Let’s face it, many villas with pool in the Nerja area of the Malaga coast tend to be modern, soulless and box-like. Many, but not all: and here we found one that we liked. Just above popular and pretty Frigiliana, ten minutes inland from beaches, with perfect privacy and terrific sea views.

Frigiliana is set among foothills that rise to become relatively mountainous. In the higher reaches of the Axarquia village is this winsome, cheerful rural villa with plenty of outdoor space and colourful flower gardens. It’s just right for a couple or four people wanting somewhere peaceful and pleasant near the sea in sunny, rural Andalucia.

You’re fairly high up here – hence the marvellous vistas of the Mediterranean – and right by the property are walking paths that lead directly into the mountains of Sierra de Almijara y Tejeda and open views up even further, all the way to the Bay of Malaga.

Walkers will enjoy the freedom of the rarely frequented trails and beach-lovers have sea and sand just 10 minutes away. There are several to choose from but we suggest Playa Burriana, or a little further along the coast, Cerro Gordo, Calaceite or El Playazo at Nerja.

The holiday villa itself is unpretentious and sunny and it has its own character. It is perfect for couples either on their own or with children, but can also accommodate two couples together on holidays. It’s quiet, simple and very enjoyable. There’s a fresh, clean look and feel to it and a nicely tiled patio with pool. There are comfortable sunloungers, sunshade and the barbecue area is shaded by a vine-covering in summer months.

The villa, pool and sunbathing areas are not overlooked: all very private. At this restful spot above the village, you appreciate the semi-tropical atmosphere that is evident everywhere: lemons, avocados and mangos boost the local economy together with tourism, as well as wine and cane-honey production. As far as we know, Frigiliana has the only cane-honey factory in Europe, a deliciously dark molasses sweetener to accompany your dessert. Locals even put it on their avocadoes. Try also the sweet local wine, similar to sherry, made from sun-baked grapes.

Although the villa’s location is rural, the well-preserved Moorish upper quarter of Frigiliana village is just 5 minutes walk away. Walking around the whitewashed village is a real pleasure, and there are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants to choose from. Frigiliana is one of inland Malaga’s very desirable holiday destinations. It takes pride in its history as a village of 3 cultures: Moors. Jews and Christians have all played the part here and are remembered in local traditions.

The only fault we could find was the last part of the drive up which is decidedly steep. But everyone seems to manage and there are many repeat clients for this mountain village cottage near the seaside.

The sea is very close, always present in the air, always visible: it is very seductive. Nerja beaches are good and very close at hand but a little further will even take us to natural protected beaches with restricted traffic where Mediterranean nature blends with the sea to create wonderful places to explore.

While the warm Mediterranean climate may lull you to utter relaxation, there are interesting places for day trips, too. The proximity to Nerja makes the caves there an enticing draw and Granada is only an hour away.

Private swimming pool (6 m x 3 m, approx 1.30 – 1.70 m deep); garden furniture including sunloungers and sunshade; barbecue; TV (Spanish channels only); CD / radio; coffee maker; washing machine (utility room); all linen included.

Distribution
All on one floor: open plan living / dining / kitchen; two bedrooms (one double-bedded & one twin-bedded); bathroom (shower over small tub).
Exterior: Private parking space; gardens with trees and terraces all around the property; pool area. The property is fenced or walled all around. There is also an outdoor utility room with washing machine.

Notes:
-The swimming pool will be open from early April to mid-October, weather permitting
-The property is surrounded by either a fence or a wall and we found the villa generally suitable for family with children, but bear in mind that the pool is not gated and that energetic children might climb the low walls.

Location and distances
Just above the village of Frigiliana, accessed by a 1.5 km track in good condition, definitely steep at places but manageable with care.
