Rustical´s Review              See prices

This ground floor garden apartment forms part of the group of remarkable restored Abbey buildings to which cottage AG12 belongs, and the same, definitive, rustic stylishness is evident in the construction and presentation.

We consider this place so special, we've dedicated a short article to it. Do please read it as it will help you to understand what this Abbey accommodation and dependent buildings are all about:

Undiscovered Spain: Historic holidays: a Galicia Abbey

The prize-winning accommodation distinguishes itself from the penchant for turning old buildings into characterless modern flats. It has been fitted out with conveniences such as central heating that make life comfortable, yet the look and feel of the original rooms has been tastefully respected and the 18th century character evident throughout. A film set designer couldn’t ask for more authenticity.

The one-bedroom country apartment has a superficial austerity that is quite striking (and yes, we'd rather they had two armchairs rather than just one, although there is other cushioned seating), but the warmth of the rustic quality is extraordinary: you will probably find it quite unlike anywhere else you have stayed.

The cottage apartment is located separately in the gardens with its own porch terrace.

It has a double bedroom with a TV and DVD, nice bathroom and an open plan sitting/dining room with simple kitchen facilities. In addition to central heating, there's an open fireplace for log fires. It shares a utility room and the extensive, mature gardens of the abbey’s private grounds with AG12 and access to the apartment is through the gardens.

When it comes to exploring the local area, which is right by the Portuguese border – the other side of the river below the nearby village of Caldelas – there is enough to keep you contented for weeks. Besides which, this is the geographical region of green Galicia where you are most likely to have good weather.

You can swim in the river Miño and maybe try the local spa baths (both walking distance or an easy drive).

Tui, the delightful cathedral town 10 minutes away, is a lovely place to visit and en route to Portugal if you fancy a say out there. And if you feel like a longish (two-hour) walk there’s a lovely path all the way to Tui from the abbey.

Some 35 minutes away is La Guardia, one of the ports that make Galicia such a tremendous fish and seafood supplier for Spain. If you are there for 4 o’clock in the afternoon, you can witness the fish auction. The beaches and restaurants are recommended. Signposted on the way to La Guardia, there is circular route called Muiños do Folón, where you can see mills (the oldest of the nineteen date back to the 12th century) built in a cascade down the hillside to follow the heavy stream water.

Portugal’s beaches are a touch closer: try the white sand of Moledo de Miño beach… You can go on boat trips or go fishing. And if you don’t want to go that far, then swims in the clear local river Miño are definitely possible. In summer, there’s an excellent open-air riverside restaurant & bar.

Galicia is very keen on its fairs, whether for flowers, witchery (!) or food – but especially food. It’s a very natural and social way to enjoy barbecued sardines, Spanish omelette, octopus, with a glass of decent Galician white wine: this is albariño country and you will see the vines everywhere you go.
