A completely independent country property, this is an ideal place from which to explore and discover the joys of being in Asturias. We’ll come to the facilities in a moment, but first let’s just take a look at the view……
That’s the Natural Park of Ponga, contiguous with the Picos de Europa, offering not one but two amazingly spectacular driving routes that go as far as the Forest of Piloño, one of the best preserved forests of Europe. Ponga is one of the only areas in where the brown bear, with its strong preference for a forested habitat, still lives as Asturias’ most respected (and protected) denizen.
The cottage is surrounded by private meadows, backing onto a quiet country lane and with a private drive to the front. Children can run and play in the meadows to their hearts’ content. The horses one occasionally sees belong to the same vast estate (over 600 acres) as the house, and horseriding is one of the several activities that can be arranged with the property manager, who is on hand during your stay.
Here you are in the folds of the Sierra del Sueve, the high Natural Park that rises up close to the Asturias coast and presents you with some great hiking opportunities. You can walk from the house itself to the Alto de Llama (Llama Pass) in 20 minutes and continue from there to Espinares with views of the sea.
Entrance is from a shaded porch, furnished for sitting outside and enjoying the natural peacefulness of this privileged location. The house is comfortable for four people, with a homely living room and smallish but properly equipped kitchen, which extends into the annexe that you see in the pictures. Also here is a twin bedroom with en suite bathroom.
The other bedroom is upstairs and reached by a spiral staircase. It has a wooden floor, nice antique twin beds and also has en suite bathroom facilities. The landing continues to the lovely covered gallery terrace that is such a typical feature of cottages in Asturias. The views are indescribably beautiful.
There are lots of other good reasons for choosing this cottage. It’s unusual in having a property manager with an office in nearby Sevares village. Sevares is 5 mins by car but an even nicer walk (15 mins) along a path that goes through the woods. It has a supermarket, bakery, restaurants that offer a well-priced set meal of the day and the manager’s office, where you can make use of WiFi internet and arrange activities. Another very good grilled meats restaurant is just up the road and food in Asturias is one of the real highlights (vegetarians are not that well comprehended in Asturias: but read about its specialities of cider and cheese).
According to individual interests, these range from golf (reduced rates for our clients) at an excellent local golf course, canoeing on the River Sella (suitable for children from 7 years), surfing (also for children and you can hire the surfboards at the beach), horseriding, fishing in River Piloña (a licence is required, so please ask us well in advance if you plan to fish), and simply fantastic walks (guided or self-guided) in Sierra de Sueve, Ponga and Picos de Europa.
Our clients also benefit from a discount on meals taken at a nearby Palace Hotel, an elegant choice in an equally secluded country setting.
Asturias beaches (read our guide) are another huge attraction. You can even look forward to the drive: a country road (avoiding the main highway) links the local town of Infiesto with beaches in 20 minutes. Drive further, another 20 minutes, and the sandy beach options expand at Ribadesella to include Playa de Vega (for surfboard hire) and Bueyo de Mar, where a great beach restaurant (book in advance!) offers freshly caught fish and seafood.
Other Atlantic highlights include the pretty fishing village of Tazones, Lastres (ask us for recommendations for seafood restaurants here!) with its Jurassic Museum, dinosaur footprints, lighthouses and breathtaking cliffs along an unspoilt coastline.
Driving around this charming area, called Piloña (see Asturias map), is more like old-fashioned leisurely motoring: country lanes, few cars, lovely landscapes. Our favourites are Ponga, the Desfiladero de los Beyos, Cangas for the Picos de Europa, historic Covadonga, tomb of King Pelayo and gateway to high glacial lakes.
Espinaredo is one of Spain’s most famous village beauties and little places like Miyares (just up the road) are a delight. This is one of the best spots for mushroom-hunting in autumn. We can put you in touch with the association of local experts if you want to go on a guided hunt.
All in all, an exciting combination of green mountains, idyllic countryside, good facilities, interesting activities, beach and coastal attractions and some very good gastronomic options!
