The location is perfect for combining quiet rural holidays with Galicia’s most fascinating city. It's totally private. The surroundings are wooded countryside and a clean stream still flows through the garden and under the old millhouse, which has been completely renovated for tourism.
On a terrace above the house, with pretty views across the countryside, is a lawned swimming pool.
The house retains its rustic quality in wood beams and stone walls, while its facilities have been modernized to accommodate a party of up to seven people. Private parking is on the same level as the pool and one walks down a short slope to enter the millhouse via a covered, furnished terrace. This looks over a garden and a clean river flowing gently by.
The living room has a simply but adequately furnished and is equipped with satellite TV, DVD, CD player and wifi. There’s a fireplace for log fires if it gets chilly, although the entire house is also centrally heated. A kitchen and breakfast room has an electric cooker and two ovens (electric and microwave) as well as an old wood-fired hearth. An outside barbecue provides yet another cooking option. There’s a dishwasher for all the washing-up afterwards. A door leads out from the kitchen to a porch, whose seating faces the quietly running stream, a neatly kept lawn and the bank of the hillside.
There are four bedrooms, a double, two twins and a single, all on the first floor. If it's warm and you keep the windows open, the sound of the stream below is enough lull anyone to restful sleep. The bedrtooms share an upstairs bathroom and there’s another shower room downstairs.
The exterior areas comprise lawns and gardens on different levels, pride of place going to the superb swimming pool area. It’s a large (8 m x 5 m) pool and the views are very pretty.
Santiago de Compostela is a cheerful, animated small city, used to receiving visitors from all over the world, in particular pilgrims, many of whom have walked for days along well-trodden routes to reach the Cathedral of St James. This 12th century basilisk houses what are said to be the bones of the St James, the Apostle. It is situated on a vast square, the Plaza de Obradoiro.
You are in Galicia, so expect splendid food, especially fish and seafood. Galicia’s white wines are the best in Spain and Tarta de Santiago is the city’s sweet speciality, an almond tart not unlike a Bakewell.
50 Highlights of Holidays in Northern Spain
Twenty-five minutes from the city are the Noia and the Muros estuaries, where starts the famed Costa da Morte (Coast of Death, so named for the many shipwrecks on its rocks over the centuries). Noia and Muros are two of the several river estuaries which crenellate the dramatic coastline and give the region its unique landscaping. Here you will find strands, fishing villages and a lively Atlantic Ocean.
