Jimena de la Frontera is one of our favourite Andalusian villages, calm, attractive, warm and nicely laid out on a hill. It’s easy to reach from Malaga Airport yet feels remote in the Cadiz countryside, with whitewashed streets splashed with colourful flowering plants and at least two very satisfactory restaurants.
It’s just the kind of location we would wish for a quality villa of this kind, even if guests may understandably opt to spend most of their time at the property, enjoying its excellent facilities, spaciousness and indisputable charms.
The villa benefits from having been created from a respectable old farmhouse rather than being a new build, which can often be clinical and cold. This place has warmth and character – and plenty more besides: let’s start with the setting.
Ten minutes from Jimena (see video below) with its elegant streets arranged under a Moorish castle and no shortage of cafés, shops, bars and restaurants. Jimena is also well-known for its annual International Jazz Festival.
Just 20 minutes from both Gaucin and Sotogrande (5 golf courses), an hour from both Tarifa (beaches, surf and boat trips) and Ronda (shopping, sightseeing), and 1½ hours from Malaga Airport (Gibraltar and Jerez are alternative airports). In rolling countryside just outside the Alcornocales Natural Park and in its own grounds that encompass a large lawn, organic market garden and a meadow with donkeys and Shetland ponies that children are welcome to feed.
The accommodation is almost entirely ground floor and built round a central courtyard in characteristic Andalusian style. There are lemon and palm trees and a blue mosaic fountain in the form of an extravagant pomegranate stone.
A high-beamed entrance hall leads through to a magnificently laid-out kitchen. Appliances are by Gaggenau. It has all the appurtenances one would expect of a first-rate cooking environment.
Moving on into the main building, it becomes clear that the standards are universally superlative. It is superbly furnished, equipped and fitted out. Air conditioning in summer reverses to heating in winter, when underfloor heating also kicks in and fires burn in hearths in the living room and Master bedroom. Mostly, though, this is a property designed for the sunny Andalusia climate.
The exceptionally large and comfortable living room has French windows that open to invite the warm, sweet air to waft in, whether you are reclining on a sofa watching the massive plasma TV, listening to music (there’s an iPod connection at the poolside, too, and speakers in the main bedrooms), or cueing balls on the uniquely crafted American pool table. There’s also WiFi internet connection.
There are five bedrooms in all, four of them in the main house:
One delightful double bedroom, spacious, light and beautifully furnished and decorated following the same eclectic style as the entire property, has a green mosaic-floored bathroom with walk-in shower and French windows out to the gardens.
The Master bedroom is larger still. In addition to en suite power-shower room, a free-standing, handcrafted marble bathtub sits in the corner by the fireplace. Again, there is garden access, underfloor heating, subtle lighting and oceans of wardrobe and storage space.
Next to a gorgeously green shower room in the entrance hallway is a small, modest single bedroom for a child or additional guest and, up a few stairs, is the tower room with two single beds and a balcony overlooking the pool.
The sleeping arrangements are rounded off by a self-contained guest cottage on the other side of the wide lawn. It has an en suite double bedroom, small but well-equipped kitchen, its own living room with plasma TV, iPod music system and small but private terrace.
Outside, the enjoyment is multiplied by the perfect square of a 10 m x 10 m swimming pool, large sun terrace, poolside bar, barbecue and shaded diding area with its own iPod music system. No need to walk back and forth to the house for kitchen needs: there’s another dishwasher, fridge and icemaker right here.
The swimming pool is salt-filtered and has Roman steps down into the water. Both the pool and its terrace have night lighting for those lazy, late swims and atmospheric charm. It is fenced all along one side.
The gardens are planted with olive, fig, almond, pomegranate, eucalyptus and citrus trees and is fenced off from the meadow with its friendly four-legged friends. A vegetable and herb garden provides salad and other fresh, organic produce. Around the property winds a lawn as green as the rich countryside stretching out beyond. Views reach out to hills and mountains in the distance. It's perfectly peaceful apart from a particularly rural moment in the evening when a local farmer feeds his pigs and they kick up a enthusiastic racket. It's always around 8 pm, a reminder for some that it's time for a sundowner...
The property and its grounds are entered via electrically-operated security gates and a short drive leads up the villa.
A caretaker and his partner live in a separate, independent wing of the property, very discretely, but on hand if needed. Their apartment has a separate entrance. The caretaker tends the pool in the morning to ensure it remains in tip-top condition.
