We found this rural villa in a hamlet on the quiet inland roads south of Santiago de Compostela (airport 45 mins by car), where it is also easily reachable from La Coruña or Vigo airports (see Galicia travel info). It is set in five acres of private, fenced-off gardens.

The hamlet, 5 km from the village of Vilatuxe, captures the rural essence of Galicia and the house, with its stone walls and wood ceilings, is typical of the region. There are one or two other properties in the countryside area, but it is very private.

You enter directly to a large, quite formal, dining room, arched over a by a beamed ceiling and full of the light invited in by a wall of windows. Ferns and other healthy plants climb up the stone walls, emphasizing the natural feel of the place and there’s a door out to the back garden. You can also eat in a more intimate atmosphere at the old wooden table in the kitchen, which has marble work surfaces and a wood stove for indoor barbecuing, in addition to normal cooking facilities.

On the same floor are four bedrooms, two of which are en suite and two sharing a bathroom. Down a few stairs is a cozy living room, furnished in a classically rustic style, with an open fireplace for log fires.

On the lower level, the house has a studio apartment with two large sofa-beds, shower room and kitchenette that opens onto its own garden area with a covered barbecue. There are plenty of safe gardens for children to play, complete with a stone-built grain store: a historical local curiosity.

Your local hamlet is as quiet as can be, no shops or bars, just a bread delivery van. But there are shopping and other facilities just 5 minutes away in Vilatuxe and the area is well served by restaurants: some of the best beef in the whole of Spain, and in Meson O Cruce restaurant some excellent seafood.

After your meal, there are wonderful rambles in the Codesda and Botos areas, or relax by the riverside at Vilatuxe, where sunbathing areas have been created and swims in the river are possible.

 

The pilgrims’ destination of Santiago de Compostela will undoubtedly be high on your excursion list, and beaches are less than an hour away, too.

The Galicians are fond of their fiestas and your stay may well coincide with some food fair or other, where you can expect to be made welcome to join in.
