Sweep round on the white pebble driveway and draw up at the wrap-round lawn of your very lovely Andalucia holiday villa.

You’re nicely hidden away in a verdant valley, it’s most likely a warm, sunny day, and the hillsides are dark green with forest. It’s exceptionally green, in fact, for southern Spain, but that’s the beauty of this particular valley, where water is abundant and vegetation thrives.

The first thing you notice is the gardens surrounding the villa. They’re very large, luxuriant and pretty. There’s a fence around the two-and-a-half acres, but you don’t see it for all the shrubs and trees, and the very restful views beyond.

To the rear of the property, high trees make a protective border and a security gate makes you feel as snug and secluded as if you were in your own Spanish castle.

A modern villa like this offers considerably more comfort and convenience than a castle, though! It’s a large affair for just six people and beautifully designed.

Floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors make the views very much part of the villa experience, at the same time that they display interiors in natural light.

We liked the way rustic elements such as timber beams and Andalusian terracotta floors are contrasted with the picture windows and smart furnishings. Also how furnishing changes from sitting room to sitting room; leather sofas make a family group in the main, central space, while a softer, almost antique style pertains in another sunny, carpeted room.

There’s yet another sitting room, more a viewing room, really, as it purveys the gardens and pool below so clearly through high glass panes.

The design is very intelligent, joining living with dining with entertainment spaces, and all of them with outdoor terraces on different levels. On one large covered terrace, where glass walls act as a wind break, you can dine out and enjoy the views, or walk back indoors to the main dining area by the breakfast bar and kitchen.

If you fancy home cooking one day, a good paella or similar can be prepared for you by a lady from a local family. Babysitting can also be arranged.

There are three bedrooms, two doubles and a twin.

The Master room is on the same floor as the main living accommodation. The bed is a four-poster and the en suite bathroom a good, large one. Glass doors slide open to the gardens and you have TV (with Sky).

The other two bedrooms are down a few stairs, where they open to a lower level of the gardens. They share a good size bathroom with a double sink.

It’s outside on the vast lawn or enjoying the beautiful 10-metre pool and sun terrace where you’ll be spending a lot of the time. There’s so much space and it’s so quiet here. We hesitate to use the word “idyllic”, but it really is a special place.

It’s an interesting choice for winter lets, too, not least because of a gorgeous poolside conservatory that amplifies the sun’s warmth. The pool isn’t heated and too cold really for winter swims, but the house has a stylish open fireplace and another woodburner, fully supported by central heating.

Do note that air conditioning is a charged extra here. You pay for the extra electricity as used and at cost (measured by a meter reading). To begin with we found this surprising, as villas are normally rented with all costs included. Then we realized that it was a way of encouraging guests not to use air conditioning with all those windows and doors open, which does make sense. And it’s a means of keeping the price down, too.

Most of the summer time, opening the house up to its various terraces and views is the natural and best way to allow breeze to maintain an agreeably warm, but not hot, indoor temperature.

The villa is generally well-suited for children (the staircase can be gated) and the pool has a circular shallow area designed especially for them. Then pool isn’t gated, though, so normal parental supervision is the order of the day here.

There are some spots in the gardens which could, in theory, be seen from afar, but the entire pool area cannot be overlooked at all and your intimacy is complete here.

Your villa is reached via a 2 km track in good condition from a country road that soon brings you to good restaurants and Casares village, a genuine and very pleasant place to stroll around and get to know. You have banks, shops and more restaurants here.

Ten minutes away is the superb Finca Cortesin golf course and a few minutes more brings to a choice of two dozen more coastal courses.

Twenty minutes puts you on sandy beaches at Estepona, and in just over half an hour you can be exploring Selwo Wildlife Adventure Park.

An hour’s drive rewards you with Ronda town or the Atlantic beaches past Tarifa: different and exciting. You can even get over the Mediterranean to Tangiers on the fast ferry and spend a day in Morocco.
