One of the great things about Asturias is that within an hour you can be at so many fabulous places. From this holiday home, in the early folds of the Sierra de Sueve, you don’t even need that long. This is Piloña (see Asturias map), a very gentle, very lovely area where time ticks by so much more slowly than one is used to.

We love this part of Asturias, it’s off the beaten track and quite simply an outstandingly beautiful natural region to get to know. For walking, you not only have the Sierra del Sueve itself (read the article in our Undiscovered Spain series) on your doorstep, a short drive brings you to Cangas, gateway to the Picos de Europa and Covadonga with its glacial lakes. Ribadesella and its fine beaches are half an hour away.

There’s more: explore the minor roads that bring you to delightful villages such as Espinaredo, and don’t miss the amazing drive to Ponga following the River Sella to pass through the Desfiladero de los Beyos (Beyos Gorge). This route is described in our guide to Holidays in Picos de Europa.

There's always more to explore and see, whether it's wild flowers in spring, beaches in summer or mushroom-hunting in autumn. Winters are surprisingly mild: it might rain but the misty Sierra del Sueve becomes quite mysterious and the house has a log fire plus central heating.

The house is totally private, with a lawned garden and private meadow. These are good, safe places for children to run and play freely.

It has four wood-floored bedrooms and two bathrooms. We offer it for six people only as we consider that eight people wouldn’t be completely comfortable and the dining table sits six only. The house is simply but very solidly furnished, with an open fireplace (and central heating if required) and DVD for quiet nights in.

Despite its quiet location, you can walk to a nearby village (15 mins). Sevares village, on the main road connecting Picos de Europa and the coast, is the  place for all your basic practical needs; can shop here, there are places to eat and drink, you can take the local train to Oviedo, Ribadesella on the coast (or even Santander), and also use internet facilities at the local management office for the holiday property.

The (English-speaking) manager is also on hand by phone should you wish to arrange a variety of services, from golf at superb links by a nearby Palace Hotel, horseriding, fishing, guided walks and also canoeing in the River Sella (suitable for also children from 7 years).

The Hotel offers preferential rates to Rustical Travel clients who want to play golf and also a discount on meals taken in its restaurant, a refined venue for a special lunch or evenings out. It also offers our clients a special meal-delivery service. The house’s kitchen is quite small so it’s an interesting option for elaborate (and easy) dinners in.

A holiday here is utterly peaceful. Children will love the atmosphere of old Asturias. They will be intrigued by the ancient hórreo (raised grainstore) in the garden (they always seem to want to play underneath it), although little ones should be watched if they climb the steps as there’s no railing. Apart from the garden lawn, there’s a fenced, enclosed meadow to play in. Horses often roam another meadow to the side of the house.

Another attraction, especially for children, is the Jurassic Museum by the pretty coastal town of Lastres (an excellent place for fish restaurants). This is the Dinosaur Coast: at the sandy beach below, you can spot fossilized dinosaur footprints.

If you fancy spending more time on the coast, our guide to Asturias beaches will help plan the day.

Fishing is walking distance away from the property, in a nearby river, and we can give you assistance in obtaining the necessary permit.
