Hidden away in green, restful forest, just a few minutes inland from the coast and pretty Atlantic beaches, this 3-bedroomed restored mill offers a very relaxing, natural setting.

For a holiday off the beaten track, yet close to Spain’s dramatic northern coastline, it’s an exciting choice.

The river mill is set in the heart of the famed Rias Altas and handy for Galicia beaches at Cariño and the tremendous cliffs that round the northern coast.

The capable Galicians look after their visitors well and a local family have put together this very acceptable, well fitted-out hideaway in the wooded countryside, 15 mins from full services in the pleasant coastal town of Ortigueira.

Ortigueira is famed for its annual international Celtic festival, when bands and singers from all over the world gather together with fiddle, pipe and drum.


Although it may feel like camping out in the woods, there’s no sense of roughing it here. The accommodation is comfortable and agreeable. After a day at the coast or tramping the paths through the woods, you can eat out on the outdoor terrace, or if it’s a chilly time of year, around the log fire.

The mill cottage has a simple kitchen and a cosy living room with a woodstove. Firewood and hot water are plentiful and not charged. You have a TV (Spanish channels only) and CD player. There’s also a barbecue.

There are three bedrooms and three woodstoves.

A double-bedded room downstairs and a twin-bedded room upstairs each has an en-suite bathroom.

In addition, a smaller twin-bedded room without a bathroom offers extra sleeping room; this room is perhaps best suited to children, as guests here need to share bathroom facilities with one of the two main bedrooms.

The mill cottage is reached down a short track from private parking. There is a modest hamlet nearby, wild swimming possible in the river, also stables to hire horses and a birdwatching observatory.

Here you are close to the Ortigueira estuary and Galicia beaches and the tremendous cliffs that round the coast. The coast is breathtaking and some of its sandy beaches lie at the foot of the highest cliffs on the European continent.

For swims, we recommend Fornos beach at the prettily named Cariño (“fondness” or “darling”).

At the FEVE light railway station 500 metres away, a local train occasionally stops to pick up passengers and continues all the way to Ferrol.

Some excellent restaurants serving fresh seafood and fish are 15 to 20 minutes away in Espasante and Cedeira.

First floor: entrance to kitchen with dining table; steps down to living room; double-bedded room with en-suite bathroom (bath/WC); old mill room with access to totally private terrace; stairs to second floor.
Second floor: twin-bedded room with sofa and en-suite bathroom; hallway leads to reading room (overlooking main living area) and twin-bedded room with sloping beamed ceilings: please note that guests sleeping here need to share bathroom facilities with one of the other two bedrooms.

-Parents should note that the proximity of the river may make this property unsuitable to families with small children.
-The use of the washing machine in the exterior utility room is shared with a neighbouring mill 60 metres away.

By the edge of small hamlet of Mera, by the river and surrounded by nature. There are no services in the hamlet, apart from one bar that opens sporadically.
