For those planning a classic Andalucia holiday visiting Sevilla, Cordoba and Granada, the Antequera area is an ideal strategic location. Our rural choice here is La Joya (430 inhabitants) on the verge of El Torcal Natural Park (see video below) .

The holiday home is located centrally in this quiet, authentic Andalusian village. It’s very untouristy, very Spanish, easy-going. Just 2 km away, a hotel offers a number of interesting facilities ranging from spa treatments to tennis and bicycle hire.

If you’re coming with another family or friends, the house divides neatly into upstairs and downstairs apartments, interconnected by internal and external staircases. There are double lounge, sleeping and kitchen facilities.

If you only require 2 or 3 bedrooms, the larger upstairs apartment is all that you will need and you don't pay for the downstairs accommodation, which remains unoccupied, so rentals here are always totally private.

When more than 6 people are coming, the entire house is open for your use. Although there are five bedrooms in all, we offer the property for a maximum of eight people for comfort’s sake.

A large rear patio has an equally large (10 m x 4 m) swimming pool with sunloungers and a shady, furnished pergola for refreshing relaxation after a day out. It also has a brick-built barbecue.

Ground floor accommodation
The main door opens to a reception lobby and thence to a large open-plan living and dining room with kitchen. This is the smaller apartment. There’s room for four people to dine, six people to sit and a hallway leads to two bedrooms. One is double-bedded and has an en suite bathroom (full bathtub); one is twin-bedded with shower room in the same hallway; both bedrooms have a window onto the patio. A rear door leads out to the patio and pool area.

First floor accommodation
Stairs to up to a second set of complete apartment facilities. The living room has comfy seating for five people, a 32” TV and DVD and glass-fronted fireplace. Decorative elements have been nicely chosen. An archway leads to a kitchen with seating for six people; it’s a very pleasant space and overlooks the patio. There are three bedrooms here: two are twin-bedded (one with a shower room opposite the room, one with en suite shower) and one is double-bedded with en suite bathroom (full bathtub).

From the upstairs hallway, a door leads out to external steps, which go down to the patio and pool area. You can take it easy sitting under the shady pergola at one side, or enjoy long swims in the large pool. It’s quite private as neighbouring windows do not look directly onto it.

Shops are walking distance and a restaurant just round the corner serves drinks and meals from breakfast to dinner time.

Rustical Travel has a close relationship with the local spa hotel which not only makes available to our clients a variety of bath and massage treatments, but also tennis, with racquets and balls provided, and sometimes bicycles are available for hire. The Reception can also arrange horseriding for you, in addition to being an invaluable source of local information.

It will probably be one or more of the three great jewels in the Andalusian crown that attracts you here. All are within day-trip reach. Classical Granada with the Alhambra is 1½ hrs from La Joya, orange-blossomed Cordoba and its magnificent mosque takes the same time, while quintessentially flamboyant Sevilla is a little further at 2 hrs.

But the immediate area is also of great interest: El Torcal Natural Park (see detailed map) is but a few minutes away, offering signposted walks through phantasmagorical rock formations! Strongly recommended.

Further afield, you can also visit the impressive El Chorro limestone gorge, famous for a death-defying (and now strictly off-limits) high altitude walkway, but more interesting for the reservoir area with its outstanding views and picnic spots.

Also of distinct interest is Laguna de Fuente de Piedra: Andalucia’s largest lagoon and a Natural Reserve is the breeding ground for flocks of pink flamingos.

Antequera town is only 20 mins away, where the dolmen caves (see Antequera area guide) are an ancient curiosity well worth visiting.

The property is also convenient for arrival from Malaga Airport: 1¼ hrs by hire car.
