighting for night swims. There is space on the poolside for sunbathing and just up a few steps, a terrace with views and nighttime illumination where speakers can channel music from the CD.

Also here is an architectural curiosity: an old granite grain store dating from 1843. It makes for quite a nice look-out point just above the pool.

When you’re in a fairly remote country location, it’s important to know where to find local shops and facilities. Your stay will be characterized by all manner of delicious culinary options: you’re in Galicia now!

To begin with, the villa’s hospitable caretaker (who speaks several languages) will direct you to many places of interest. He also runs the local bar/restaurant, a 10-minute walk and visible from the villa. It’s always open, very hospitable and you can eat extremely well here. The hostess makes dishes of locally produced meat, all kinds of fish, and also home-made pasta: lasagna and cannelloni. There are supermarkets in Covelo and A Cañiza, but if all you want is basic foodstuffs, ask in the bar and they will probably be able to sell you them (bread is always available).

From Tuesday to Saturday, a van comes by the villa selling fresh fish and vegetables: simply go down when you hear it sound its horn. There a re a number of country restaurants with a few minutes' drive and we'll send you our recommendations as one of your holiday documents.

Near the villa is a river with natural pools where you can make a picnic barbecue and take a dip, while just 6 km away at Maceira is another, more developed riverside swimming area with a campsite café and shop. From here, you can continue up into the hills to visit the Aguia hermitage.

If it’s not too hot, then a variety of walks take you to the source of the River Tea, to the eolic park, to the highest hilly point of 1,150 m, a Roman bridge by a 60-metre waterfall, and the “Chozas”: these diminutive, stone shacks with hearths were once used for overnighting by herding families in the mountains to protection from wolves.

Another local excursion takes you to a natural spring of sulphuric waters – you follow a wooden railing down to the river to reach it – that Galicians swear by, saying it is good for the skin and also to drink (we had our doubts about the latter…).

You can also visit two architectural wonders. One is a church and rectory, a true work of art carved out of rock: extraordinarily intricate handwork curves out into the exterior walkway, some in the form of fleurs-de-lys. The other is the series of ancient water mills that are still in working order and that built one above the other, operating in cascade from a single gushing stream.

Those interested in Galician culture will enjoy the local museum in A Ermida that shows what the schoolhouse and barber’s were like in the 1940s, as well as the famous stone cross in Covelo: one of many that you will see in Galicia, set up at crossroads: we’ll tell you more and why in the detailed local information we send with your booking confirmation.

Horseriding is available locally, both for beginners and those who can already ride and golf at the much respected Mondariz course just 20 minutes away. Mondariz is also a very attractive spa town.

There is a local gastronomic fair at a local town every Saturday – and in Galicia food is a high point of any holiday stay – and twice a month a cheese fair in Cañiza, where you will also find municipal tennis courts and an indoor pool. If you want to try fairground octopus, cooked with art to tasty tenderness – it’s considered a profession in itself -- we’ll tell you where and when to be in order to try it.

The valley is fertile and fruit is everywhere here. From June to August there are grapes, peaches, plums, apples: if you ask, most local farmers will happily let you pick one or two to eat and enjoy.

The Samil beach at Vigo, over a mile of sand and sea, restaurants and activities, are 50 minutes away and the coastal drive from Vigo down to the pretty fishing town La Guardia is very attractive. At the River Miño estuary, there are views out over the Atlantic, which shows silver-copper in the sunset. You also have excellent beaches on the coast at Baiona and, on the Portuguese border, the historical small town of Tui is well worth a visit.

From Vigo, where you can buy fresh oysters, opened with a knife for you to eat on the spot at the market, a boat goes out to the gorgeous Cies Islands.

Santiago de Compostela, Galicia's beautiful cathedral town and pilgrimage destination, is also within day trip reach.
